In order to solve the problem of significantly shortened storage time of bananas in hot and humid environment (e.g., 30 °C and 90 % relative humidity), this paper reports the preparation of ZnO-TiO-BiWO (ZTB) ternary heterojunction antimicrobial photocatalysts composite carboxymethyl chitosan film (ZTB/CMCS).

Article Synopsis
  • * A total of 165 patients were included, with 62 receiving PORT, and the results showed that PORT improved disease-free survival (DFS) and locoregional recurrence-free survival (LRFS) in the overall group and specifically in patients with EGFR wild-type.
  • * However, in patients with EGFR mutations, PORT did not lead to significantly better survival outcomes, suggesting that EGFR wild-type status may help identify patients who could benefit from PORT.

Article Synopsis
  • Emotional distress (ED), like depression and anxiety, is common in cancer patients and can affect their treatment outcomes.
  • In a study with 227 lung cancer patients, those with ED had shorter survival rates and worse responses to their immune therapy treatments compared to those without ED.
  • The study highlights the importance of recognizing and treating emotional distress in cancer patients to help improve their overall health and treatment results.

Pulmonary sarcomatoid carcinoma (PSC) represents a rare and highly aggressive variant of lung cancer, characterized by its recalcitrance to conventional therapeutic modalities and the attendant dismal prognosis it confers. Recent breakthroughs in immunotherapy have presented novel prospects for PSC patients; nevertheless, the utility of neoadjuvant/conversional immunotherapy in the context of PSC remains ambiguous. In this report, we present a middle-aged male presenting with Stage III PSC, notable for its high expression of the programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1), initially deemed as non-resectable for sizeable tumor mass and multiple lymph nodes metastases.

Background: Severe respiratory system illness caused by influenza A virus infection is associated with excessive inflammation and abnormal apoptosis in alveolar epithelial cells (AEC). However, there are limited therapeutic options for influenza-associated lung inflammation and apoptosis. Pterostilbene (PTE, trans-3,5-dimethoxy-4-hydroxystilbene) is a dimethylated analog of resveratrol that has been reported to limit influenza A virus infection by promoting antiviral innate immunity, but has not been studied for its protective effects on virus-associated inflammation and injury in AEC.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how macrophage polarization affects pain and recovery in patients after surgery for lumbar disc herniation (LDH).
  • Researchers analyzed tissue samples from 117 patients, evaluating pain levels using visual analog scales and disability indices before and after surgery.
  • Results indicated that specific macrophage markers (CD68 and CCR7) were linked to lower pain scores one week post-surgery, suggesting pro-inflammatory M1 macrophages may help reduce chronic pain after such operations.

Introduction: The combination of a PD-L1 inhibitor plus carboplatin/cisplatin and etoposide (EC/EP) has become a new standard first-line treatment for extensive-stage small-cell lung cancer (ES-SCLC). Combining concurrent palliative hypofractionated radiotherapy of the thorax (HFRT) and immunochemotherapy may have a synergistic effect. In this study, we explored an optimal model of combination radiotherapy with immunochemotherapy as first-line treatment of ES-SCLC.

The main challenges in clinical applications of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are attributed to their heterogeneity. It is believed that preconditioning of MSCs with active compounds may enhance the expression of potentially therapeutic molecules and thus achieve stable and effective therapeutic outcomes. In the present study, we investigated the mechanism by which pyrogallol increased the therapeutic efficacy of human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hUCMSCs) against LPS-induced acute lung injury (ALI).

Background: Renal tubular epithelial-myofibroblast transdifferentiation (EMT) plays a key role in the regulation of renal fibrosis. Exosomes derived from human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hucMSCs) play a crucial role in alleviating renal fibrosis and injury. Additionally, hucMSC-derived exosomes contain numerous microRNAs (miRNAs).

Immunotherapy has become the standard of care for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), either in combination or monotherapy. However, there are still some patients who cannot benefit from it. Immunization strategies for NSCLC are based on the expression of PD-L1 on tumor cells and TMB, and although these indicators have a certain predictive effect, their predictive performance is not good.

Background: Diagnosing and treating patients with multiple primary lung cancers (MPLCs) bring challenges to the clinic, and the preliminary evidence has revealed unsatisfying outcomes after targeted therapy and immunotherapy. Therefore, we surveyed genomic profiles of MPLCs and their possible associations with tumor mutation burden (TMB), programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1), and the immune cell infiltration landscape.

Materials And Methods: A total of 112 patients with MPLCs with surgically resected 294 tumors were eligible, and 255 tumors were sequenced using a 1021-gene panel.

Anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) is a validated molecular target for non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The use of tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) has led to significantly improved survival benefits. However, the clinical benefits of targeting ALK using TKIs are limited due to the emergence of drug resistance.

Rationale: Choriocarcinoma is a rare and highly invasive gestational trophoblastic tumor that secretes high levels of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). As one of the uncommon non-gestational choriocarcinoma, primary mediastinal choriocarcinoma is an exceeding rare, and aggressive malignancy with poor prognosis.

Patient Concerns: A 26-year-old man was admitted to the hospital with cough, shortness of breath, and occasional hemoptysis.

Angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (AITL) is a unique subtype of peripheral T-cell lymphoma. POEMS syndrome is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome caused by an underlying plasma cell disorder (PCD). The occurrence of AITL with POEMS syndrome has rarely been reported in the literature.

Background: EphA5 is a member of the Eph/ephrin family and plays a critical role in the regulation of carcinogenesis. A significant reduction of EphA5 transcripts in high-grade prostate cancer tissue was shown using a transcriptomic analysis, compared to the low-grade prostate cancer tissue. As less is known about the mechanism of EphA5 downregulation and the function of EphA5, here we investigated the expression and an epigenetic change of EphA5 in prostate cancer and determined if these findings were correlated with clinicopathologic characteristics of prostate cancer.

A new xylanase gene, xynBM4, was cloned from Streptomyces megasporus DSM 41476 and expressed in Pichia pastoris. The full-length gene consists of 1,443 bp and encodes 480 amino acids including a putative 49-residue signal peptide. The deduced amino acid sequence of xynBM4 shows the highest identity of 66.

A xylanase gene, xynAM6, was isolated from the genomic DNA library of Streptomyces megasporus DSM 41476 using colony PCR screening method. The 1440-bp full-length gene encodes a 479-amino acid peptide consisting of a putative signal peptide of 36 residues, a family 10 glycoside hydrolase domain and a family 2 carbohydrate-binding module. The mature peptide of xynAM6 was successfully expressed in Pichia pastoris GS115.

Aim: To investigate the expression of chemokine receptor CCR1 in the human colorectal carcinoma and its correlation with metastasis of lymph nodes.

Methods: By immunohistochemistry, the expression of CCR1 was studied in the colorectal carcinoma of 83 cases and 15 normal cases as control subjects.

Results: The positive expression rates of CCR1 in the colorectal carcinoma tissues with deep invasion, poor differentiation, metastasis and higher Dukes' stage were significantly higher than those with superficial invasion (P<0.
