Spinal cord injury (SCI) has been considered a clinically challenging disease that is characterized by local disturbance of the microenvironment, which inhibits post-injury neural regeneration. The simulation of a microenvironment conducive to the regeneration of spinal cord is beneficial for SCI repair. In this study, bioactive composite hydrogels are developed that mimic the regenerative microenvironment of spinal cord for enhanced SCI repair.

The injury of both central and peripheral nervous systems can result in neurological disorders and severe nervous diseases, which has been one of the challenges in the medical field. The use of peptide-based hydrogels for nerve repair and regeneration (NRR) provides a promising way for treating these problems, but the effects of the functions of peptide hydrogels on the NRR efficiency have been not understood clearly. In this review, we present recent advances in the material design, matrix fabrication, functional tailoring, and NRR applications of three types of peptide-based hydrogels, including pure peptide hydrogels, other component-functionalized peptide hydrogels, and peptide-modified polymer hydrogels.

It remains a challenge to exploit dual-functional metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for applications, including luminescence detection and proton conduction. With the deliberate selection of the bifunctional organic ligand 5-sulfoisophthalic acid monosodium salt (NaHbts), and the phosphonic acid ligand ,'-piperazine (bismethylenephosphonic acid; HL), a robust three-dimensional (3D) noninterpenetrating dual-functional MOF, [Tb(HL)(Hbts)(HO)]·HO (), has been synthesized hydrothermally. On the basis of the excellent thermal and chemical as well as superior luminescence stabilities in water and solutions with different pHs, can serve as the simple, rapid, and highly selective and sensitive luminescence detection of the carcinoid biomarkers 5-hydroxytryptamine (HT) and its metabolite 5-hydroxyindole-3-acetic acid (HIAA) with detection limits of nanomolar magnitude in water and in simulated blood plasma and urine systems.

Study Design: In vitro experimental study.

Objective: To establish an axial impact injury model of intervertebral disc (IVD) and to investigate if a single impact injury without endplate structural disruption could initiate intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD), and what is the roles of Piezo1 in this process.

Summary Of Background Data: Although IDD process has been confirmed to be associated with structural failures such as endplate fractures, whether a single impact injury of the endplates without structural disruption could initiate IDD remains controversial.

Metal-organic framework (MOF) materials have been extensively incorporated with inorganic semiconductor photocatalysts to improve their photocatalytic activity through an efficient charge transfer process across their heterointerface. In this work, octahedral UiO-66-NH2 MOFs with edge-lengths of 110-330 nm are uniformly decorated on the surface of TiO2 electrospun nanofibers by a traditional solvothermal method combined with activation pretreatment. Before the solvothermal growth of UiO-66-NH2, the TiO2 electrospun nanofibers were activated in NaOH solution to etch the TiO2 surface for allowing the exposure of lattice oxygen.

Two luminescent lead phosphonates with two-dimensional (2D) layer and three-dimensional (3D) framework structure, namely, Pb[(L)(Hssc)(HO)] () and [Pb(L)(bts)(HO)]·HO () (HL = O(CHCH)NCHPOH, HL = HPOCHNH(CH)NHCHPOH, Hssc = 5-sulfosalicylic acid, NaHbts = 5-sulfoisophthalic acid sodium) have been prepared via hydrothermal techniques. The two compounds not only show excellent thermal stability but also remain intact in aqueous solution within an extensive pH range. Moreover, the atomic absorption spectroscopy analysis experiment indicates that there does not exist the leaching of Pb ions from the lead phosphonates, which show they are nontoxic in aqueous solution.
