Targeting angiogenesis has been considered a promising treatment for a large number of malignancies, including osteosarcoma. Bevacizumab (Bev) is an anti-vascular endothelial growth factor being used for this purpose. We herein investigate the therapeutic potential of Bev in angiogenesis during osteosarcoma and the related mechanisms.

Osteosarcoma is the major malignant primary bone cancer in children and adolescents, which is highly aggressive with frequent acquisition of chemoresistance phenotypes. Although much progress has been made, mechanisms of osteosarcoma rapid growth and chemoresistance are still not well elucidated. Generally, alternated metabolic characterization has been proposed to be a hallmark of cancer, yet it is lack of a systematic characterization of cancer metabolic networks.

BACKGROUND Osteosarcoma is the most frequent primary bone cancer derived from primitive mesenchymal cells. The aim of this study was to explore the molecular mechanism of the development and progression of osteosarcoma. MATERIAL AND METHODS The gene expression profiles of osteosarcoma from 17 specimens (3 normal and 14 osteosarcoma) were downloaded from the GEO database.

Osteosarcoma is the most common primary bone tumour in children and adolescents. Accumulating evidence has shown that microRNAs (miRNAs) participate in the development of almost all types of cancer. Here, we investigated the role of miR-224 in the development and progression of osteosarcoma.

Objective: To perform a meta-analysis examining the effectiveness of platelet-rich plasma and platelet-rich fibrin matrix for improving healing of rotator cuff injuries. Data sources/design: A meta-analysis of eligible studies was performed after searching Medline, Cochrane, and EMBASE on 14 December 2015.

Setting: University hospital.

The purpose of this study is to present the long-term outcomes of allogenic hand transplantations performed at our centre. Between January 2001 and October 2002, five allogeneic limb transplantations were performed in three patients (two bilateral forearm and one left hand transplantation). Donors and recipients were matched for blood types (ABO/Rh) and had at least two human leukocyte antigen (HLA) matches.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the potential effect of hematoporphyrin monomethyl ether-sonodynamic therapy (HMME-SDT) on MG-63 osteosarcoma cells. The HMME concentration was kept constant at 20 µg/ml and the MG-63 osteosarcoma cell line was exposed to ultrasound with an intensity of 1.0 W/cm2 for 30 sec.

Background: After injury, axonal regeneration of the adult central nervous system (CNS) is inhibited by myelin-derived growth-suppressing proteins. These axonal growth inhibitory proteins are mediated via activation of Rho, a small GTP-binding protein. The activated form of Rho, which is bound to GTP, is the direct activator of Rho kinase (ROCK) through serial downstream effector proteins to inhibit axonal regeneration.

Purpose: The accuracy of intertrochanteric fracture classification is important; indeed, the patient outcomes are dependent on their classification. The aim of this study was to use the AO classification system to evaluate the variation in classification between X-ray and computed tomography (CT)/3D CT images. Then, differences in the length of surgery were evaluated based on two examinations.

The mechanisms involved in the neuroprotection induced by hypoxic preconditioning (HP) have not been fully elucidated. The involvement of hypoxia-inducible factor-1 alpha (HIF-1alpha) in such neuroprotection has been confirmed. There is also evidence showing that a series of genes with important functions in iron metabolism, including transferrin receptor (TfR1) and divalent metal transporter 1 (DMT1), are regulated by HIF-1alpha in response to hypoxia in extra-neural organs or cells.

Magnesium and its alloys have been used in the recent development of lightweight, biodegradeable implant materials. However, the corrosion properties of magnesium limit its usefulness. In a previous study, a micro-arc oxidation (MAO) method was used to modify a Mg-1.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the link between GSTM1 and GSTT1 gene variations and osteosarcoma risk in a Chinese population.
  • Data was collected from 110 osteosarcoma patients and 226 controls, with genotyping conducted using a specific PCR method.
  • Findings suggest that individuals with null GSTM1 and GSTT1 genotypes have a significantly higher risk of developing osteosarcoma, particularly in males and younger individuals aged 15 or under.

Background: Targeted tumor therapies have been making rapid progress in recent years, and the erbB-2 oncogene is a suitable target. There was much discussion about the level of erbB-2 in osteosarcoma. The aim of this study was to investigate the erbB-2 amplification or expression status in osteosarcoma.

Background: The use of a free, vascularized fibular graft is an important technique for the reconstruction of large defects in long bones. The technique has many advantages in strong, tubular bones; a more reliable vascular anatomy with a large vascular diameter and long pedicle is used, minimizing donor-site morbidity. Due to limitations in both fibular anatomy and mechanics, they cannot effectively be used to treat large limb bone defects due to their volume and strength.

Objective: To explore the differentiation and the variant expression of protein of the bone marrow stromal stem cells (BMSCs) when the BMSCs differentiated into the neuronal cells in the analogous micro-environment of spinal cord injury.

Methods: BMSCs were isolated from bone marrow of Wistar rats and labeled with PKH26 (control group), and then were cocultured with neural cells, which were isolated from the spinal cord of the fetal rats, in the same plate well (co-culture group) or in the two-layer Petri well (two-layer group). Eight days later, the BMSCs were identified by immunofluorescence staining of NSE and GFAP respectively.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers aimed to study how blocking the ICOS gene affects the activation and growth of rat T-lymphocytes using RNA interference.
  • They designed oligonucleotides to target the ICOS gene, introduced them into rat lymphocytes, and measured changes in gene expression and proliferation through various methods.
  • Results showed that silencing the ICOS gene led to decreased T-lymphocyte activation, reduced proliferation, and lower levels of immune markers IFN-gamma and IL-4, indicating potential implications for transplant immunity research.
