The importance of self-care to improve health and social well-being is well recognised. Nevertheless, there remains a need to encourage people to better understand how their body works, and how to keep it healthy. Because of its important role, part of this understanding should be based on why the immune system must be supported.

Background: Although esophageal carcinoma (EC) is one of the most common cancers in the world, details of its pathogenesis remain unclear. Metabolic reprogramming is a main feature of EC. Mitochondrial dysfunction, especially the decrease in mitochondrial complex I (MTCI), plays an important role in the occurrence and development of EC.

We present detailed studies on exciton-photon coupling and polariton emission based on a poly(1,4-phenylenevinylene) copolymer, Super Yellow (SY), in a series of optical microcavities and optoelectronic devices, including light-emitting diode (LED) and light-emitting transistor (LET). We show that sufficiently thick SY microcavities can generate ultrastrong coupling with Rabi splitting energies exceeding 1 eV and exhibit spectrally narrow, nearly angle-independent photoluminescence following lower polariton (LP) mode dispersion. When the microcavity is designed with matched LP low-energy state and exciton emission peak for radiative pumping, the conversion efficiency from exciton to polariton emission can reach up to 80%.

Article Synopsis
  • Approximately 92.4% of patients diagnosed with schizophrenia in Shanghai were admitted involuntarily, highlighting the significant role of involuntary admission (IA) in mental health care.
  • Significant clinical factors such as patient age, lack of insight, and noncompliance with treatment strongly influenced the likelihood of IA, with noncompliance being the strongest predictor.
  • The study emphasizes the need for further qualitative and interventional research to better understand the evaluation processes of IA and reduce its necessity among these patients.

Article Synopsis
  • Arsenic pollution in freshwater negatively impacts aquatic life, but dissolved organic matter (DOM) can influence how toxic arsenic is to these organisms.
  • The study focused on how two types of DOM, humic acid (HA) and fulvic acid (FA), affect the toxicity and accumulation of inorganic arsenic in two algal species: Chlamydomonas reinhardtii (which has a cell wall) and Ochromonas danica (which has no cell wall).
  • Findings showed that DOM could either reduce or increase arsenic toxicity and accumulation depending on the algal species and the type of DOM, providing insights into the environmental risks posed by arsenic in aquatic systems.

Article Synopsis
  • Mycoplasma genitalium (MG) is linked to urogenital infections and reproductive issues but is not routinely tested in China; this study examines MG prevalence in patients from a Guangzhou STI clinic from Jan 2017 to May 2018.* -
  • Among 678 patients tested, MG was found in 7.2%, with a higher rate (14.2%) among symptomatic individuals; only one-third of those infected reported any symptoms.* -
  • The study suggests that routine testing for MG in symptomatic patients could be beneficial, and more research is needed to inform testing guidelines for this infection in China.*

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the value of a horizontal rafting plate in treating tibial plateau fractures.

Methods: The data of 24 patients in whom a horizontal rafting plate was used to treat a tibial plateau fracture between October 2014 and January 2018 were retrospectively analyzed, including 16 males and 8 females, aged 21-63 years old, with an average of 40 ± 14.68 years.

Objective: The aim of this study is to explore the role of Parkin in intervertebral disk degeneration (IDD) and its mitophagy regulation mechanism.

Study Design And Methods: Rat nucleus pulposus (NP) cells were stimulated with hydrogen peroxide (HO) to a mimic pathological condition. Apoptosis and mitophagy were assessed by Western blot, terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) assay, and immunofluorescence staining.

Background: The 'risk criterion' for involuntary admission (IA) has been adopted by Mental Health Law of the People's Republic of China since 2013. How the new legal regulation influences daily practices in psychiatric institutes are still unclear.

Aims: The present study sought to explore the application of risk criterion in IA cases; especially risk assessed by psychiatrists at admission and its influencing factors.

Objective: To summarize the indications and the clinical effects of a transfibular neck osteotomy approach and a combined anterolateral and posterolateral approach in the treatment of fractures of the lateral tibial plateau involving the posterolateral column.

Methods: Eleven patients with lateral tibial plateau fractures were included in the present study. The fractures were Schatzker type II or lateral platform fractures involving posterolateral column.

Purpose: To investigate morphological changes of focal choroidal excavation (FCE).

Methods: The medical records of 18 FCE patients (25 eyes) were retrospectively reviewed. Clinical features as well as images of ocular fundus, fundus fluorescein angiography (FFA), indocyanine green angiography (ICGA), and spectral domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) were analyzed.

: Multiple and overlapping diagnoses of personality disorders (PDs) have been a major obstacle in clinical practice and research. This study aims to investigate the comorbidity of PDs in a sample of a high-risk clinical population. We propose a diagnostic model to address this critical issue.

Background: A high rectal and oropharyngeal sexually transmitted infection (STI) burden has been reported among men who have sex with men (MSM) in many regions, but little data exists on rectal and oropharyngeal STIs among MSM in China. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of gonorrhea and chlamydia at different anatomic sites among MSM in Guangzhou, China.

Methods: We recruited a cross-sectional sample of MSM in one Chinese city and collected detailed information about socio-demographic characteristics and sexual behaviors.

Objective: To compare the efficacy and safety in the management of lumbar diseases performed by either posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF) or transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF). Interbody fusion is considered the "gold standard" in the treatment of lumbar degenerative diseases. Both PLIF and TLIF have been advocated, and it remains controversial as to the best operative technique.

This study focused on 2-D miniature quartz plates. By assigning appropriate boundary condition using finite element modeling (FEM), the vibration of a quartz plate was analyzed for converse piezoelectric effect. The quality and stability of the resonance of a quartz plate was determined by examining changes on the response curve of resonant frequency when the length of plate was decreased or increased.
