In the process of storage and processing, food will be affected by the external environment and reduce its quality, such as light, water, oxygen, microorganisms, etc. Barrier packaging is needed to shield the adverse effects of the external environment. Polysaccharide macromolecules are rich in active sites, which gives them designable properties, and therefore have been widely studied by researchers in the field of barrier packaging films.

Green and chemical-free hot water (HW) treatment can effectively reduce the chilling injury of peach fruit; however, the mechanism of inducing chilling resistance by heat treatment is still unclear. This study found that HW treatment could activate reactive oxygen species (ROS) signalling, forming ROS-Ca signalling. Furthermore, we identified a peach Ca sensor, calcium-dependent protein kinase 29 (PpCDPK29), as a positive regulator of postharvest chilling resistance.

Circadian clock regulates plant development and physiology by anticipating daily environmental changes. Here we studied the core clock protein involved in β-aminobutyric acid (BABA)-inducible systemic acquired resistance (SAR) resistance to Rhizopus stolonifer in peach fruit. BABA elicitation barely primed the accumulation of jasmonate or ethylene, whose regulation was associated with morning-loop gene expression.

Vascular plant one-zinc finger (VOZ) transcription factors (TFs) play crucial roles in plant immunity. Nevertheless, how VOZs modulate defense signaling in response to elicitor-induced resistance is not fully understood. Here, the defense elicitor β-aminobutyric acid (BABA) resulted in the visible suppression of Rhizopus rot disease of peach fruit caused by Rhizopus stolonifer.

Article Synopsis
  • GABA treatment enhances the ability of fresh-cut stem lettuce to resist various stresses by increasing its internal GABA levels through specific biochemical pathways.
  • This study revealed that GABA boosts activities of enzymes involved in GABA and polyamine metabolism, leading to elevated levels of important metabolites.
  • Additionally, the research found that GABA application downregulates certain transcription factors (LsMYB44 and LsWRKY12) that inhibit the expression of genes critical for GABA shunt and polyamine metabolism, ultimately promoting GABA accumulation.

The inducer β-aminobutyric acid (BABA) participates in the immune response in various plants. However, the specific mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) cascade involved in BABA-induced resistance (BABA-IR) has not yet been elucidated. Here, peach (Prunus persica) fruits treated with the BABA exhibited pattern-triggered immunity defense against Rhizopus stolonifer, accompanied by the generation of reactive oxygen species and activation of a MAPK cascade.

After harvest, fruits and vegetables go through the stages of storage, transportation and sales, and how to regulate the role of preservative in different stages is an urgent problem to be solved. Herein, chitosan-stearic acid is synthesized, then interacting with trans-2-hexenal (E2H) to prepare nanoclusters. Subsequently, the temperature-sensitive liposomes were designed to encase E2H by using the special temperature-responsive open-chain phospholipids, and then combined with chitosan to obtain chitosan-based coating film for peach preservation.

Chitosan is an ideal coating film for food preservation, but the performance of a single chitosan coating film is not good. Herein, the liposome was prepared by embedding copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) and thyme essential oil (TEO) in the hydrophilic and hydrophobic double-domain structure formed by phospholipids, and combining with chitosan to obtain a chitosan-based coating film for litchi preservation. The liposome was well-dispersed and stable with an average particle size of about 190 nm.

The effects of hydrogen sulfide (HS) on chilling injury (CI), reactive oxygen species (ROS) metabolism, sugar metabolism, pentose phosphate pathway (PPP), and membrane lipid metabolism in loquat fruit throughout the refrigerated period were investigated in this study. The findings indicated that HS application restrained the increase in internal browning (IB), malondialdehyde (MDA) content, and electrolyte leakage, while sustaining higher total phenolic and total flavonoid levels, and lower soluble quinone content in loquat fruit. Besides, HS promoted antioxidant accumulation and increased antioxidant enzyme activities by the regulation of ROS metabolism, along with increasing fructose and glucose levels and reducing power by activating sugar metabolism and PPP.

Although cinnamaldehyde (CA) is an excellent antimicrobial agent, its application in the food industry was limited by its volatility and lack of antimicrobial persistence. Herein, aminated hollow mesoporous silica (NH-HMSN) was prepared by selective etching and amino-modified. Subsequently, long-acting antibacterials with regulated release (NH-HMSN@CA) were obtained by using NH-HMSN as cinnamaldehyde carrier.

The effects of γ-aminobutyric (GABA) on enzymatic browning, storage quality, membrane and reactive oxygen species (ROS) metabolism in fresh-cut stem lettuce were investigated. The results illustrated that GABA treatment delayed browning degree, polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activity and the expression of LsPPO. Meanwhile, higher chlorophyll and ascorbic acid contents were exhibited in GABA-treated stem lettuce, as well as the slower microbial propagation.

Zucchini fruit are notably susceptible to chilling injury when stored at low temperatures. The purpose of this experimental investigation was to assess the influence of strigolactone (ST) (5 μmol L) on mitigating chilling injury and the metabolic changes in amino acids, ascorbic acid, and abscisic acid in zucchini fruit stored at 4°C. Research findings demonstrated that ST-treated zucchini fruit displayed a significantly higher tolerance to chilling stress compared to the control group.

The rapid activation of phosphatidylinositol-specific phospholipase C (PI-PLC) occurs early after the stimulation of biotic and abiotic stress in plants, which directly associated with the calcium channel-induced calcium ion (Ca) influx. Exogenous calcium chloride (CaCl) mediates the calcium signaling transduction to promote the γ-aminobutyric acid accumulation and nutritional quality in shredded carrots whereas the generation mechanism remains uncertain. Therefore, the involvement of PI-PLC-associated phospholipid metabolism was investigated in present study.
