Distinct types of luminescence that are activated by various stimuli in a single material offer exciting developmental opportunities for functional materials. A versatile sensing platform that exhibits photoluminescence (PL), persistent luminescence (PersL), and mechanoluminescence (ML) is introduced, which enables the sensitive detection of temperature, pressure, and force/stress. The developed SrMgSiO:Eu/Dy material exhibits a linear relationship between ML intensity and force and can be used as an ML stress sensor.

Seasonal influenza A virus subtype H3N2 (A/H3N2) circulates globally and has been linked to higher hospitalization rates and summer outbreaks in temperate regions. Here, A/H3N2 circulation in Shanghai, China was systematically studied using data and materials generated by the Shanghai influenza surveillance network from 2005 to 2023. Time-series analysis of incidence and subtyping data showed that A/H3N2 co-circulated with other (sub)types and dominated in multiple seasonal influenza peaks, preferentially in summer.

Early defects in placenta development are thought to underlie a range of adverse pregnancy conditions including miscarriage, fetal growth abnormalities, preeclampsia, and stillbirth. Differentiating trophoblast stem cells undergo a choreographed allocation of syncytiotrophoblast and extravillous trophoblast cells in response to signaling cues from the developing fetus and the uterine environment. The expression and activity of transcription factors and chromatin modifying enzymes change during differentiation to appropriately reshape the chromatin landscape in each cell type.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic highlighted the need for rapid and accurate viral detection at the point-of-care testing (POCT). Compared with nucleic acid detection, lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) is a rapid and flexible method for POCT detection. However, the sensitivity of LFIA limits its use for early identification of patients with COVID-19.

Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is a growing concern as an emerging tick-borne infectious disease originating from the SFTS virus (SFTSV), a recent addition to the genus under the family of bunyaviruses. SFTS is typically identified by symptoms such as fever, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, and gastrointestinal problems, accompanied by a potentially high case fatality rate. Thus, early and accurate diagnosis is essential for effective treatment and disease management.

Endowing a single material with various types of luminescence, that is, exhibiting a simultaneous optical response to different stimuli, is vital in various fields. A photoluminescence (PL)- and mechanoluminescence (ML)-based multifunctional sensing platform is built by combining heterojunctioned ZnS/CaZnOS:Mn mechano-photonic materials using a 3D-printing technique and fiber spinning. ML-active particles are embedded in micrometer-sized cellulose fibers for flexible optical devices capable of emitting light driven by mechanical force.

The neural circuit mechanisms underlying postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) remain elusive. We hypothesized that projections from the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) to the amygdala are involved in POCD. A mouse model of POCD in which isoflurane (1.

In recent years, terahertz (THz) imaging has attracted much attention because of its ability to obtain physical and chemical information in a label-free, noninvasive and nonionizing manner. However, the low spatial resolution of traditional THz imaging systems and the weak dielectric response of biological samples hinder the application of this technology in the biomedical field. In this paper, we report a new THz near-field imaging method for a single bacteria, through the coupling effect of nanoscale radius of probe and platinum gold substrate, which greatly enhances THz near-field signal of biological samples.

Respiratory syncytial virus A (RSV-A) is one of the commonest pathogens causing acute respiratory tract infections in infants and children globally. The currently dominant circulating genotype of RSV-A, ON1, was first detected in Shanghai, China in 2011, but little data are available regarding its subsequent circulation and clinical impact here. In this work, we analyzed RSV-A infection in a cohort of patients hospitalized for acute respiratory infections in Shanghai Children's Hospital, and RSV-A was detected in ~10% of these cases.

Coxsackievirus A10 (CVA10) is one of the major causative agents of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD). To investigate the epidemiological characteristics as well as genetic features of CVA10 currently circulating in Shanghai, China, we collected a total of 9,952 sporadic HFMD cases from January 2016 to December 2020. In the past five years, CVA10 was the fourth prevalent causatives associated with HFMD in Shanghai and the overall positive rate was 2.

We report here a catalytically active nano covalent organic framework [COF(Fe)] with high drug loading capacity for reversing tumor multidrug resistance (MDR). The Fe catalytic sites in COF(Fe) could convert intracellular overexpressed HO into highly reactive ˙OH to induce oxidation stress and down-regulate MDR protein. Therefore, COF(Fe) could enhance the intracellular drug accumulation to overcome MDR, which was demonstrated both and .

Pressure is an important physical parameter and hence its monitoring is very important for different industrial and scientific applications. Although commonly used luminescent pressure sensors (ruby-AlO:Cr and SrBO:Sm) allow optical monitoring of pressure in compressed systems (usually in a diamond anvil cell; DAC), their detection resolution is limited by sensitivity, , pressure response in a form of the detected spectral shift. Here we report, a breakthrough in optical pressure sensing by developing an ultra-sensitive NIR pressure sensor (d/d = 1.

In terms of infectious diseases caused by a variety of microorganisms, the ability to promptly and accurately identify the causative agents is the first step on the path to all types of effective management of such infections. Among the various factors that are affecting global bee health, viruses have often been linked to honey bee colony losses and they pose a serious threat to the fraction of agriculture that depends on the service of pollinators. Over the past few decades, PCR-based molecular methods have provided powerful tools for rapid, specific, and sensitive detection and the quantification of difficult-to-grow pathogenic microorganisms such as viruses in honey bees.

Objective: Human astroviruses (HAstVs) are single-stranded RNA viruses of the family. Infection of classic HAstVs is one of the most common causes of acute viral gastroenteritis (infectious viral diarrhea). There is a lack of data on the prevalence and genetic characterization of classic HAstVs in acute viral gastroenteritis in the whole population.
