Article Synopsis
  • Gallbladder carcinoma (GC) is a rare digestive system cancer, primarily treated through surgery, which is currently the only known cure.
  • Laparoscopic surgery is gaining attention for GC due to its benefits like reduced blood loss, shorter recovery times, and fewer complications compared to traditional open surgery, but it also presents risks such as gallbladder perforation and tumor spread.
  • Despite some controversies and mixed study results regarding its safety and effectiveness, recent research generally leans towards supporting laparoscopic approaches for treating gallbladder carcinoma.

Background: Bile duct cyst (BDC) is a rare congenital bile duct malformation. The incidence of bile duct malignancy in BDC patients is markedly higher than that in the general population. However, few studies have been conducted on the risk factors for preoperative carcinogenesis in BDC patients.

  • Papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC) is a type of thyroid cancer that is 1 cm or smaller, and its occurrence is increasing globally; surgery is the main treatment approach.
  • There is debate over whether to routinely perform prophylactic central lymph node dissection, as it could lead to complications like hypoparathyroidism, while not doing it may leave cancerous lymph nodes in high-risk patients.
  • Identifying predictive factors for lymph node metastases in PTMC patients is crucial, with several studies highlighting factors like age, gender, and tumor characteristics, but findings are inconsistent, prompting further review and discussion in the medical community.

To meet the increasing clinical needs for 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (25OH-D3) detection, the development of an efficient and accurate high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) method for plasma 25OH-D3 quantitation is important. Since 25OH-D3 is an endogenous compound, the lack of a plasma blank increases the difficulty of accurately quantifying 25OH-D3. Selection of a method suitable for clinical monitoring among various methods for endogenous compound quantification is necessary.

Background: Schwannoma rarely originates from the recurrent laryngeal nerve, and there are few reports on schwannoma originating from the recurrent nerve in the mediastinum. Herein, we present an extremely rare case of schwannoma originating from the recurrent laryngeal nerve in the neck.

Case Summary: This is a case report of one patient diagnosed with thyroid cancer with schwannoma originating from the recurrent laryngeal nerve in the neck, which was incidentally found during a thyroidectomy, and a review of the literature.

Background: Despite the majority of papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC) patients having an excellent prognosis, cervical lymph node metastases are common. The purpose of this study was to investigate the incidence and the predictive risk factors for occult central compartment lymph node metastasis (CLNM) in PTMC patients.

Materials And Methods: 178 patients with clinically node-negative (cN0) PTMC undergoing prophylactic central compartment neck dissection in our hospital from January 2008 to Jun 2010 were enrolled.

The wide use of surgical endoclips in laparoscopic surgery has led to a variety of complications. Post-cholecystectomy endoclips migrating into the common bile duct after laparoscopic cholecystectomy is rare. A migrated endoclip can cause obstruction, serve as a nidus for stone formation, and cause cholangitis.

Article Synopsis
  • The study reviewed 8,005 patients who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy, identifying 36 (0.45%) with unsuspected gallbladder carcinoma (UGC).
  • The cancer stages varied, with 16 at T1, 11 at T2, and 9 at T3, and survival rates significantly differed by stage: 100% for T1, 75% for T2, and 0% for T3 at 5 years.
  • The research concluded that survival rates for UGC are linked to tumor stage rather than surgical methods, confirming laparoscopic cholecystectomy is suitable for patients diagnosed at T1 stage.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluates the treatment outcomes for patients with recurrent acute cholangitis related to hepatolithiasis treated at Peking Union Medical College Hospitals.
  • Out of 408 patients, 167 had emergency surgery, and 241 had selective operations post-medication; complications were slightly higher in the emergency group.
  • The findings suggest that selective operations, which are supported by advancements in drainage techniques, show lower complication rates and no deaths within 30 days post-surgery.
