Strong metal-support interactions (SMSI) are at the cutting edge of catalysis research, yet their size-dependent nature remains both widespread and subject to ongoing debate. Here, we report the discovery of bell-shaped size-dependent SMSI, and we establish its structure-SMSI-performance relationship in oxidative C-H/O-H coupling reactions. Using Au/ZnO as a prototypical catalyst, we develop a thermodynamic equilibrium model that quantitatively captures the size-dependent surface energy and tension disparities, identifying the particle size ratio as the descriptor for bell-shaped encapsulation dynamics.

Invasive fungal infection is usually caused by Candida albicans infection, which has a high incidence rate and mortality in critically ill patients. New drugs are needed to combat this pathogen since the limited treatment options currently available and increasing resistance to existing drugs. Berberine (BBR) is an active compound in Coptis chinensis, Phellodendron chinense and Radix berberidis, which is clinically used to treat inflammatory bowel disease, but its inhibitory effect on drug-resistant fungi has not been clarified.

Introduction: The strategy of adipose component transplantation has been proposed and widely used in both reconstructive and aesthetic surgery. However, there is no uniform standard for the preparation of component fat, and the volume calculation of liposuction and injection in clinical applications is mostly based on experience. This study aims to analyze the volume of component fat obtained during clinical series.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined how adding nitrogen fertilizers affects the remobilization of cadmium in rice fields, highlighting increased cadmium levels in rice due to ammonia nitrogen (NH-N) compared to nitrogen (NO-N).
  • Organic acids secreted by rice roots, particularly under NH-N treatment, were found to play a significant role in increasing soluble cadmium content and impacting microbial community functions.
  • The research suggests a complex interaction between nutrient application, cadmium levels, and microbial dynamics that could elevate cadmium exposure through rice consumption.

Titanium potassium oxalate had been mixed into the electrolyte to improve the anti-corrosion property of the micro arc oxidation coating on the surface of the aluminium alloy. The surface and cross-section of the coating at different titanium potassium oxalate concentrations had been observed by scanning electron microscopy, showing that when the titanium potassium oxalate concentration was 10 g/L, the coating compactness was better. Additionally, the element content of the coating had been studied by the energy dispersive spectrometer, and results proved that the coating consisted of Al, O, Ti, Si, and P.

The creation of defects in crystalline structures can tune metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) properties, such as improving their adsorptive and catalytic performance with producing more porosity and active sites. In this work, the bimetallic UiO-66 containing Zn and Zr was prepared. And then UiO-66 with missing cluster defects (UiO-66-1/3) were obtained by acid washing to remove the Zn nodes.

Sarcopenia is characterized by a degeneration of muscle mass and strength that incurs impaired mobility, posing grievous impacts on the quality of life and well-being of older adults worldwide. In 2018, a new international consensus was formulated to incorporate ultrasound imaging of the rectus femoris (RF) muscle for early sarcopenia assessment. Nonetheless, current clinical RF muscle identification and delineation procedures are manual, subjective, inaccurate, and challenging.

Background: Centrosome amplification (CA) has been shown to be capable of initiating tumorigenesis with metastatic potential and enhancing cell invasion. We were interested in discovering how centrosome amplification-associated signature affects the prediction of prognosis and response to therapy in kidney renal clear cell carcinoma (KIRC).

Methods And Materials: The TCGA-KIRC dataset was used to construct a centrosome amplification-associated signature using the random survival forest analysis and Cox regression analysis, and the ICGC and GEO datasets were employed for signature validation.

In the post-anesthesia care unit, there is a high occurrence of residual neuromuscular blockade, which puts patients at risk of negative consequences such as hypoxia. Assessment based on the train-of-four ratio (TOFR) has been used to avoid residual neuromuscular blockade when the TOFR is greater than 0.9, measured at the adductor pollicis muscle (APM).

Background: Patients with knee osteoarthritis (KOA) often present lower extremity motor dysfunction. However, traditional radiography is a static assessment and cannot achieve long-term dynamic functional monitoring. Plantar pressure signals have demonstrated potential applications in the diagnosis and rehabilitation monitoring of KOA.

Background: The interaction between soil characteristics and microbial communities is crucial for poplar growth under different planting densities. Yet, little is understood about their relationships and how they respond to primary environmental drivers across varying planting densities.

Results: In this study, we investigated poplar growth metrics, soil characteristics, and community assembly of soil bacterial and fungal communities in four poplar genotypes (M1316, BT17, S86, and B331) planted at low, medium, and high densities.

Owing to the high lipophilicity of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB), they easily accumulate in dairy products. Although usually present at very low levels, they pose a serious threat to human health. Therefore, developing a sensitive and reliable method for detecting PCB in dairy products is crucial.

Zinc bromine flow battery (ZBFB) is a promising battery technology for stationary energy storage. However, challenges specific to zinc anodes must be resolved, including zinc dendritic growth, hydrogen evolution reaction, and the occurrence of "dead zinc". Traditional additives suppress side reactions and zinc dendrite formation by altering the solvation structure of Zn and adsorbing onto the zinc surface through only a limited number of zincophilic sites, resulting in weak adsorption on zinc metal and potential inability to simultaneously optimize the solvation structure of zinc ions.

Developing antifouling biosensors capable of performing robustly in complex human body fluids is crucial for biomarker diagnosis and health monitoring. Herein, an antifouling and highly sensitive and stable biosensor was constructed through the self-assembly of the designed conjugates composed of a multifunctional peptide (MP) and PEGylated distearoylphosphatidylethanolamine (DSPE-PEG). The self-assembly capability of the DSPE-PEG-MP was demonstrated clearly through coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulation and transmission electron microscopy, and it can be effectively self-assembled onto the electrode surface modified with gold nanoparticles.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to explore how depression relates to biological aging and mortality risk, and whether accelerated aging serves as a mediator in this relationship.
  • Researchers analyzed data from 12,761 adults, finding that major depression is linked to increased biological aging and a higher risk of death, especially from cardiovascular issues.
  • The findings suggest that while depression leads to accelerated aging and higher mortality, this aging factor only partially mediates the connection to overall and cardiovascular-related deaths.

BACKGROUNDː: Stroke, primarily resulting from ischemic conditions, is the foremost cause of mortality and long-term impairment and is frequently associated with narrowing of the carotid arteries. Although carotid endarterectomy (CEA) is the treatment of choice, it carries the risk of cerebral ischemia and reduced blood flow. Transcranial Doppler (TCD) ultrasound offers a nonintrusive method to assess cerebral blood circulation during CEA, potentially enhancing surgical outcomes.

Quantitative muscle function analysis based on ultrasound imaging, has been used for various applications, particularly with recent development of deep learning methods. The nature of speckle noises in ultrasound images poses challenges to accurate and reliable data annotation for supervised learning algorithms. To obtain a large and reliable dataset without manual scanning and labeling, we proposed a synthesizing pipeline to provide synthetic ultrasound datasets of muscle movement with an accurate ground truth, allowing augmenting, training, and evaluating models for different tasks.
