The complex pathology of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is a main contributor to the difficulties in achieving a successful therapeutic regimen. Thyroxine (T4) administration has been shown to prevent the cognitive impairments induced by mTBI in mice but the mechanism is poorly understood. To understand the underlying mechanism, we carried out a single cell transcriptomic study to investigate the spatiotemporal effects of T4 on individual cell types in the hippocampus and frontal cortex at three post-injury stages in a mouse model of mTBI.

Topological insulators provide a unique platform to study non-reciprocal charge transport due to their surface states, especially quantum Hall states under an external magnetic field. Here we report the observation of non-reciprocal charge transport mediated by quantum Hall states in devices composed of the intrinsic topological insulator Sn-BiSbTeS, which is attributed to asymmetric scattering between quantum Hall states and Dirac surface states.

The BDNF mimetic R13 has a significant positive effect on both tissue metabolism and behavioral outcome after TBI, indicating a promising therapeutic. To understand the mechanism of action for this intervention, we determined whether there was any association between the underlying metabolic insult and any improvement in resting state functional connectivity (FC) with MRI, or whether R13 acts through mechanisms unrelated to metabolic recovery.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) often results in a reduction of the capacity of cells to sustain energy demands, thus, compromising neuronal function and plasticity. Here we show that the mitochondrial activator humanin (HN) counteracts a TBI-related reduction in mitochondrial bioenergetics, including oxygen consumption rate. HN normalized the disruptive action of TBI on memory function, and restored levels of synaptic proteins (synapsin 1 and p-CREB).

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is major neurological burden globally, and effective treatments are urgently needed. TBI is characterized by a reduction in energy metabolism and synaptic function that seems a primary cause of neuronal dysfunction. R13, a small drug and BDNF mimetic showed promising results in improving spatial memory and anxiety-like behavior after TBI.

Clinical evidence indicates that injury to the brain elicits systemic metabolic disturbances that contributes to the brain pathology. Since dietary fructose is metabolized in the liver, we explored mechanisms by which traumatic brain injury (TBI) and dietary fructose influence liver function and their possible repercussions to brain. Consumption of fructose contributed to the detrimental effects of TBI on liver operation, in terms of glucose and lipid metabolism, de novo lipogenesis, lipid peroxidation.

Here, we observe an interesting exchange bias effect, indicating successful interfacial magnetic coupling, in CrI/MnBiTe ferromagnetic insulator/antiferromagnetic topological insulator (FMI/AFM-TI) heterostructure devices. The devices originally exhibit a negative exchange bias field, which decays with increasing temperature and is unaffected by the back-gate voltage.

Most efforts to understand the pathology of traumatic brain injury (TBI) have been centered on the brain, ignoring the role played by systemic physiology. Gut-derived serotonin is emerging as a major regulator of systemic homeostasis involving various organs and tissues throughout the body. Here, we shed light on the roles occupied by gut-derived serotonin and its downstream metabolic targets in the systemic pathogenesis of TBI.

Heterostructures of graphene and various semiconductors have been explored for this purpose, while non-ideal interfaces often limit the performance. The topological insulator (TI) is a natural hybrid system, with the surface states hosting high-mobility Dirac fermions and the small-bandgap semiconducting bulk state strongly absorbing light.

To shed light on the impact of systemic physiology on the pathology of traumatic brain injury (TBI), we examine the effects of TBI (concussive injury) and dietary fructose on critical aspects of lipid homeostasis in the brain and liver of young-adult rats. Lipids are integral components of brain structure and function, and the liver has a role on the synthesis and metabolism of lipids. Fructose is mainly metabolized in the liver with potential implications for brain function.

To investigate the mechanism of oncogenic tolerance, we induced Hras in single murine epidermal cells and followed them long term. We observed that Hras promotes an early and transient clonal expansion driven by increased progenitor renewal that is replaced with an increase in progenitor differentiation leading to reduced growth.

Objective: We aimed to investigate whether the gut microbiota contributes to differential metabolic responses to fructose.
Methods: Eight-week-old male C57BL/6J (B6), DBA/2J (DBA), and FVB/NJ (FVB) mice were given 8% fructose solution or regular water (control) for 12 wk.
Polaritons in two-dimensional (2D) materials have shown their unique capabilities to concentrate light into deep subwavelength scales. Precise control of the excitation and propagation of 2D polaritons has remained a central challenge for future on-chip nanophotonic devices and circuits. To solve this issue, we exploit Cherenkov radiation, a classic physical phenomenon that occurs when a charged particle moves at a velocity greater than the phase velocity of light in that medium, in low-dimensional material heterostructures.

Here, we show that intra-amniotic lentiviral injection can efficiently transduce progenitor cells of the adult mammary gland and use that as a platform to functionally screen over 500 genetic lesions for functional roles in tumor formation. Targeted progenitors establish long-term clones of both luminal and myoepithelial lineages in adult animals, and via lineage tracing with stable barcodes, we found that each mouse mammary gland is generated from a defined number of ∼120 early progenitor cells that expand uniformly with equal growth potential.

Understanding how individuals react differently to the same treatment is a major concern in precision medicine. Metabolic challenges such as the one posed by high fructose intake are important determinants of disease mechanisms. We embarked on studies to determine how fructose affects differential metabolic dysfunctions across genetically dissimilar mice, namely, C57BL/6 J (B6), DBA/2 J (DBA) and FVB/NJ (FVB), by integrating physiological and gene regulatory mechanisms.

Despite the high consumption of blueberries, information about its effects on brain plasticity and function under conditions of brain trauma is limited. The efficacy of dietary blueberry (BB) supplementation to mitigate the effects of TBI on plasticity markers and associated behavioral function in a rodent model of concussive injury are assessed.

Strain effects are especially interesting in atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) materials, where unusually large strain can be achieved without breaking them. Measuring the strain distribution in 2D materials at the nanometer scale is therefore greatly important but is extremely challenging experimentally.

Dietary fructose is a major contributor to the epidemic of diabetes and obesity, and it is an excellent model to study metabolic syndrome. Based on previous studies that Bgn gene occupies a central position in a network of genes in the brain in response to fructose consumption, we assessed the capacity of Bgn to modulate the action of fructose on brain and body. We exposed male biglycan knockout mice (Bgn) to fructose for 7 weeks, and results showed that Bgn mice compensated for a decrement in learning and memory performance when exposed to fructose.

Hippocampal dysfunction during TBI results in cognitive decline that may escalate to other neurological disorders, the molecular basis of which is hidden in the genomic programs of individual cells. Using the unbiased single cell sequencing method Drop-seq, we report that concussive TBI affects previously undefined cell populations, in addition to classical hippocampal cell types.

Chronic fructose ingestion is linked to the global epidemic of metabolic syndrome (MetS), and poses a serious threat to brain function. We asked whether a short period (one week) of fructose ingestion potentially insufficient to establish peripheral metabolic disorder could impact brain function. We report that the fructose treatment had no effect on liver/body weight ratio, weight gain, glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity, was sufficient to reduce several aspects of hippocampal plasticity.
