Background: Pulmonary embolism (PE) as a preventable and potentially fatal noncommunicable disease was believed to have a lower incidence in Asian populations compared to Western populations. However, the incidence and mortality rates of PE in China and the impact of venous thromboembolism (VTE) prevention system constructions on PE still lack nationwide evidence.

Methods: For this nationwide hospital-based observational study, we used data from the National Hospital Quality Monitoring System (HQMS) and public database in China.

Lithium batteries have been widely used in various fields, however, further research needs to be conducted to improve their stability and long-term storage performance for the highly active lithium metal anode. Herein, an organic-inorganic composite film composed of polypropylene carbonate (PPC), lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulphonyl)imide (LiTFSI) and LiLaZrNbO (LLZNO) is fabricated on the lithium foil surface by spin-coating technique to passivate the lithium anode and regulate the ion transport behavior. The Li/CF battery with the optimized composite film coated lithium anode exhibits excellent discharge capacity (1006.

Reperfusion strategies such as vascular thrombolysis and thrombectomy are the first-line treatments recommended for acute ischemic stroke. However, only half of these patients achieve functional independence after endovascular reperfusion of large vessel occlusions. Timely restoration of blood flow is crucial, but not all reperfusion results in benefit, a phenomenon termed futile reperfusion.

  • Ginseng, particularly its component Ginsenoside Rb1 (GRb1), shows promise in treating ulcerative colitis (UC) by reducing intestinal inflammation and improving the integrity of the intestinal barrier.
  • In laboratory studies on mice with UC, GRb1 treatment led to lower levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines and higher levels of anti-inflammatory cytokines, positively affecting intestinal health.
  • The research suggests that GRb1's beneficial effects are linked to its interaction with specific signaling pathways (VDR, PPARγ, and NF-κB) that regulate inflammation and barrier function in the intestines.

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a progressive and rapidly fatal disease with an intricate etiology. Identifying biomarkers for early PAH lesions based on the exploration of subtle biological processes is significant for timely diagnosis and treatment. In the present study, nine distinct cell populations identified based on gene expression profiles revealed high heterogeneity in cell composition ratio, biological function, distribution preference, and communication patterns in PAH.

Thermal resistance at interfaces/contacts stands as a persistent and increasingly critical issue, which hinders ultimate scaling and the performance of electronic devices. Compared to the extensive research on contact electrical resistance, contact thermal resistance and its mitigation strategies have received relatively less attention. Here, we report on an effective, in situ, and energy-efficient approach for enhancing thermal transport through the contact between semiconducting nanoribbons.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines gender differences in clinical manifestations and in-hospital mortality rates for patients with pulmonary embolism (PE), revealing that males face a higher risk of death during hospitalization compared to females.
  • Data was analyzed from over 15,000 patients, showing that males reported symptoms like chest pain and hemoptysis more frequently, while females experienced higher rates of dyspnea and fever.
  • Results indicated that specific symptoms were linked to increased mortality, highlighting the importance of recognizing these gender-specific differences in clinical settings.

Vibration control is extremely important for countless mechanical systems. Inerter is a two-terminal dynamic element proposed in 2002, based on analogy between mechanical system and electric system. Dynamic characteristic of an ideal inerter is pure inertia.

The field of oncology has transformed in recent years, with treatments shifting from traditional surgical resection and radiation therapy to more diverse and customized approaches, one of which is immunotherapy. ICD (immunogenic cell death) belongs to a class of regulatory cell death modalities that reactivate the immune response by facilitating the interaction between apoptotic cells and immune cells and releasing specific signaling molecules, and DAMPs (damage-associated molecular patterns). The inducers of ICD can elevate the expression of specific proteins to optimize the TME (tumor microenvironment).

Article Synopsis
  • Brain inflammation is a major factor in ineffective treatment outcomes after mechanical thrombectomy for stroke, with the spleen being a key source of inflammatory cells.
  • This study will investigate Remote Administration of Hypothermia (RAH) as a method to reduce inflammation and protect the brain by applying cold therapy to the spleen in stroke patients undergoing treatment.
  • The research will measure both the safety and effectiveness of RAH on inflammatory responses and brain injury, potentially paving the way for larger trials and establishing it as a beneficial adjunct treatment in acute ischemic stroke cases.

Studies have indicated that reduced serum ALT levels are commonly linked to aging and are known to predict poor outcomes in many clinical conditions as potential frailty indicators. There are close connections between the brain and peripheral organs, particularly the liver. In patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS), the interactive effects may change ALT levels, which in turn influence stroke outcomes.

The potentially lethal zoonotic disease alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is caused by the metacestode larval stages of the tapeworm . Metacestode growth and proliferation occurs within the inner organs of mammalian hosts, which is associated with complex molecular parasite-host interactions. The host has developed various ways to resist a parasitic infection, and the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is one of the most important strategies.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is often associated with lung squamous cell carcinoma (LUSC), which has the same etiology (smoking, inflammation, oxidative stress, microenvironmental changes, and genetics). Smoking, inflammation, and airway remodeling are the most important and classical mechanisms of COPD comorbidity in LUSC patients. Cancer can occur during repeated airway damage and repair (airway remodeling).

The functional components in tartary buckwheat leaf powder can give flour products higher nutritional value. To comprehensively realize the high-value utilization of tartary buckwheat and its by-products, electric stone mill powder (EMP), ultra-fine mill powder (UMP), steel mill powder (SMP), and grain mill powder (GMP) from tartary buckwheat leaves were used in the preparation of wheat dough, and this was used to explore their effects on dough properties and protein microstructure. With an increase in tartary buckwheat leaf powder, the hydration characteristics, protein weakening rate, and starch gelatinization characteristics of the dough changed, and the water holding capacity and swelling capacity decreased.

Despite advances in intravenous thrombolysis and endovascular thrombectomy, numerous acute ischemic stroke survivors continue to experience various disability levels. The nitric oxide (NO) donor, Glyceryl Trinitrate (GTN), has been identified as a potential neuroprotective agent against ischemic damage. We evaluated the safety and feasibility of intravenous GTN in AIS patients.

Recent studies have uncovered that noncoding sequence variants may relate to Axenfeld-Rieger syndrome (ARS), a rare developmental anomaly with genetic heterogeneity. However, how these genomic regions are functionally and structurally associated with ARS is still unclear. In this study, we performed genome-wide linkage analysis and whole-genome sequencing in a Chinese family with ARS and identified a heterozygous deletion of about 570 kb (termed LOH-1) in the intergenic sequence between paired-like homeodomain transcription factor 2 (PITX2) and family with sequence similarity 241 member A.
