Diabetic patients have increased susceptibility to acute kidney injury (AKI), and AKI could progress to chronic tubulointerstitial injury and fibrosis, referred to as AKI-to-chronic kidney disease (AKI-to-CKD) transition. However, whether diabetes directly promotes AKI-to-CKD transition is not known. We previously showed that reticulon-1A (RTN1A), a gene highly upregulated in injured renal tubular epithelial cells (RTECs), promotes AKI-to-CKD transition in nondiabetic settings.

Contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CI-AKI) is one of the main causes of hospital-acquired renal failure, and still lacks of effective treatments. Previously, we demonstrated that αKlotho, which is an anti-aging protein that highly expresses in the kidney, has therapeutic activity in CI-AKI through promoting autophagy. However, the specific mechanism underlying αKlotho-mediated autophagy remains unclear.

Our previous manuscript showed that thrombocytopenia predicts all-cause mortality in Chinese hemodialysis (HD) patients. Based on the role of platelets in coagulation, clot formation, and systemic inflammation, we speculate that high platelets increase risk of thrombo-embolic events, hence the mortality. However, research evidence is currently lacking.

Article Synopsis
  • Peritoneal dialysis (PD), specifically automated PD (APD), has potential benefits for patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) needing immediate dialysis, though evidence comparing APD to temporary hemodialysis (HD) is limited in China.
  • A multicenter randomized controlled trial with 116 ESRD patients showed that APD resulted in significantly fewer dialysis-related complications after one year compared to HD (25.9% vs. 56.9%).
  • APD also had lower initial hospitalization costs (27,008.39 CNY) than HD (42,597.54 CNY) but did not show significant differences in catheter survival, peritonitis-free survival, or overall patient survival rates, providing insights

Article Synopsis
  • Patients with end-stage renal disease undergoing hemodialysis in China face a high rate of hyperkalemia (HK), a condition that can lead to serious heart issues, with 75.5% experiencing at least one episode over six months.
  • Among those who had HK, a significant majority (78.6%) had recurrent episodes, highlighting the chronic nature of the condition.
  • Despite the prevalence of HK, very few patients (only 5.3%) were treated with potassium binders, indicating a gap in effective long-term potassium management for these patients.

Article Synopsis
  • A significant number of patients with IgA nephropathy (IgAN) were excluded from the TESTING study due to low proteinuria levels after intensive therapy, highlighting the need to investigate their long-term health outcomes.* -
  • A retrospective study of 88 excluded patients showed that a majority received renin-angiotensin system blockers and maintained stable proteinuria remission without needing immunosuppressive therapy (IST).* -
  • Long-term analysis indicated that patients who experienced a relapse of proteinuria and required IST had worse kidney outcomes compared to those who maintained remission, especially after 48 to 60 months of follow-up.*

Acinetobacter baumannii is currently one of the most important opportunistic pathogens causing severe nosocomial infections worldwide. Quorum Sensing (QS) system is a widespread mechanism in bacteria to coordinate group behavior by sensing the density of bacterial populations and affect eukaryotic host cell. In Acinetobacter baumannii, AbaI protein is used as QS molecule synthetase to synthesize N- acyl homoserine lactones (AHLs).

Peritoneal fibrosis is a common pathological response to long-term peritoneal dialysis (PD) and a major cause for PD discontinuation. Understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying the induction and progression of peritoneal fibrosis is of great interest. In our study, in vitro study revealed that signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) is a key factor in fibroblast activation and extracellular matrix (ECM) synthesis.

Sepsis-induced acute kidney injury (S-AKI) is the most common type of acute kidney injury (AKI), accompanied by elevated morbidity and mortality rates. This study investigated the mechanism by which lipid droplets (LDs) degraded via autophagy (lipophagy)required for RAB7 regulated ferroptosis in the pathogenesis of S-AKI. Here, we constructed the S-AKI model in vitro and in vivo to elucidate the potential relationship of lipophagy and ferroptosis, and we first confirmed that the activation of lipophagy promoted renal tubular epithelial cell ferroptosis and renal damage in S-AKI.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) constitutes a prevalent clinical syndrome characterized by elevated morbidity and mortality rates, emerging as a significant public health issue. This study investigates the interplay between endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, unfolded protein response (UPR), and ER-associated degradation (ER-phagy) in the pathogenesis of AKI. We employed four distinct murine models of AKI-induced by contrast media, ischemia-reperfusion injury, cisplatin, and folic acid-to elucidate the relationship between ER-phagy, ER stress, and apoptosis.

Article Synopsis
  • This study wanted to find out if a special measurement (called fractal dimension, or FD) of heart structure can help predict heart problems in patients with kidney issues (end-stage renal disease, or ESRD).
  • They looked at 104 people who had heart scans (MRI) and found that those with more complex heart structures had a higher risk of developing heart failure.
  • The researchers concluded that measuring this heart complexity (FD) could help doctors understand which ESRD patients might be at greater risk for serious heart problems in the future.
