Objective: Due to the limited operating space in the magnetic resonance (MR) environment, there is coupled motion in the insertion mechanism, which not only reduces the flexibility of the robot but also challenges the insertion path planning. Meanwhile, the path planning is also restricted by the bending rule of the flexible needle, thus the bending model of the needle is also essentially built.

Approach: This paper proposes a path planner for the flexible needle based on both the coupled motion kinematics of the insertion robot and the bending model of the flexible needle.

Background: Saturated biopsy is widely used in a histopathological examination of prostate biopsy surgery by expanding the target regions and the increasing the number of insertions.

Methods: The paper proposed a path planning algorithm for multiple targets with a single entry for a cannula flexible needle with variable curvatures. The algorithm is based on modified rapidly-exploring random trees (RRTs), and the variable-curvature motions of the flexible needle are used to achieve optimal path.

Percutaneous insertion is one of the most common minimally invasive procedures. Compared with traditional straight rigid needles, bevel-tipped flexible needle can generate curved trajectories to avoid obstacles and sensitive organs. However, the nonlinear large deflection problem challenges the bending prediction of the needle, which dramatically influences the surgical success rate.

Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), an artificial fluorosurfactant and global contaminant, is used widely in various consumer products. In this study, we investigated the function of estrogen receptor β (ERβ) in PFOS-induced bile acid and cholesterol metabolism disorders and gut microbiome using ERβ knockout mice that were exposed to PFOS by gavage. Our results showed that a daily dose of 5 mg PFOS/kg significantly induced hydropic degeneration and vacuolation in hepatic cells, reduced bile acid, and cholesterol levels in liver tissue, and influenced the abundance and composition of gut microbiota.

Niemann Pick Type C1 Like 1 (NPC1L1) protein plays a key role in intestinal and hepatic cholesterol metabolism in humans. Genetic variation in NPC1L1 has been widely studied in recent years. We analyzed NPC1L1 single nucleotide polymorphisms in Chinese gallstone disease patients to investigate their association with gallstone disease.

Phyto-oestrogens are a family of plant-derived xeno-oestrogens that appear to have beneficial effects on human health. To date, no data are available about phyto-oestrogen consumption affecting liver health in a population. The present study aimed to explore the relationship of urinary phyto-oestrogen metabolites with serum liver enzymes in US adults.

Phyto-oestrogens are a family of plant-derived xeno-oestrogens that have been shown to prevent cancer in some studies. Whether phyto-oestrogen intake affects obesity status in a population is still unclear. In the present cross-sectional study, we examined the association of urinary phyto-oestrogen metabolites with obesity and metabolic parameters in children and adults.

In robot-assisted needle-based medical procedures, path planning for a flexible needle is challenging with regard to time consumption and searching robustness for the solution due to the nonholonomic motion of the needle tip and the presence of anatomic obstacles and sensitive organs in the intended needle path. We propose a novel and fast path planning algorithm for a robot-assisted active flexible needle. The algorithm is based on Rapidly-Exploring Random Trees combined with reachability-guided strategy and greedy heuristic strategy.

This paper deals with the development of a coordinated control system for a robot and robot-driven shape memory alloy (SMA) actuated needle to follow a curvilinear path for percutaneous intervention. The robot driving the needle is considered as the outer loop and the non-linear SMA actuated flexible needle system forms the inner loop. The two feedback control loops are coordinated in such a way that the robot drives the needle considering the needle's actual deflection so that the needle tip reaches the target location with an acceptable accuracy.

Background: It is unclear whether liver transplantation is associated with an increased incidence of post-transplant head and neck cancer. This comprehensive meta-analysis evaluated the association between liver transplantation and the risk of head and neck cancer using data from all available studies.

Methods: PubMed and Web of Science were systematically searched to identify all relevant publications up to March 2014.

Article Synopsis
  • The CYP7A1 -204A>C gene polymorphism was evaluated for its potential links to gallbladder stone disease (GSD) and serum lipid levels, but findings were mixed.
  • Five studies indicated no significant association between the polymorphism and GSD risk, despite a slight increase in risk observed.
  • However, the polymorphism showed a significant correlation with serum lipid levels, particularly in the Asian population, revealing higher triglycerides and cholesterol levels in certain genotypes.

Background: In this study, we evaluated the association between these polymorphisms and gallstone disease using meta-analysis and compared the hepatic ABCG5/G8 mRNA expression and biliary lipids composition in patients with different genotypes of T400K and Y54C.

Methods: Data were analyzed using the Stata/SE 11.0 software and a random- effects model was applied irrespective of between-study heterogeneity.

Acat2 [gene name: sterol O-acyltransferase 2 (SOAT2)] esterifies cholesterol in enterocytes and hepatocytes. This study aims to identify repressor elements in the human SOAT2 promoter and evaluate their in vivo relevance. We identified TG-interacting factor 1 (Tgif1) to function as an important repressor of SOAT2.

We investigated whether: (1) liver X receptor (LXR)-driven induction of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and other LXR-mediated effects on cholesterol metabolism depend on intestinal cholesterol absorption; and (2) combined treatment with the LXR agonist GW3965 and the cholesterol absorption inhibitor ezetimibe results in synergistic effects on cholesterol metabolism that could be beneficial for treatment of atherosclerosis. Mice were fed 0.2 % cholesterol and treated with GW3965+ezetimibe, GW3965 or ezetimibe.
