Clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) is the most common kidney malignancy, with a poor prognosis for advanced-stage patients. Identifying key biomarkers involved in tumor progression is crucial for improving treatment outcomes. In this study, we employed an integrated approach combining single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) and bulk RNA sequencing (bulk RNA-seq) to identify biomarkers associated with ccRCC progression and prognosis.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores the connection between the serum uric acid to lymphocyte ratio (ULR) and clinical outcomes in patients suffering from cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST), suggesting that ULR serves as an effective marker of inflammation and prognosis in this condition.
  • Researchers analyzed data from 636 CVST patients, utilizing logistic regression and a nomogram to predict poor outcomes, identifying factors such as age, infection, and intracranial complications as significant predictors.
  • The results indicate that ULR can independently predict poor outcomes, and the newly developed nomogram offers a reliable tool for personalized risk assessments and treatment strategies for CVST patients, aiming to enhance overall patient care.

Conventional chemotherapy drugs are difficult to effectively target tumor tissue, leading to poor treatment outcomes and side effects. Actively targeted and stimuli-responsive nanomedicine greatly improves this situation, allowing for more precise drug accumulation at tumor sites. Herein, carboxymethyl-β-cyclodextrin (CMCD) - based host-guest nanocomposites (NPs) encapsulating hydroxycamptothecin (HCPT) were fabricated, which responded to esterase and had the function of targeting CD 44 receptors and the nucleus.

Optoelectronic tweezers (OETs) represent a flexible, high-throughput method for manipulating micro/nano particles or cells. This technique involves not only light-actuated dielectrophoresis (LDEP) but also light-actuated AC electroosmosis (LACE), which occurs concurrently in OETs devices. Despite this, the combination of negative LDEP and LACE has been relatively unexplored in previous research.

Two phosphates, KZnPO and NHZnPO, were successfully synthesized using a solid-state reaction method and characterized single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Both of their structures feature a three-way skeleton composed of isolated PO and ZnO tetrahedra, with K/NH cations occupying the spaces within the frameworks to balance charges. These compounds are isostructural and crystallize in the noncentrosymmetric 6 space group.

Tobacco use is known to cause health damage, partly by changing the mouth, respiratory tract, and gut-related microbiomes. This study aims to identify the associations between the human microbiome detected in domestic wastewater and the population smoking rate. Metagenomic sequencing and a biomarker discovery algorithm were employed to identify microorganisms as potential microbial biomarkers of smoking through wastewater-based epidemiology.

  • In mouse models, knocking out the PLA2G2A gene reduces atherosclerotic plaque volume, but clinical trials with the sPLA2 inhibitor Varespladib haven’t effectively lowered cardiovascular risk, highlighting the need for further research on PLA2G2A's mechanisms.
  • Using single-cell transcriptome data from carotid plaques with patient info, researchers found that PLA2G2A is mainly expressed in vascular fibroblasts and interacts significantly with macrophages, especially in early plaque stages related to inflammation.
  • The study concludes that PLA2G2A promotes early plaque progression by activating macrophage-related pathways and suggests its serum levels could be valuable for diagnosing mild carotid artery stenosis.

Posterior uveitis is a leading cause of vision impairment and blindness globally due to its detrimental effects on the choroid and retina. The condition is worsened by oxidative stress, which heightens inflammation and perpetuates a cycle of damage that current treatments only temporarily relieve. To address this, a novel treatment involving the in situ crystallization of ultrasmall cerium oxide nanoparticles (≈3 nm) on mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) extracellular vesicles (EVs) for the management of primed mycobacterial uveitis (PMU) is developed.

  • Certain plant endophytes have shown potential in breaking down organic pollutants, specifically polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), but their effectiveness after culture and in real-world soil remediation is still uncertain.
  • A study found that resveratrol enhances the PAH degradation ability of an endophyte called C1 while having little effect on native soil bacteria, suggesting a selective boosting effect.
  • The combination of resveratrol and the endophyte C1 in contaminated soil resulted in significantly improved PAH removal rates, indicating a promising new bioremediation method that utilizes the interaction between plant-produced metabolites and endophytic bacteria.

Electrocatalysis plays a pivotal role in driving the progress of modern technologies and industrial processes such as energy conversion and emission reduction. Perovskite oxides, an important family of electrocatalysts, have garnered substantial attention in diverse catalytic reactions because of their highly tunable composition and structure, as well as their considerable activity and stability. This review delves into the mechanisms of electrocatalytic reactions that use perovskite oxides as electrocatalysts, while also providing a comprehensive summary of the potential key factors that influence catalytic activity across various reactions.

While spatial and time-resolved anti-counterfeiting technologies have gained increasing attention owing to their excellent tunable photoluminescence, achieving high-security-level anti-counterfeiting remains a challenge. Herein, we developed a spatial-time-dual-resolved anti-counterfeiting system using zero-dimensional (0D) organic-inorganic Mn(II) metal halides: (EMMZ)MnBr (named M-1, EMMZ=1-Ethyl-3-Methylimidazolium Bromide) and (EDMMZ)MnBr (named M-2, EDMMZ=1-Ethyl-2,3-Dimethylimidazolium Bromide). M-1 shows a bright green emission with a quantum yield of 78 %.

Adipose tissue macrophages (ATMs) play important roles in maintaining adipose tissue homeostasis and orchestrating metabolic inflammation. Given the extensive functional heterogeneity and phenotypic plasticity of ATMs, identification of the authentically pathogenic ATM subpopulation under obese setting is thus necessitated. Herein, we performed single-nucleus RNA sequencing (snRNA-seq) and unraveled a unique maladaptive ATM subpopulation defined as ATF4PDIA3ACSL4CCL2 inflammatory and metabolically activated macrophages (iMAMs), in which PDIA3 is required for the maintenance of their migratory and pro-inflammatory properties.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) stands as one of the most aggressively advancing and lethal malignancies. Sorafenib is presently endorsed as a primary therapy for advanced liver cancer, but its resistance presents a formidable challenge. Previous studies have implicated a connection between post-sorafenib discontinuation rebound and the development of drug resistance, yet the underlying mechanism remains elusive.

Background: Teprotumumab, an IGF-1R monoclonal antibody, has shown significant efficacy in treating thyroid eye disease (TED). However, since teprotumumab was launched in 2020 and first approved in the United States, there were limited reports of post-marketing adverse events (AEs). In this study, we aimed to mine and analyze the AEs signals with teprotumumab on the basis of the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) to provide instructions in clinical practice concerning adverse reactions and assistance in drug development and import/export into other countries.

Phase control over cation exchange (CE) reactions has emerged as an important approach for the synthesis of nanomaterials (NMs), enabling precise determination of their reactivity and properties. Although factors such as crystal structure and morphology have been studied for the phase engineering of CE reactions in NMs, there remains a lack of systematic investigation to reveal the impact for the factors in heterogeneous materials. Herein, we report a molybdenum disulfide induced phase control method for synthesizing multidimensional CoS-MoS heteronanostructures (HNs) via cation exchange.
