Article Synopsis
  • - This study aims to compare the long-term risk of developing type 2 diabetes (T2D) among women who had gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) versus those with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT).
  • - Analyzing data over 25 years, researchers found that women with GDM, especially older Māori women or those with socioeconomic challenges, had a higher risk of developing T2D compared to those with IGT, with the first five years after childbirth being crucial for prevention.
  • - The research emphasizes the need for early and tailored interventions for women post-GDM, taking into account factors like age, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status to effectively reduce the risk of T2D.

Background: The extent to which type 2 diabetes (T2D) reduces life expectancy depends on the risk of complications. We aimed to characterise the relationship between risk factors for diabetes complications and life expectancy, in individuals with T2D, free from major chronic disease, in a regional database linked with national New Zealand health databases.

Methods: A prospective cohort study design was employed, analysing data from individuals with T2D drawn from the comprehensive Diabetes Care Support Service database (1994-2018).

Lupus nephritis (LN) is a prevalent and severe manifestation of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), leading to significant morbidity and mortality. OTUB1, a deubiquitinating enzyme, has emerged as a potential therapeutic target due to its role in cellular protection and regulation of ferroptosis, a form of cell death linked to LN. Our study revealed significantly reduced OTUB1 expression in the glomeruli of LN patients and podocytes, correlated with disease severity.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores the link between specific gene polymorphisms (ABCB1 C3435T and PAI-1 4G/5G) and adverse reactions induced by glucocorticoids (GCs) in nephrotic syndrome (NS) patients.
  • In a sample of 513 NS patients, the researchers found that ABCB1 C3435T was a risk factor for steroid-induced avascular necrosis of the femoral head (SANFH), while PAI-1 4G/5G was linked to both SANFH and steroid diabetes mellitus (S-DM).
  • The study suggests that testing for these gene variants before starting GC treatment could help identify

  • Hypokalemia (low potassium levels) has been linked to an increased risk of peritoneal dialysis (PD)-associated peritonitis, but this study investigates whether this association holds up when accounting for factors like malnutrition and other health conditions.
  • Researchers used a large national dataset to analyze the relationship between serum potassium levels and the occurrence of peritonitis, employing various statistical models to reduce bias between patients with and without hypokalemia.
  • Findings showed that while patients with potassium levels below 4.0 mmol/L had a higher incidence of peritonitis, when accounting for other variables, low potassium was not independently associated with a higher risk of peritonitis or treatment failure.

Background: IgA nephropathy (IgAN) is the most common form of primary glomerulonephritis in the world, but the disease pathogenesis noncoding is yet to be elucidated. Previous studies have revealed regulatory functions for long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) in various diseases; however, the roles of lncRNA in IgAN and regulation of transcription factors (TFs) have been scarcely investigated.

Methods: Renal tissue samples (n = 5) from patients with IgAN and control samples (n = 4) were collected and RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) was performed.

Background: IgA nephropathy (IgAN) is the most common primary glomerulonephritis worldwide. Proliferation-inducing ligand (APRIL) was identified as an important cause of glycosylation deficiency of IgA1 (Gd-IgA1), which can 'trigger' IgAN. Our previous study indicated that high migration group protein B2 (HMGB2) in peripheral blood mononuclear cells from patients with IgAN was associated with disease severity, but the underlying mechanism remains unclear.

Background: Kidney damage is common in patients with Fabry disease (FD), but more accurate information about the risk of progression to kidney failure is needed for clinical decision-making. In particular, FD patients with mild renal involvement often lack timely intervention and treatment. We aimed to utilize a model to predict the risk of renal progression in FD patients.

Renal biopsy remains the gold standard for diagnosing membranous nephropathy (MN). Recent studies have suggested that renal biopsy can be replaced with the serum phospholipase A2 receptor (PLA2R) antibody test for MN diagnosis in patients with nephrotic syndrome. However, this test has not been validated in the Chinese population.

Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is defined as diabetes with impaired renal function, elevated urinary albumin excretion, or both. DKD is one of the most common microvascular complications of diabetes and plays an important role in the cause of end-stage renal disease (ESRD). About 5% of people with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) already have kidney damage at the time they are diagnosed, but other triggers of renal insufficiency, such as obesity, hyperlipidemia, glomerular atherosclerosis are often present, making it difficult to define "diabetic kidney disease" or "diabetic nephropathy" precisely in epidemiology or clinical practice.
