Reactive brilliant red X-3B (RBRX-3B) wastewater is difficult to decolourise, not readily biodegradable, and large in quantity. Therefore, the efficient removal of RBRX-3B is crucial. In this paper, a green and efficient electrochemical-electro-Fenton system with FeO-modified carbon felt bag cathode (ECEF-FeO) was set up to degrade RBRX-3B wastewater.

The degradations of Reactive Brilliant Red X-3B (RBRX-3B) in an electric-assisted microbial system (EAMS), a microbial system (MS) and an electrochemical system (ECS) were compared. The degradation efficiency of RBRX-3B in EAMS (99.8%) was 10.

The high-strength 2,4-DCP, which exists in two states: dissolved and colloidal, was studied by a continuously electro-microbial system (CEMS) and an intermittently electro-microbial system (IEMS). The hydrolysis rate of colloidal 2,4-DCP in the IEMS without electric assistance was much higher than that in the CEMS. However, the degradation rate of the dissolved 2,4-DCP and the dissolved intermediates (2-chlorophenol and 4-chlorophenol) in the IEMS without electric assistance were much lower than that in the CEMS.

The reductive degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) was studied in an electro-biological system, a biological system and an electric catalytic system, respectively. Electrochemical characteristics were monitored by cyclic voltammetry and the intermediate products of 2,4-D degradation were determined by high speed liquid chromatography (HPLC). The results showed that all 2,4-D degradations in the three systems conformed to the kinetics characteristics of one-order reaction, and the degradation kinetics constants were 28.

The effects of sludge retention time (SRT) on extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) content, the characteristics of sludge, the size distribution of sludge particles and the membrane resistance of filtration in the membrane bioreactor were studied. The results indicate that the EPS content is about 90 mg/g in the mixed liquor and 0.8 g/m2 on the membrane surface at 30 d of SRT.
