Adipose tissue macrophages (ATMs) play important roles in maintaining adipose tissue homeostasis and orchestrating metabolic inflammation. Given the extensive functional heterogeneity and phenotypic plasticity of ATMs, identification of the authentically pathogenic ATM subpopulation under obese setting is thus necessitated. Herein, we performed single-nucleus RNA sequencing (snRNA-seq) and unraveled a unique maladaptive ATM subpopulation defined as ATF4PDIA3ACSL4CCL2 inflammatory and metabolically activated macrophages (iMAMs), in which PDIA3 is required for the maintenance of their migratory and pro-inflammatory properties.

Introduction: Insufficient withdrawal duration of antithrombotics leads to excessive bleeding after major surgery. We hypothesize that intraoperative hemoadsorption (HA) can reduce postoperative allogeneic transfusion requirements and excessive bleeding events (EBE), without an increase in ischemic/thromboembolic events (ITE) in patients who have taken antithrombotics and undergone nonelective cardiac surgery.

Methods: A total of 460 patients admitted to our hospital from 2018 to 2022 were included in this study and divided into two groups: HA and non-HA.

Objective: Mesencephalic astrocyte-derived neurotrophic factor (MANF) expressions are dramatically up-regulated in injured brain tissues, thereby conferring neurological protective effects. We intended to determine significance of serum MANF as a prognostic biomarker of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH).

Methods: In this prospective, observational study done from February 2018 to July 2021, 124 patients with new-onset primary supratentorial ICH were consecutively enrolled.

Objective: There is a lack of effective and long-term safe drugs for the treatment of osteoarthritis (OA). Tetrandrine (Tet) has been approved and used to treat rheumatoid arthritis for several decades, but its effect on OA has not been investigated. Herein, we explored the effect of Tet on OA and its underlying mechanism.

Objective: Annexin A7 (ANXA7), a calcium-dependent phospholipid-binding protein, may act to aggravate brain injury. This study aimed to assess the clinical utility of serum ANXA7 as a predictor of severity, early neurological deterioration (END), and prognosis after intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH).

Methods: A total of 126 ICH patients and 126 healthy controls were enrolled.

The aim of this study was assessing the mechanism of nanometric bone pulp activated with double gene as bone morphogenetic protein 1 (BMP-1) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in improving the strength of centrum in osteoporosis (OP). The model of nanometric bone pulp activated with BMP-1 and VEGF double gene was established and validated. Under maximum condition of load and collapsed fragments, the model was analyzed through biomechanical test.

Background: Histidine-tryptophan-ketoglutarate (HTK) and del Nido (DN) cardioplegia are intracellular-type and extracellular-type solution respectively, both can provide a long period of myocardial protection with single-dose infusion, but studies comparing the two are rare for adult cardiac surgery. This study aims to evaluate whether DN is suitable for cardioplegia in complex and high-risk valve surgery with long-term cardiac ischemia when compared with HTK.

Methods: The perioperative records of adult patients infused with DN/HTK as a cardioplegic solution who underwent complex valve surgery with an expected myocardial ischaemic duration longer than 90 min between Oct 2018 and Oct 2019 were analysed retrospectively.

Background: The maternal pain threshold gradually increases during pregnancy, especially in late pregnancy. A series of mechanisms underlying pregnancy-induced analgesia have been reported. However, these mechanisms are still not completely clear, and the underlying molecular mechanisms need further investigation.

Objective: The characteristics of oxaliplatin-induced hypersensitivity reactions (HSRs) in Chinese patients were investigated to provide a reference for patients treated with oxaliplatin.

Methods: The study reviewed the records of patients who developed oxaliplatin-induced HSRs in 17 hospitals from May 2016 to May 2017. We collected and analyzed the basic information, history of oxaliplatin administration and premedication treatments, chemotherapy cycles, HSR symptoms, and the management and outcomes of these patients.

Garden waste is one of the main components of urban solid waste which affects the urban environment. In this study, garden waste of (SS), (BY), (LS), (YS), (GH) and () (CB) was pyrolyzed at 300 °C, 500 °C, 700 °C to obtain different types of biochar, coded as SSB300, SSB500, SSB700, BYB300, etc., which were tested for their Cr (VI) adsorption capacity.

Hong Qu glutinous rice wine (HQ wine) is a traditional alcoholic beverage produced in China by fermenting cooked rice using a fermentation starter prepared with the fungus Monascus purpureus. This starter (Hong Qu, HQ) is made empirically by open spontaneous fermentation that is hard to control and standardize, resulting in inconsistent wine quality. This study investigates representative HQ samples from a large geographic region.

Baicalin is the main active component of Scutellaria baicalensis, widely used in traditional Chinese medicine thanks to its various pharmacological effects, such as anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties, as well as cardiovascular, hepatic, and renal protective effect. Recently, the protective effects of baicalin on liver disease have received much more attention. Several studies showed that baicalin protects against several types of liver diseases including viral hepatitis, fatty liver disease, xenobiotic induced liver injury, cholestatic liver injury, and hepatocellular carcinoma, with a variety of pharmacological mechanisms.

Article Synopsis
  • Scientists studied a new method called autologous platelet-rich plasma pheresis (aPP) to see if it could help patients lose less blood during certain heart surgeries.
  • They looked at the records of 147 adult patients who had complex aortic surgeries and found that those who used aPP needed fewer blood transfusions compared to those who didn't.
  • The aPP method also helped improve lung function a little after surgery, showing it might be a helpful tool in these kinds of surgeries.

Background: Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a serious central nervous system condition with no effective clinal treatment. Recently, transplantation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) derived exosomes has been proposed as a potential treatment for SCI. However, whether exosomes have similar functions as transplanted human placenta-derived MSCs(hPMSCs) has remained unclear.

  • Hong Qu glutinous rice wine (HQGRW) is made from glutinous rice and traditional fermentation starter, but it has high bitterness and umami flavors that many consumers dislike.
  • This study compared the microbial communities and amino acid content in HQGRW made with three types of Hong Qu starters: black Wuyi, red Wuyi, and Gutian, using advanced sequencing technologies and chromatography.
  • Results indicated differences in microbial dynamics among the starters, with certain microbes linked to increased bitter and umami amino acids, providing insights into fermentation processes and how to potentially improve wine flavors.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to investigate how foods with different characteristics (hot or cold) affect cold/hot syndromes and the gut bacteria of mice.
  • - Forty-five male mice were divided into five groups to receive various herbal treatments or rice wine for 28 days, after which changes in their physical appearance, behavior, and biochemical indicators were measured.
  • - Results indicated that cold nature supplements increased certain biochemical markers while decreasing others, showing distinct gut bacterial communities linked to either cold or hot syndromes in the mice.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of using Xing Nao Jing (XNJ) injection as an additional treatment for viral encephalitis (VE) through a systematic review of various clinical trials.
  • A total of 23 trials with 1,757 participants were analyzed, and results indicated that combining XNJ injection with standard treatment might improve cure rates and shorten recovery times for VE patients.
  • However, the quality of evidence was deemed "very low," and while some benefits were observed with XNJ use, the safety data was insufficient to draw strong conclusions.
