Electromagnetic (EM) metamaterials represent a cutting-edge field that achieves anomalously macroscopic properties through artificial design and arrangement of microstructure arrays to freely manipulate EM fields and waves in desired ways. The unit cell of a microstructure array is also called a meta-atom, which can construct effective medium parameters that do not exist in traditional materials or are difficult to realize with traditional technologies. By deep integration with digital information, the meta-atom is evolved to a digital meta-atom, leading to the emergence of information metamaterials.

Boasting superior flexibility in beam manipulation and a simpler framework than traditional phased arrays, terahertz metasurface-based phased arrays show great promise for 5G-A/6G communication networks. Compared with the reflective reconfigurable intelligent surface (reflective RIS), the transmissive RIS (TRIS) offers more feasibility for transceiver multiplexing systems to meet the growing demand for high-performance beam tracking in terahertz communication and radar systems. However, the terahertz TRIS encounters greater challenges in phase shift, beam efficiency, and complex circuitry.

Crystalline membranes, represented by the metal-organic framework (MOF) with well-defined angstrom-sized apertures, have shown great potential for molecular separation. Nevertheless, it remains a challenge to separate small molecules with very similar molecular size differences due to angstrom-scale defects during membrane formation. Herein, a stepwise assembling strategy is reported for constructing MOF membranes with intrinsic angstrom-sized lattice aperture lattice to separate organic azeotropic mixtures separation.

We experimentally demonstrate a dual-polarized, single-input single-output (SISO) photonic-electronic integrated system, achieving a single-wavelength data rate of 400 Gbit/s at 220 GHz. This system is based on a self-developed IQ mixer, orthomode transducers (OMTs), and a dual-polarized multiplexing antenna (DPMA). The IQ mixer front-end exhibits a conversion loss of over 14 dB within a 30 GHz bandwidth, and cross talk between IQ channels is better than 15 dB for most frequency points.

  • Anisotropic metasurfaces allow for independent control of electromagnetic waves with different polarizations, providing new options for communication and imaging systems.
  • The proposed dual-polarization modulation metasurface (DPMM) operates in the terahertz frequency range and can effectively modulate two orthogonally polarized waves using an anisotropic structure combined with GaN-based transistors.
  • Simulation and experiments show that the DPMM achieves high modulation isolation (over 45 dB) and impressive speeds (over 2 GHz for dual polarization), making it a strong candidate for improving data capacity and throughput in THz technologies.

Phosphorus (P), a critical macronutrient for plant growth and reproduction, is primarily acquired and translocated in the form of inorganic phosphate (Pi) by roots. Pi deficiency is widespread in many natural ecosystems, including forest plantations, due to its slow movement and easy fixation in soils. Plants have evolved complex and delicate regulation mechanisms on molecular and physiological levels to cope with Pi deficiency.

  • A study was conducted to investigate how well different types of biochar can absorb perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a harmful PFAS compound, comparing 23 diverse biochars made from materials like sewage sludge and wood waste.
  • The research assessed the biochars' properties such as surface area, pore size, and chemical composition, revealing that sludge-based biochars were significantly more effective at capturing PFOA than wood-based ones.
  • Statistical analysis indicated that the ability to adsorb PFOA was largely determined by the biochars' pore volume and the presence of hydrophobic interactions due to their aromatic carbon content.

α-Methylene-δ-valerolactone (MVL) as a bio-renewable bifunctional monomer has shown great promise to prepare closed-loop recyclable polyester with pendent functionalizable double bond. However, the chemoselective ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of MVL still faces challenges including low polymerization temperature, expensive catalyst as well as high catalyst loading. In this contribution, we present the chemoselective and controlled ROP of MVL using a simple organoaluminum complex [MeAl(BHT)] (BHT=2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenoxy), which can be easily prepared from commercially available trimethylaluminum and 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol without purification.
