Activated sludge enriches vast amounts of micropollutants (MPs) when wastewater is treated, posing potential environmental risks. While standard methods typically focus on target analysis of known compounds, the identity, structure, and concentration of transformation products (TPs) of MPs remain less understood. Here, we employed a novel approach that integrates machine learning for the quantification of nontarget TPs with advanced target, suspect, and nontarget screening strategies.

Breeders adjust wheat heading dates to improve regional adaptability and reduce or mitigate yield losses caused by meteorological disasters, pests and diseases. The Ppd-1 genes play a crucial role in determining wheat sensitivity to changes in day-length and serve as key regulators of heading dates once the vernalization requirement is satisfied. In this study, we identified a new allelic variant of the promoter region, Ppd-B1a.

  • Postmenopausal osteoporosis is a degenerative disease with ineffective existing treatments, prompting the development of a novel nanoparticle (NP) called ALN@BMSCM@PLGA-TK-PEG-SS31.
  • The NP is designed to specifically target bone tissue, evade immune detection, and release a peptide that helps reduce oxidative stress in bone.
  • In mouse studies, this NP significantly improved bone health and reduced side effects, indicating its potential as an effective treatment for osteoporosis.

The pathogens inactivation in wastewater sludges is vitally important for safely managing solid wastes and protecting public and environmental health especially in the emergency. Reports have shown the effectiveness of lime to kill virus pathogens in sludges, but mechanism of virus inactivation and related human diseases is unclear. This study evaluated representative limes of CaO/CaO on actual viral microorganism inactivation by viral metagenomic sequencing technology.

The COVID-19 pandemic has spotlighted the potential of in vitro transcribed (IVT) mRNA vaccines with their demonstrated efficacy, safety, cost-effectiveness, and rapid manufacturing. Numerous IVT mRNA vaccines are now under clinical trials for a range of targets, including infectious diseases, cancers, and genetic disorders. Despite their promise, IVT mRNA vaccines face hurdles such as limited expression levels, nonspecific targeting beyond the liver, rapid degradation, and unintended immune activation.

Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes (BMSC-Exos) are crucial means of intercellular communication and can regulate a range of biological processes by reducing inflammation, decreasing apoptosis and promoting tissue repair. We treated temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disc chondrocytes with TNF-α and performed local injection of sodium iodoacetate (MIA) in the TMJ of rats to establish in vitro and in vivo models of TMJ osteoarthritis (TMJOA). BMSC-Exos were isolated and extracted to evaluate their proliferation and trilineage differentiation abilities, and their antiapoptotic and chondroprotective effects were assessed.

Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) and brain functional connectome (we use 'brain connectome' hereafter for simplicity) have advanced our understanding of the ageing brain and age-related changes in cognitive function. Previous studies have investigated the association among brain connectome and age, global cognition, and memory function separately. However, very few have predicted age, overall cognitive functioning and memory performance in a single study to better understand their complex relationship.

SHP-1, as a protein tyrosine phosphatase, plays a key role in inflammation-related diseases. However, its function and regulatory mechanism in the imbalance of inflammatory response and acute liver injury during sepsis are still unknown. Herein, we constructed a murine model of Escherichia coli (E.

The virtually imaged phased array (VIPA) spectrometer uses the orthogonal dispersion method and has the advantages of compact structure, high spectral resolution, and wide wavelength coverage. It has been widely used in different fields. However, due to the non-linear dispersion of the VIPA etalon and the cross-dispersion structure of the VIPA spectrometer, simple and high-accuracy wavelength calibration remains a challenge.

Article Synopsis
  • Controlled low oxygen levels boost the ability of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) to turn into bone-forming cells and produce calcium nodules, but the specific processes behind this are not well-understood.
  • The study investigates how hypoxia affects BMSCs and highlights the role of FUNDC1, a factor that influences mitochondrial function, particularly during low-oxygen conditions.
  • Findings reveal that FUNDC1 promotes bone formation not through mitophagy but by enhancing mitochondrial fission, which helps stabilize a protein called HIF1α, crucial for BMSC differentiation.

Weeds are undesired plants competing with crops for light, nutrients, and water, negatively impacting crop growth. Identifying weeds in wheat fields accurately is important for precise pesticide spraying and targeted weed control. Grass weeds in their early growth stages look very similar to wheat seedlings, making them difficult to identify.

Limited scientific evidence exists on phosphorus immobilization under autogenetic electrochemical reactions in composting systems. This study exploited a composting procedure using microbial fuel cell (MFC) to ascertain phosphorus redistribution during composting process. Compared to the control without MFC equipment, MFC-assisted treatment yielded a 13 % decrease in phosphorus availability due to the transformation of exchangeable fraction (Ex-P) to aluminum-bound (Al-P) and calcium-bound (Ca-P) fractions.

In clinical settings, addressing large bone defects remains a significant challenge for orthopedic surgeons. The use of genetically modified bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) has emerged as a highly promising approach for these treatments. Signal peptide-CUB-EGF domain-containing protein 3 (SCUBE3) is a multifunctional secreted glycoprotein, the role of which remains unclear in human hBMSCs.

Drought stress strongly restricts the growth, development, and yield of wheat worldwide. Among the various transcription factors (TFs) involved in the wheat drought response, the specific functions of many basic leucine zipper (bZIP) TFs related to drought tolerance are still not well understood. In this study, we focused on the bZIP TF TabZIP156 in wheat.

The preparation of high-performance electro-optical materials is one of the key factors determining the application of optoelectronic communication technology such as 5G communication, radar detection, terahertz, and electro-optic modulators. Organic electro-optic materials have the advantage of a high electro-optic coefficient (~1000 pm/V) and could allow the utilization of photonic devices for the chip-scale integration of electronics and photonics, as compared to inorganic electro-optic materials. However, the application of organic nonlinear optical materials to commercial electro-optic modulators and other fields is also facing technical bottlenecks.
