This work presents a rat optimization algorithm (ROA), which simulates the social behavior of rats and is a new nature-inspired optimization technique. The ROA consists of three operators that simulate rats searching for prey, chasing and fighting prey, and jumping and hunting prey to deal with optimization issues. The Levy flight strategy is introduced into the ROA to keep the algorithm from running into issues with slow convergence and local optimums.

Background: Acute pancreatitis (AP) is a prevalent and serious condition within the digestive system, with approximately 20 % to 30 % of cases advancing to severe acute pancreatitis (SAP). During the initial phases of SAP, macrophages are activated in response to the substantial amounts of acinar cell contents and damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) resulting from acinar cell destruction. Subsequently, activated macrophages release a significant array of pro-inflammatory factors that exacerbate the progression of SAP.

A time-synchronized (TS) convergence control method for robotic manipulators is proposed. Adversely to finite-time control, a notion of time-synchronization convergence is introduced based on the ratio persistence property, which can ensure that all system components converge simultaneously in a finite time. Firstly, a robust disturbance observer is constructed to be compatible with the time-synchronized control framework and precisely estimate system uncertainties.

Recent discoveries of Mott insulating and unconventional superconducting states in twisted bilayer graphene with moiré superlattices have not only reshaped the landscape of 'twistronics' but also sparked the rapidly growing fields of moiré photonic and phononic structures. These innovative moiré structures have opened new routes of exploration for classical wave physics, leading to intriguing phenomena and robust control of electromagnetic and mechanical waves. Drawing inspiration from the success of twisted bilayer graphene, this Perspective describes an overarching framework of the emerging moiré photonic and phononic structures that promise novel classical wave devices.

Golden jackal optimization (GJO) is inspired by mundane characteristics and collaborative hunting behaviour, which mimics foraging, trespassing and encompassing, and capturing prey to refresh a jackal's position. However, the GJO has several limitations, such as a slow convergence rate, low computational accuracy, premature convergence, poor solution efficiency, and weak exploration and exploitation. To enhance the global detection ability and solution accuracy, this paper proposes a novel complex-valued encoding golden jackal optimization (CGJO) to achieve function optimization and engineering design.

Salinization is a severe threat to agriculture and the environment in many areas, and the same in Qaidam Basin, Qinghai Province, Northwestern China. Microorganisms have an important influence on regulating the biochemical cycles of ecosystems; however, systematic research exploring microbial diversity and interactions with saline-soil ecosystems' environmental variables remains scarce. Thus, 16 S rRNA high-throughput sequencing was performed in this paper to characterize microbial diversity under different levels of salinized soils: non-salinized (NS, 2.

Polaritons, hybrid light and matter waves, offer a platform for subwavelength on-chip light manipulation. Recent works on planar refraction and focusing of polaritons all rely on heterogeneous components with different refractive indices. A fundamental question, thus, arises whether it is possible to configure two-dimensional monolithic polariton lenses based on a single medium.

Recently, many topological materials have been discovered as promising electrocatalysts in chemical conversion processes and energy storage. However, it remains unclear how the topological electronic states specifically modulate the catalytic reaction. Here, the two-dimensional metal phthalocyanine-based covalent organic framework (MPc-COF) is studied by ab initio thermodynamic calculations to clearly reveal the promotional effect on the electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) induced by topological gapless bands (TGBs).
