Article Synopsis
  • Acetabular chondrolabral delamination (ACD) is a prevalent hip injury with few effective treatments; this study explored the use of PLGA conical nail fixation as a potential method.
  • The experiment involved 24 pigs with surgically induced ACD, divided into three groups: a control (no treatment), an acute fixation group using PLGA nails, and a chronic fixation group using spacers before PLGA nails.
  • Results indicated that the pigs in the acute fixation group showed significantly better cartilage regeneration and proteoglycan deposition compared to the control and chronic groups, suggesting PLGA nails are effective for treating ACD.

This paper investigates the flow performance and mechanical properties of underground gelled filling materials made from potash mine tailings, using lime as a gel. It demonstrates the feasibility of using lime as a gel, potash mine tailings as aggregate, and replacing water with potash mine tailings to create filling materials that meet design requirements for flow and compressive strength. The role of lime in the hardening process is explored through X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and infrared analysis.

To answer the call for effective and timely intervention in cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), the development of fluorescent probes that can precisely identify atherosclerotic plaques, the root cause of various fatal CVDs, is highly desirable but remains a great challenge. Herein, by integrating bis(trifluoromethyl)benzyl and phenothiazine into the coumarin matrix, a robust fluorescent probe, NOR1, has been developed. NOR1 responds sequentially to lipid droplets (LDs) and HClO via fluorescence turn-on and ratiometric readouts, respectively, with a fast response rate (within 70 s for LDs and 80 s for HClO), excellent sensitivity (detection limit: 0.

Background: Little is known about the association between air pollution and self-perceived health (including both health-related quality of life [HRQoL] and self-rated health [SRH]). The aim of this study was therefore to explore whether long-term air pollution exposure is associated with worse self-perceived health, as measured by different tools.

Methods: We used a land-use regression model to determine the annual average levels of particulate matter with a diameter <10 μm (PM), coarse particles (PM), fine particles (PM), fine particle absorbances (PM), particle number concentration (PNC), ozone (O), nitrogen dioxide (NO), and nitrogen oxide (NO) for geocoded residential addresses (2014-2015).

In subsurface water, humic acid (HA) can react with active chlorine to form carcinogenic compounds, posing ecological issues and health risks. This study aims to create sludge activated carbon (SAC), combine it with Fe, and activate peroxosulfate (PMS) to remove HA from water. To verify the successful modification of SAC, the physicochemical properties were characterized using various methods such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Brunauer Emmett Teller (BET) analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).

Background: Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are the primary choice for antidepressant therapy in cancer patients with depression. Programmed death-1 and programmed cell death-ligand 1 (PD-1/PD-L1) play a critical role in immune checkpoint inhibitors. To date, there have been no studies reporting adverse events (AEs) associated with the real-world use of PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors-SSRIs combination.

The utilization of silicomanganese slag (SMS) for the partial substitution of cement holds significant importance in handling environmental risks and achieving the harmless and resourceful utilization of industrial solid wastes. Nevertheless, an in-depth analysis of the leaching behaviors of heavy metals and the solidification/stabilization mechanisms in SMS and cementitious materials is still lacking. In this study, we adopted the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure and horizontal vibration method to simulate the natural leaching environment, thereby exploring the leaching risks related to heavy metals in the aforementioned materials.

Background: Postoperative femoral head cartilage injury (FHCI) is a rare condition that can be observed in a certain proportion of patients undergoing hip arthroscopy. However, the prevalence and associated factors of FHCI, and the effect of this condition on clinical outcomes still remain unknown.

Patients And Methods: Consecutive patients who were diagnosed with femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS) and labral tear and underwent hip arthroscopic treatment in our institute between July 2020 and July 2021 were retrospectively evaluated.

Objective: To characterize the bile acid metabolomic profiles of umbilical cord blood and meconium in healthy newborns.

Methods: Fifteen healthy newborns, which born in the Obstetrics Department of the Affiliated Hospital of Southwest Medical University between July 1 and August 31, 2023, were selected as study subjects. Umbilical cord blood and meconium samples were collected, and bile acid metabolomics were analyzed using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry.

Effectively promoting skin wound healing remains a significant challenge in the medical field. Although stem cell-derived exosomes show potential in tissue regeneration, their local delivery and sustained release face challenges. To address these issues, we developed a collagen sponge based on type I and recombinant humanized type III collagen.

Multiple solid waste-based amendments are used for arsenic (As)-contaminated soil remediation, but their mechanisms in inhibiting As release and the effects on soil health in real sites remain poorly understood. Here, an amendment consisting of steel slag (SS), coal fly ash (CFA) and Fe(Ⅱ), namely, Fe(Ⅱ) assisted SS and CFA, was applied to an As-contaminated mining soil. 120 days field experimental results revealed that amendment addition in low-As soil (LA soil) and high-As soil (HA soil) significantly increased amorphous Fe(Ⅲ) (hydro)oxides content and decreased dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and thus inhibited As mobilization.

Under the influence of the polarization effect, the background stray light of the weak starlight simulator and the polarization state of the simulated target star point are doped with each other, so it is difficult to achieve accurate suppression of polarized stray light. In this paper, the mechanism of background stray light induced by the optical engine in a weak starlight simulation device is analyzed, and the principle of mutual doping between stray light and simulated target starlight polarization state is studied. The correlation model of polarization parameters, point source transmittal, and simulated target magnitude was established, and the optimization process of polarization effect was constructed to achieve accurate suppression of polarized stray light in the star map background.

To alleviate the impact of atmospheric turbulence on receiver carrier recovery in free-space optical communication, this study introduces a novel frame synchronization and carrier recovery method. This method employs a blend of pseudorandom sequences and specific cyclic quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) training sequences, facilitating frame synchronization and frequency offset (FO) estimation. The research designs a time-series metric curve to counteract the effect of side peaks, enhancing the accuracy of frequency offset estimation via QPSK spectrum features.

Effective intercellular communication is crucial for tissue repair and regeneration, with exosomes playing a key role in mediating these processes by transferring proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids between cells. This study explored the mechanisms underlying the uptake of exosomes derived from human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs), human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs), and human fibroblasts (HFBs). Our findings revealed that hDPSCs exhibited the greatest capacity for exosome uptake across all three cell types.
