While the genetic regulation of nodule formation has been well explored, the molecular mechanisms by which abiotic stresses, such as salt stress, impede nodule formation remain largely elusive. Here, we identify four APETALA2/Ethylene Responsive Factor (AP2/ERF) transcription factors, GmERF13s, that are induced by salt stress and play key roles in salt-repressed nodulation. Loss of GmERF13 function increases nodule density, while its overexpression suppresses nodulation.

Structural differences among non-aqueous phase liquids (NAPLs) result in varying oxidation rates, limiting mass transfer between NAPLs and oxidants and seriously impairing the effectiveness of remediation via traditional in-situ chemical oxidation. To tackle this challenge, a novel approach is proposed for remediating multi-NAPL-polluted groundwater that leverages phase transfer catalysis (PTC) to enhance heterogeneous mass transfer by transferring oxidants from groundwater to NAPLs. Root exudates are known signaling agents that influence legume root nodulation, but the molecular mechanisms for nonflavonoid molecules remain largely unexplored. This study evaluated the roles of two common sources of Fe(III)-minerals-volcanic rock (VR) and synthetic banded iron formations from waste iron tailings (BIF-W)-in vertical flow-constructed wetlands (VFCWs). The evaluation was conducted in the absence of critical environmental factors, including Fe(II), Fe(III), and soil organic matter (SOM), using metagenomic analysis and integrated correlation networks to predict nitrogen removal pathways. Our findings revealed that Fe(III)-minerals enhanced metabolic activities and cellular processes related to carbohydrate decomposition, thereby increasing the average COD removal rates by 10.
