Understanding the nucleation mechanism of peptide self-assembly is fundamental for the design and application of peptide-based materials. To this end, we herein explored the self-assembly processes of three diphenylalanine (FF) derivatives, Boc-XF, Boc-FX, and Boc-FF, where X is p-cyanophenylalanine with the cyano group being an infrared (IR) probe. Using IR probe technique and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), we revealed that the self-assembly of Boc-XF followed a three-step non-classical nucleation mechanism.

Membrane separation has become an indispensable separation technology in social production, playing an important role in drug production, mineral exploitation, water purification, etc. The key core of membranes lies in achieving efficient and precise sieving between substances. As a result, a typical trade-off arises: highly permeable membranes usually sacrifice selectivity and vice versa.

Article Synopsis
  • Several studies highlight that microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) can disrupt microbial communities in marine environments; however, their effects in deep-sea sediments under high pressure are not well understood.
  • The research found that NPs significantly reduced bacterial diversity while MPs had a negligible effect, indicating that NPs influence microbial network complexity more than MPs.
  • The study also revealed that exposure to aged MPs/NPs could either decrease or increase antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) over time, suggesting that the interaction between microbial communities and plastic pollution is complex and varies with exposure duration.

Graphene oxide (GO) is widely used in bone tissue engineering due to its good biocompatibility and proliferation, and is often used in combination with other hydrogels, which not only reduces the cytotoxicity of GO but also improves the mechanical properties of the hydrogels. We developed injectable carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC)/hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC)/β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP)/GO hydrogel hydrogen bonding cross-linked between (CMC) and (HEC), also, calcium cross-linked by β-TCP was also involved to further improvement of mechanical properties of the hydrogel, and incorporate different concentration of GO in these hydrogel systems. The characterization of the novel hydrogel was tested by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR).

Sintering of metal nanocatalysts leading to particle growth and subsequent performance deactivation is a primary issue that hinders their practical applications. While metal-support interaction (MSI) is considered as the critical factor which influences the sintering behavior, the underlying microscopic mechanism and kinetics remain incompletely understood. Here, by using scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and theoretical analysis, we reveal the selection rule of the sintering mechanism for Pt nanoparticles on a two-dimensional (2D) MXene (TiCT ) support, which relies on the surface topology of MXene flakes.

Objectives: To determine the pharmacological impact of hesperidin, the main component of Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, on depressive behavior and elucidate the mechanism by which hesperidin treats depression, focusing on the gut-brain axis.

Methods: Fifty-four Sprague Dawley male rats were randomly allocated to 6 groups using a random number table, including control, model, hesperidin, probiotics, fluoxetine, and Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium groups. Except for the control group, rats in the remaining 5 groups were challenged with chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) for 21 days and housed in single cages.

In order to explore a new mode for the diagnosis of angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (AITL), 31 cases of AITL and 28 cases of peripheral T-cell lymphoma, not otherwise specified (PTCL-NOS) were used as the study subjects. Identifying T follicular helper (TFH) cells with CD4, CD10, Bcl-6, and PD-1, identifying proliferative B cells with CD20 and EZH2, identifying proliferative follicular dendritic cells (FDCs) with CD21 and CD23, and analyzing the value of TFH/B/FDC proliferation and immunolocalization in the diagnosis of AITL. (1) Outside the inherent lymphoid follicles, simultaneous proliferation of TFH/B/FDC (a new diagnostic mode) were observed in AITL [83.

Background: Treatment of acute stroke, before a distinction can be made between ischemic and hemorrhagic types, is challenging. Whether very early blood-pressure control in the ambulance improves outcomes among patients with undifferentiated acute stroke is uncertain.

Methods: We randomly assigned patients with suspected acute stroke that caused a motor deficit and with elevated systolic blood pressure (≥150 mm Hg), who were assessed in the ambulance within 2 hours after the onset of symptoms, to receive immediate treatment to lower the systolic blood pressure (target range, 130 to 140 mm Hg) (intervention group) or usual blood-pressure management (usual-care group).

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are pivotal controllers of gene expression through epigenetic mechanisms, Methylation, a prominent area of study in epigenetics, significantly impacts cellular processes. Various RNA base methylations, including m6A, m5C, m1A, and 2'-O-methylation, profoundly influence lncRNA folding, interactions, and stability, thereby shaping their functionality. LncRNAs and methylation significantly contribute to tumor development, especially in lung cancer.

Membranes are important in the pharmaceutical industry for the separation of antibiotics and salts. However, its widespread adoption has been hindered by limited control of the membrane microstructure (pore architecture and free-volume elements), separation threshold, scalability, and operational stability. In this study, 4,4',4'',4'''-methanetetrayltetrakis(benzene-1,2-diamine) (MTLB) as prepared as a molecular building block for fabricating thin-film composite membranes (TFCMs) via interfacial polymerization.

For large-size potassium accommodation, heterostructure usually suffers severe delamination and exfoliation at the interfaces due to different volume expansion of two-phase during charge/discharge process, resulting in the deconstruction of heterostructures and shortened lifespan of batteries. Here, an innovative strategy is proposed through constructing a microscopic heterostructure system containing copper quantum dots (Cu QDs) highly dispersed in the triphenyl-substituted triazine graphdiyne (TPTG) substrates (TPTG@CuQDs) to solve this problem. The copper quantum dots are uniformly anchored on TPTG substrates, generating a myriad of island-like heterogeneous structures, together with tandem toroidal built-in electric field (BIEF) between every micro heterointerface.

Stimulus-responsive membranes demonstrate promising applications in switchable oil/water emulsion separations. However, they are unsuitable for the treatment of double emulsions like oil-in-water-in-oil (O/W/O) and water-in-oil-in-water (W/O/W) emulsions. For efficient separation of these complicated emulsions, fine control over the wettability, response time, and aperture structure of the membrane is required.
