Background: Rice bean (Vigna umbellata), an underrated legume crop, demonstrates strong adaptability to poor soil fertility and has significant potential to enhance global food security. It is valuable both as a vegetable and fodder crop due to its high protein content, essential fatty acids, and micronutrients. Despite the sequencing of a high-quality genome of rice bean, its mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) sequence has not yet been reported.

Cutaneous wound healing is a complex process involving various cellular and molecular interactions, resulting in the formation of a collagen-rich scar with imperfect function and morphology. Dermal fibroblasts are crucial to successful wound healing, migrating to the wound site where they are activated to provide extracellular matrix remodeling and wound closure. Peripheral nerves have been shown to play an important role in wound healing, with loss or damage to these nerves often leading to impaired healing and the formation of chronic nonhealing wounds.

Solid additives have drawn great attention due to their numerous appealing benefits in enhancing the power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of organic solar cells (OSCs). To date, various strategies have been reported for the selection or design of non-volatile solid additives. However, the lack of a general design/evaluation principles for developing non-volatile solid additives often results in individual solid additives offering only one or two efficiency-boosting attributes.

Septic cardiomyopathy is a secondary myocardial injury caused by sepsis. N6-methyl-adenosine (m6A) modification is involved in the pathological progression of septic cardiomyopathy; however, the pathological mechanism remains unclear. In this study, we identified the overall m6A modification pattern in septic myocardial injury and determined its potential interactions with differentially expressed genes (DEGs).

In the diagnosis of gynecological tumors, determining the benign or malignant nature of adnexal masses is a crucial and complex issue. Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) is a relatively novel and increasingly used diagnostic method. Therefore, this study evaluated the diagnostic value of CEUS in differentiating benign and malignant adnexal masses through meta-analysis and systematic review.

The terminal mining is an essential part of fully mechanized mining, and the reasonable length of the flap roof during the terminal mining is an important basis for the smooth operation of the terminal mining. With the research background of the 213 working face of the Longde Coal Mine, the contribution of this study is the influence law of hydraulic fracturing on the terminal mining mechanical behavior of the working face. Four different numerical calculation models of terminal mining hydraulic fracturing are established, and the optimal hydraulic fracturing site plan is determined according to the length of the terminal mining flap top and the working resistance of hydraulic support.

5-Hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) is an inhibitory neurotransmitter widely distributed in mammalian tissues, exerting its effects through binding to various receptors. It plays a crucial role in the proliferation of granulosa cells (GCs) and the development of follicles in female animals, however, its effect on porcine follicle development is not clear. The aim of this study is to investigate the expression of 5-HT and its receptors in various parts of the pig ovary, as well as the effect of 5-HT on porcine follicular development by using ELISA, quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) and EdU assays.

Spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs) possess the characteristics of self-renewal and differentiation, as well as the ability to generate functional sperm. Their unique stemness has broad applications in male infertility treatment and species preservation. In rodents, research on SSCs has been widely reported, but progress is slow in large livestock such as cattle and pigs due to long growth cycles, difficult proliferation in vitro, and significant species differences.

To obtain high-quality bovine oocytes, the effects of vitamin C (VC) on the IVM of bovine oocytes and early embryo development were investigated. The results showed the following. (1) The IVM medium containing 50 µg/mL VC improved the oocyte maturation rate but did not affect the parthenogenetic embryo development.

G-quadruplex (G4), an unconventional nucleic acid structure, shows polymorphism in its topological morphology. The parallel G4 topology is the most prevalent form in organisms and plays a regulatory role in many biological processes. Designing fluorescent probes with high specificity for parallel G4s is important but challenging.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers created a heart-on-a-chip model to study how SARS-CoV-2 affects heart function, especially in patients with existing heart conditions, using human stem cell-derived heart cells.
  • The study found that COVID-19 caused significant heart damage, worsening when combined with angiotensin II, leading to reduced heart contractions and increased inflammation.
  • Extracellular vesicles from stem cells showed potential to protect heart function by reducing damage and enhancing certain gene activities, with specific microRNAs identified as key factors in this protective effect.

Diabetic cataract (DC) is a major cause of blindness in diabetic patients and it is characterized by early onset and rapid progression. MiR-204-5p was previously identified as one of the top five down-regulated miRNAs in human DC lens tissues. We aimed to determine the expression of miR-204-5p in human lens epithelial cells (HLECs) and explore its effects and mechanisms in regulating the progression of DC.

Semi-artificial Z-scheme systems offer promising potential toward efficient solar-to-chemical conversion, yet sustainable and stable designs are currently lacking. Here, we developed a sustainable hybrid Z-scheme system capable for visible light-driven overall water splitting by integrating the durability of inorganic photocatalysts with the interfacial adhesion and regenerative property of bacterial biofilms. The Z-scheme configuration is fabricated by drop casting a mixture of photocatalysts onto a glass plate, followed by the growth of biofilms for conformal conductive paste through oxidative polymerization of pyrrole molecules.

Bisphenol S (BPS), a typical endocrine-disrupting chemical (EDC), can cause hepatopancreas damage and intestinal flora disturbance. Comprehensive studies on the mechanisms of acute toxicity in crustaceans are lacking. In this study, 16S rRNA and liquid chromatography were used to investigate intestinal microbiota and metabolites of freshwater crayfish (Procambarus clarkii).

Background: Cotton is a major world cash crop and an important source of natural fiber, oil, and protein. Drought stress is becoming a restrictive factor affecting cotton production. To facilitate the development of drought-tolerant cotton varieties, it is necessary to study the molecular mechanism of drought stress response by exploring key drought-resistant genes and related regulatory factors.

Vacancies, as well as their derivatives, usually play a crucial role in many essential properties of materials. However, they always behave erratically, especially under universal thermal vibration, and are therefore difficult to accurately locate. Until now, the lack of an accurate and flexible method for locating and identifying vacancies has hampered the development of relative fields.

Electrochemical reduction of CO and nitrate offers a promising avenue to produce valuable chemicals through the using of greenhouse gas and nitrogen-containing wastewater. However, the generally proposed reaction pathway of concurrent CO and nitrate reduction for urea synthesis requires the catalysts to be both efficient in both CO and nitrate reduction, thus narrowing the selection range of suitable catalysts. Herein, we demonstrate a distinct mechanism in urea synthesis, a tandem NO and CO reduction, in which the surface amino species generated by nitrate reduction play the role to capture free CO and subsequent initiate its activation.

Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is the main cause of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and progresses faster in males than in females. We identify sex-based differences in kidney metabolism and in the blood metabolome of male and female individuals with diabetes. Primary human proximal tubular epithelial cells (PTECs) from healthy males displayed increased mitochondrial respiration, oxidative stress, apoptosis, and greater injury when exposed to high glucose compared with PTECs from healthy females.
