As the population ages, the global burden of cardiometabolic disorders will increase. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of cardiometabolic disorders (diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia) in elderly and to evaluate the effects of various variables including age, sex, education, marital status, smoking, income, physical activity, dementia and depressed mood on untreated cardiometabolic disorders. This was a cross sectional study conducted in Bushehr Elderly Health Program.

Article Synopsis
  • The study systematically reviewed meta-analyses to assess the impact of vitamins C, D, and E on lipid profiles, focusing on their effects in various health conditions.
  • A total of 25 meta-analyses involving over 32,000 participants were included, revealing that vitamin D supplementation significantly improved cholesterol and triglyceride levels in conditions like type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease.
  • While vitamin C showed promise in reducing LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, vitamin E had mixed effects, suggesting that the benefits of antioxidative vitamins for dyslipidemia may vary depending on the specific vitamin and population studied.*

Background: Some pathophysiological effects of physical frailty and cognitive impairment might be similar; therefore, finding the associations in epidemiologic studies could guide clinicians and researchers to recognize effective strategies for each type of frailty such as frailty phenotype and frailty index, which in turn will result in a preventive approach. The study aimed to reveal which components of frailty phenotype are more associated with cognitive impairment. The findings of this study may help other researchers clarify the related pathways.

Article Synopsis
  • - The novel coronavirus outbreak, which started in Wuhan, China, was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization on March 11, 2020, highlighting the need to understand the risk factors affecting the disease's progression.
  • - Older adults (60+) with cardio metabolic risk factors such as obesity, hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia are at greater risk for severe COVID-19 outcomes and increased mortality.
  • - This study reviews literature from the pandemic's onset to analyze how these risk factors influence COVID-19 severity and discusses the cyclical relationship between these conditions and the inflammatory response triggered by the virus.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the relationship between different obesity phenotypes and bone health in an elderly population, focusing on osteoporosis and bone density.
  • Using data from the Bushehr Elderly Health Program, participants were categorized into four obesity groups based on metabolic health status to analyze their risk of osteoporosis and bone quality.
  • Findings indicate that regardless of obesity phenotype, individuals with obesity generally exhibit lower bone quality, revealing the need for further investigation into how metabolic factors influence bone health.

Background: Recent studies have shown that obesity is associated with the severity of coronavirus disease (COVID-19). We reviewed clinical studies to clarify the obesity relationship with COVID-19 severity, comorbidities, and discussing possible mechanisms.

Materials And Methods: The electronic databases, including Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar, were searched and all studies conducted on COVID-19 and obesity were reviewed.

Unlabelled: Cognitive impairment and osteoporosis are frequently seen to coincide in clinical practice. Osteoporosis was higher in elderly populations with cognitive impairment, especially in postmenopausal women. Thus, prophylaxis for osteoporosis, falls, and fractures should be considered as part of the treatment of patients with cognitive impairment.

Introduction: Based on WHO recommendation for considering herbal medicine as an inexpensive appropriate method to treat metabolic disorders, conducting randomized controlled trials (RCTs) is increasing worldwide. Since poor quality RCTs can lead to wrong conclusion, we assessed the quality of reporting of herbal medicines' RCTs conducted in Middle East in a systematic review study.

Materials & Methods: All herbal medicines' RCTs in metabolic disorders (diabetes mellitus, metabolic syndrome, hyperlipidemia, obesity and osteoporosis) conducted in Middle East countries and published before January 2017 were included.
