Objective: To determine the association between food insecurity and HIV infection with depression and anxiety among new tuberculosis (TB) patients.
Design: Our cross-sectional study assessed depression, anxiety and food insecurity with Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), Zung Anxiety Self-Assessment Scale (ZUNG) and Household Food Insecurity Access Scale, respectively. We analyzed 312 drug-resistant genomes of isolates collected from HIV-coinfected and HIV-negative TB patients from nine countries with a high tuberculosis burden. We found that rifampicin-resistant strains isolated from HIV-coinfected patients carried disproportionally more resistance-conferring mutations in that are associated with a low fitness in the absence of the drug, suggesting these low-fitness variants can thrive in the context of reduced host immunity.
