The development of efficient and stable photoanode materials is essential for driving the possible practical application of photoelectrochemical water splitting. This article begins with a basic understanding of the fundamentals of photoelectrochemical devices and photoanodes. State-of-the-art strategies for designing photoanodes with long-term stability are highlighted, including insertion of hole transport layers, construction of protective/passivation layers, loading of co-catalysts, construction of heterojunctions, and modification of the electrolyte.
