Understanding the bonding of gold(I) species has been central to the development of gold(I) catalysis. Herein, we present the synthesis and characterization of the first gold(I)-cyclobutadiene complex, accompanied with bonding analysis by state-of-the-art energy decomposition analysis methods. Analysis of possible coordination modes for the new species not only confirms established characteristics of gold(I) bonding, but also suggests that Pauli repulsion is a key yet hitherto overlooked element.

Pivoting on the chemoselective iridium(I)-catalyzed reductive activation of β,γ-unsaturated δ-lactams, the efficiently produced reactive dienamine intermediates readily undergo [4 + 2] cycloaddition reactions with a wide range of dienophiles, resulting in the formation of bridged bicyclic amine products. This new synthetic approach was extended to aliphatic starting materials, resulting in the efficient formation of cyclohexenamine products, and readily applied as the key step in the shortest (five-step) total synthesis of vinca alkaloid catharanthine to date, proceeding via its elusive biosynthetic precursor, dehydrosecodine.

We develop a short-route (one-pot) synthesis of this class of molecules by reacting thiols with alkenes or alkynes under mild and metal-free conditions. N-Fluorobenzenesulfonimide (NFSI) is used to play dual roles: as a radical initiator for a thiol-ene/-yne reaction to form sulfide adducts, and as efficient oxidant for conversion of the sulfides formed in situ to sulfoxides.
