The Y-box protein (YP) family shares a nucleic acid binding domain, called cold-shock domain, that has been evolutionarily highly conserved from bacteria to human. The different YPs identified so far in vertebrates are thought to function as transcriptional activators, transcriptional repressors and/or translational repressors. Medakafish and pufferfish are very suitable vertebrate models for the study of developmental genetics and comparative genomics, respectively.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzed 21 Caucasian women with PCOS, focusing on their hormonal levels before and after an ACTH test, and genetic screening for common mutations in the CYP21 gene.
  • The researchers identified 5 mutations in 4 participants (19%) and correlated higher levels of certain hormones after ACTH administration, indicating potential deficiencies in hormonal pathways.
  • They also suggested a possible link between prenatal DDT exposure and the increased prevalence of PCOS in women born after 1955, attributing part of this rise to environmental factors rather than solely genetic mutations.
