Article Synopsis
  • Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) affects the central nervous system, leading to serious neurological issues, and the role of brain pericytes in TBEV infection is not fully understood.
  • The study analyzed primary human brain pericytes infected with highly virulent Hypr and mildly virulent Neudoerfl strains, finding that both strains showed similar replication rates and peaks of viral RNA.
  • Results indicated that only a small percentage of pericytes were infected, without visible damage, but they produced significant chemokines like IL-6, IP-10, RANTES, and MCP-1, highlighting their role in immune responses during TBEV infection.

Susac syndrome is a rare and enigmatic complex neurological disorder primarily affecting small blood vessels in the brain, retina, and inner ear. Diagnosing Susac syndrome may be extremely challenging not only due to its rarity, but also due to the variability of its clinical presentation. This paper describes two vastly different cases-one with mild symptoms and good response to therapy, the other with severe, complicated course, relapses and long-term sequelae despite multiple therapeutic interventions.

Article Synopsis
  • Animal welfare is becoming increasingly important for the well-being of research animals and the quality of scientific data, highlighting the need for better education in this area.
  • Previous studies mostly focused on animal welfare education in veterinary and farm animal contexts, prompting this study to assess animal welfare courses for ecologists and wildlife professionals.
  • Out of 1548 universities evaluated, only 1% offered a formal animal welfare course, with many related courses being elective rather than mandatory, indicating a gap in educational preparedness for wildlife-related careers.

Objectives: X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy (X-ALD) causes cerebral adrenoleukodystrophy (cALD), myelopathy and/or adrenal insufficiency in males, and myelopathy/peripheral neuropathy in females. These distinct phenotypes are scarcely linked to a specific mutations. The objective herein was to find a link between the phenotype with the genotype mutation, serum very long-chain fatty acids (VLCFA), and the diet with Lorenzo´s and GTO oils in hemizygous males and heterozygous females.

Background/aim: Immunotherapy with checkpoint inhibitors is currently considered a cornerstone of metastatic renal clear cell cancer (mRCC) therapy. Despite the general improvement in the survival of patients with mRCC, there are some clinical situations that have not been specifically evaluated in clinical trials, such as the use of everolimus before nivolumab.

Patients And Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis evaluating the efficacy of nivolumab in the real-world setting, including a subset of patients with previous mTOR inhibitor therapy.

Aim: Extremely low birthweight (ELBW) neonates require a high protein intake, but this can be challenging in the very rare cases when they also have phenylketonuria (PKU). This is due to a lack of suitable parenteral nutrition or enteral formula. Our aim was to analyse tolerance to phenylalanine in these infants.

Animals have been considered an indispensable tool to teach about the functioning of living organisms, to obtain skills necessary for practicing human and veterinary medicine, as well as for acquiring skills for caring for and conducting experiments on animals in laboratories. However, the efficacy of this practice has been questioned in recent decades, and societal views have evolved to place a much stronger emphasis on animal welfare and ethics that needs to be reflected in our teaching and training practices. Currently, many alternatives to harmful animal use are available, and it is not clear why thousands of animals continue to be used every year for educational and training purposes.
