Melanoma is a significant cause of cancer death, despite being detectable without specialized or invasive technologies. Understanding barriers to preventive behaviors such as skin self-examination (SSE) could help to define interventions for increasing the frequency of early detection. The inclusion of undergraduate near-peer mentors had a universal benefit when implemented across in-person and virtual training programs of one- and ten-week durations. Benefits are described for four stakeholder groups: the high school trainees, program staff, scientist partners, and peer mentors themselves.

Hubs have developed services across different domains, such as informatics and pilot studies, to provide expertise and staffing for local research teams.

Derived from an open-source taxonomy for determining authorship credit, the CREDIT URE defines 14 possible roles, allowing students and their research mentors to rate the degree to which students participate in each role. The tool was administered longitudinally across three cohorts of undergraduate student-mentor pairs involved in a biomedical research training program for students from diverse backgrounds.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the patterns of PPE use and the impact of PPE availability on the attitudes and well-being of an international population of healthcare workers.
Methods: This was an online, cross-sectional survey of healthcare workers.
Physical activity can help mitigate the long-term symptoms and side effects of cancer and its treatment, but most cancer survivors are not active enough to achieve these benefits. An evidence-based strategy to promote physical activity among adults is a community group-based walking program. However, many evidence-based programs do not achieve intended population health outcomes because of the challenges of real-world implementation.

Preliminary mechanistic experiments suggest that nitrous oxide functions in a similar manner to the -oxide promoters typically employed in Pauson-Khand reactions. Only dinitrogen and carbon dioxide are produced as a consequence of the activation mechanism, thus avoiding high molecular weight reagents and the build up of basic byproducts.

Methods: We used curated local and national data to develop a workforce dashboard.
Study Objective: We assess the productivity, outcomes, and experiences of participants in the National Institutes of Health/National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute-funded K12 institutional research training programs in emergency care research.
Methods: We used a mixed-methods study design to evaluate the 6 K12 programs, including 2 surveys, participant interviews, scholar publications, grant submissions, and funded grants. The training program lasted from July 1, 2011, through June 30, 2017.
Background And Purpose: As part of the NIH BUILD initiative to diversify the scientific workforce, the EXITO project is a large multi-institutional effort to provide comprehensive support and training for undergraduates from traditionally underrepresented student populations who aspire to health-related research careers. Portland State University, a major public urban university that prioritizes student access and opportunity, and Oregon Health & Science University, a research-intensive academic health center, lead the EXITO network comprised of eleven 2-year and 4-year institutions of higher education spanning Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Hawaii, Guam, American Samoa, and the Northern Mariana Islands. The EXITO project aims for impact in biomedical research by training diverse scholars from indigenous and underserved communities affected by adverse health disparities.

In mice, the tumor promoter phenobarbital (PB) selects for hepatocellular tumors with activating β-catenin mutations via constitutive androstane receptor activation. PB-dependent tumor promotion was studied in mice with genetic inactivation of Apc, a negative regulator of β-catenin, to circumvent the problem of randomly induced mutations by chemical initiators and to allow monitoring of PB- and Wnt/β-catenin-dependent tumorigenesis in the absence of unknown genomic alterations.

To address the question whether a common mechanism is involved we treated human primary hepatocytes with IL-6, the major mediator of the acute phase response in liver, and characterized acute phase and detoxification responses in quantitative gene expression and (phospho-)proteomics data sets. Selective inhibitors were used to disentangle the roles of JAK/STAT, MAPK, and PI3K signaling pathways.

Studies that examine differences in intestinal microbial communities across individuals with and without enteric infections are useful for identifying microbes that support or impede intestinal health.
Results: 16S rRNA gene sequencing was conducted on stool DNA from patients with enteric infections (n = 200) and 75 healthy family members to identify differences in intestinal community composition.
Many environmental pollutants and drugs, including steroid hormones, hypolipidemics and antiepileptics, are non-genotoxic carcinogens (NGC) in rodent liver. The mechanism of action and the risk for human health are still insufficiently known. Here, we study the effects of phenobarbital (PB), a widely used model NGC, on hepatic epithelial-mesenchymal crosstalk and the impact on hepatic apoptosis.
