Purpose: To describe a case of bilateral large iris pigment epithelial (IPE) cysts causing corneal endothelial dysfunction that was successfully managed with a surgical cyst excision combined with Descemet stripping only (DSO) procedure followed by postoperative rho kinase inhibitor (ROCK-I) administration.

Methods: Case report.

Results: A 27-year-old woman presented with bilateral large IPE cysts adhering to the corneal endothelium, causing endothelial dysfunction with overlying corneal edema.

Background: Uveal melanoma (UM) is the most common primary intraocular malignancy in adults. The median overall survival time for patients who develop metastasis is approximately one year. In this study, we aim to leverage deep learning (DL) techniques to analyze digital cytopathology images and directly predict the 48 month survival status on a patient level.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined midzonal iris pigment epithelial (IPE) cysts, which are usually harmless but can be confused with ciliary body melanoma, to better understand their characteristics using ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM).
  • Researchers reviewed 69 patient charts, finding that cysts were most common in older adults (median age 66), with a slight female majority and various cyst sizes, often located inferotemporally in the eye.
  • UBM revealed that many cases thought to have multiple cysts were actually single cysts with distinct shapes, and associated peripheral IPE cysts were found in a majority of the evaluated eyes.

Introduction: A retrospective review of patients treated for retinoblastoma who developed a non-pineoblastoma second primary malignant neoplasm (SPMN) was performed.

Methods: The demographics, clinical features and treatments for retinoblastoma, pathologic types of non-pineoblastoma second primary malignant neoplasm (SPMN), intervals between the retinoblastoma diagnosis and treatment and diagnosis of non-pineoblastoma SPMN, treatment provided for the SPMN, and the survival outcomes of the patients were evaluated.

Results: Of 550 patients treated initially for retinoblastoma, this series used the 15 (2.

Background And Objective: Retinal gliovascular proliferation (RGVP) is a benign lesion of the retina that can arise idiopathically or secondary to another disease entity. This study describes the clinical features, treatment, and outcomes of six patients with secondary RGVP associated with irradiated, regressed retinoblastoma, and distinguishes it from late local relapse of retinoblastoma.

Patients And Methods: In a retrospective review of available clinical records of 550 patients evaluated for retinoblastoma in a single ocular oncology practice between 1975 and 2022, seven eyes of six patients were identified as having secondary RGVP overlying a treated and regressed retinoblastoma.

PURPOSEValidated and accurate prognostic testing is critical for precision medicine in uveal melanoma (UM). Our aims were to (1) prospectively validate an integrated prognostic classifier combining a 15-gene expression profile (15-GEP) and RNA expression and (2) identify clinical variables that enhance the prognostic accuracy of the 15-GEP/ classifier.MATERIALS AND METHODSThis study included 1,577 patients with UM of the choroid and/or ciliary body who were enrolled in the Collaborative Ocular Oncology Group Study Number 2 (COOG2) and prospectively monitored across 26 North American centers.

A 4-month-old girl was referred for evaluation of an anterior chamber cyst in the left eye. Examination under anesthesia (EUA) revealed a large iris stromal cyst in the anterior chamber involving the angle and the pupillary border, with touch of the corneal endothelium and anterior lens capsule. Intraocular pressure was normal.

PRAME is a CUL2 ubiquitin ligase subunit that is normally expressed in the testis but becomes aberrantly overexpressed in many cancer types in association with aneuploidy and metastasis. Here, we show that PRAME is expressed predominantly in spermatogonia around the time of meiotic crossing-over in coordination with genes mediating DNA double strand break repair. Expression of PRAME in somatic cells upregulates pathways involved in meiosis, chromosome segregation and DNA repair, and it leads to increased DNA double strand breaks, telomere dysfunction and aneuploidy in neoplastic and non-neoplastic cells.

Introduction: Iodine-125 brachytherapy is an effective eye-sparing treatment for uveal melanoma. Previous work has shown that uveal melanomas cluster into distinct molecular classes based on gene expression profiles - discriminating low-grade from high-grade tumors. Our objective was to identify clinical and molecular predictors of local recurrence (LR) and progression-free survival (PFS).

Purpose Of Review: The aim of this article is to provide an update on the latest applications of deep learning (DL) and classical machine learning (ML) techniques to the detection and prognostication of intraocular and ocular surface malignancies.

Recent Findings: Most recent studies focused on using DL and classical ML techniques for prognostication purposes in patients with uveal melanoma (UM).

Summary: DL has emerged as the leading ML technique for prognostication in ocular oncological conditions, particularly in UM.

Purpose: To report a case of acute onset unilateral hemorrhagic and serous choroidal effusion associated with dorzolamide administration and antiplatelet use that recurred in a patient who experienced a dorzolamide-induced choroidal effusion ten years prior to presentation.

Observations: A 78-year-old male with a history of POAG in both eyes presented with sudden onset decreased vision and flashes of light in the left eye two days after escalating from timolol maleate 0.5% twice daily in both eyes to fixed combination dorzolamide-timolol 22.

Introduction: Iodine-125 loaded Collaborative Ocular Melanoma Study plaques can achieve excellent tumor control for patients diagnosed with uveal melanomas. Our ocular cancer team hypothesized that use of novel, partially loaded COMS plaques could ease and improve accurate plaque placement during treatment of small, posterior tumors while providing equivalent tumor control.

Materials/methods: Records of 25 patients treated with custom plaques were compared to 20 patients treated with fully loaded plaques, who had received treatment prior to our institution's adopting the use of these partial plaques.

Purpose: To report the clinical findings, treatments, and outcomes in a series of patients with vitreous metastasis from cutaneous melanoma.

Methods: This single-center, retrospective, interventional case series included patients with biopsy-confirmed vitreous metastasis from cutaneous melanoma diagnosed between 1997 and 2020. Standard 23- or 25-gauge pars plana vitrectomy was performed for diagnostic sampling.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine whether the metastatic rates in patients with gene expression profile (GEP) class 1A versus 1B posterior uveal malignant melanoma supported or contradicted predictions of very low metastatic rate in GEP 1A cases and moderate rate in GEP 1B cases.

Patients/methods: 164 patients with a cytopathologically confirmed primary posterior uveal malignant melanoma classified by GEP testing as class 1 (100 GEP 1A, 64 GEP 1B) were evaluated. Kaplan-Meier rates of metastasis were computed and plotted for the GEP class 1 subgroups.

Objective: To demonstrate that deep learning (DL) methods can produce robust prediction of gene expression profile (GEP) in uveal melanoma (UM) based on digital cytopathology images.

Design: Evaluation of a diagnostic test or technology.

Subjects Participants And Controls: Deidentified smeared cytology slides stained with hematoxylin and eosin obtained from a fine needle aspirated from UM.

Article Synopsis
  • * A study reviewed the outcomes of 49 eyes from 43 patients treated with IAC between 2008 and 2019, identifying factors influencing ocular survival through statistical analysis.
  • * Results indicated improved ocular survival rates over the years, suggesting that increased treatment experience and changes in therapeutic approaches may enhance outcomes; further research is needed for deeper insights.

Retinoblastoma is the most common eye cancer in children and is fatal if left untreated. Over the past three decades, chemotherapy has become the mainstay of eye-sparing treatment. Nevertheless, chemoresistance continues to represent a major challenge leading to ocular and systemic toxicity, vision loss, and treatment failure.
