Prognosis of patients with myocardial infarction is detrimentally affected by comorbidities like diabetes mellitus. In the experimental setting, not only diabetes mellitus but also acute hyperglycemia is shown to hamper cardioprotective properties by multiple pharmacological agents. For Levosimendan-induced postconditioning, a strong infarct size reducing effect is demonstrated in healthy myocardium.

Methods: The study population included 2898 consecutive patients presenting with AF to the emergency department of the Department of Cardiology, Heidelberg University Hospital.
A 55-year-old male patient under permanent testosterone therapy for hypogonadism presented with abdominal pain and increased blood pressure values. In the physical examination a plethora was noted and laboratory examinations revealed polyglobulia. In the subsequent diagnostic process polycythemia vera and cancer could be excluded as the cause.
