Article Synopsis
  • Healthcare-associated methicillin-resistant infections (MRSA) have high rates of illness and death globally, prompting research on potential treatments.
  • This study examined the synergistic effects of Epigalocatenin-3-gallate (EGCG) combined with various antibiotics on different resistant bacterial strains isolated from patients in a Lisbon hospital.
  • Results indicated that EGCG exposure significantly impacted the expression of genes related to drug resistance and epigenetics, suggesting its potential as a novel antimicrobial agent or supportive treatment against antibiotic-resistant infections.

Antimicrobial resistance of human pathogens, such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, is described by the World Health Organization as a health global challenge and efforts must be made for the discovery of new effective and safe compounds. This work aims to evaluate epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) epigenetic and modulatory drug potential against S. aureus in vitro and in vivo.

Objective: To compare medical students' global itemized ratings (GIR) and real-case structured clinical assessment (RC-SCA), generated by faculty members from three different specialties (Gynecology-O&G, Internal Medicine-IM, Pediatrics-Ped).

Method: 106 Y4 learners were assessed by one faculty member from each specialty, who filled in GIR, consisting of 6 technical domains (mean score GIRt) and 7 humanistic domains (mean score GIRh), on a 0-10 scale, and resultant RC-SCA, from direct attendance observation. Statistical analyses used Cronbach coefficient, Friedman and Wilcoxon paired tests, Pearson and Spearman correlation coefficients, Euclidean distances.

Context: Single-item global overall ratings are often used as a method of assessing learners' clinical competence at the end of a clerkship. The purpose of this study was to identify which aspects of clinical competence are assessed through these ratings.

Methods: At the end of a clinical clerkship in primary health units, 106 Year 4 students are routinely assessed by faculty staff of three disciplines (obstetrics and gynaecology, internal medicine, paediatrics), using a single global numeric rating (on a scale of 0-10).

Background: The Program for the Promotion of Changes in Medical School Curricula (PROMED) was developed by the Brazilian Ministries of Health and Education. The objective of this program was to finance the implementation of changes to the curricula of medical schools directed towards the Brazilian national healthcare system (SUS). This paper reports research carried out together with the coordinators responsible for the PROMED of each medical school approved, in which interviews were used to evaluate whether this financial support succeeded in stimulating changes.

Goal: To compare the spectrum of clinical encounters experienced by medical students at the primary level of care in six urban public health units, and to determine the extent to which these educational experiences were sufficient to meet learning objectives proposed for a teaching module.

Method: During the 4th year of a new six- year curriculum, 113 students cared for adults, the elderly, women and children. They were supervised by faculty and trained supervisors during three 4-hours periods a week, every other week, from January to October at six primary health units.

Background And Purpose: Although chest physiotherapy techniques are commonly used in the treatment of respiratory diseases, there are, however, few studies in the literature on the effectiveness of these techniques in paediatric patients. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effect of the expiratory flow increase technique (EFIT) on the pulmonary function of infants on invasive mechanical pulmonary ventilation.

Method: A prospective, non-randomized study design was used, with consecutive enrolment conducted in the paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) of a university hospital.

We sequenced the complete S segments of hantaviruses detected from 12 HPS patients living in southern of Brazil. Samples were obtained from patients diagnosed in different years, in distinct areas, and with a broad spectrum of clinical signs. Despite these differences, all the S proteins of hantavirus from Paraná were identical, except for one amino acid substitution.

Objective: To present concepts related to growth assessment, with emphasis on aspects concerning the evaluation of individuals.

Sources: The present paper is based on reports published by the WHO regarding the use anthropometry for the assessment of nutritional status; on original articles; and on book chapters about the same topic, as well as on the criticisms of auxologists of this type of assessment when employed at the individual level.

Summary Of The Findings: Concepts concerning reference, skeletal maturity, mid-parental target height, z score, short stature, growth rate, body mass index, and their assumptions and limitations are presented.
