This study investigated immunological changes during an alcohol hangover, and the possible difference between hangover-resistant and hangover-sensitive drinkers in terms of immune reactivity. Using a semi-naturalistic design, N = 36 healthy social drinkers (18 to 30 years old) provided saliva samples on a control day (after drinking no alcohol) and on a post-alcohol day. Hangover severity was rated directly after saliva collection.

Background: A number of social drinkers claim that they do not experience next-day hangovers despite consuming large quantities of alcohol. Background: Transilluminated powered phlebectomy (TIPP) is a minimal invasive method of varicose vein surgery that is often performed with spinal or general anaesthesia following the removal of the greater saphenous vein (GSV). Substance identification: the weak link in analytical toxicology.

Although substance identification is a key factor in analytical toxicology, it is amazing that the subject is receiving very limited and often inappropriate attention. With regard to the latter, a "confirmation" approach is usually chosen, which does not yield unambiguous identification. Solid-phase extraction (SPE) was directly coupled to mass spectrometry (MS) to assess the feasibility of the system for the rapid determination of prednisolone in serum. Aim: The aim of the current retrospective study was to assess the influence of polymorphic drug metabolism as assessed by genotyping, on the on the utilisation of psychotropic drugs in hospitalised psychiatric patients. Ion suppression effects were observed during the determination of clenbuterol in urine with solid-phase extraction/multiple-stage ion-trap mass spectrometry (SPE/MS(3)), despite the use of atmospheric pressure chemical ionisation. During SPE, a polymeric stationary phase (polydivinylbenzene) was applied. Post-cartridge infusion of analyte to the SPE eluate after the extraction of blank urine was performed to obtain a profile of the suppression.

Spherical molecularly imprinted polymer particles obtained via precipitation polymerization, were introduced as a pseudostationary phase in capillary electrophoresis (CE) to study molecular recognition. Analyses were performed via a partial filling technique using (+)-ephedrine-imprinted microspheres (100-200 nm) which were polymerized from methacrylic acid and 1,1,1-Tris(hydroxymethyl)propanetrimethacrylate using acetonitrile as the solvent. To determine sub-ppb levels of drugs in biological samples, selective, sensitive and rapid analytical techniques are required. This work shows the possibilities for high-throughput analysis of solid-phase microextraction (SPME) directly coupled to an ion-trap mass spectrometer equipped with an atmospheric pressure chemical ionisation source. As no chromatographic separation is performed, the SPME procedure is the time-limiting step.
