Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to determine if cortisol samples taken 30 and 60 minutes after administering synacthen are necessary for diagnosing adrenal insufficiency (AI) in patients.
  • A total of 393 short synacthen tests (SSTs) were reviewed, measuring cortisol levels to assess adrenal reserve, with a cutoff of 420 nmol/L indicating a normal response.
  • Results showed that 79.6% of subjects had adequate cortisol levels at both 30 and 60 minutes while about 5% had insufficient levels at 30 minutes but achieved adequate levels by 60 minutes, suggesting some may be misdiagnosed with AI.
