This study assessed the mechanical characteristics, biocompatibility and osteoconductive properties of an equine hydroxyapatite collagen (eHAC) bone block when applied as a bone substitute for lateral augmentation of rat mandible. 96 rats underwent lateral augmentation of the mandible, using two substitute bone blocks (eHAC or Bio-Oss spongiosa) or autologous bone grafts. Signs of inflammation, amount of bone formation and ingrowth of bone into the bone blocks were assessed at 1 and 3 months.

A 26-year-old woman was referred by a dentist to an oral and maxillofacial surgeon after an unsuccessful attempt to remove a mandibular third molar. A panoramic radiograph showed the remaining root of the third molar and the patient suffered from insensitivity of the lower lip. The root of the third molar was removed surgically.

A soft tissue injury can lead to the formation of a pseudocyst in the subcutaneous adipose tissue, due to a seroma, haematoma or fat necrosis. These cysts were first described in 1853 by the French physician Morel-Lavallée. He observed the phenomenon in the lower limb in women after a tangential trauma with separation of the fatty layers.
