Background: Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infection of the central nervous system (CNS) is a rare but life threatening condition which may follow hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Diagnosis, monitoring and treatment approaches rely on anecdotal reports.
Case Presentations: The different outcomes of HCMV CNS disease in an adult and a pediatric T-cell depleted hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) recipient are reported.
Background: Chromosome changes in the bone marrow (BM) of patients with persistent cytopenia are often considered diagnostic for a myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). Comprehensive cytogenetic evaluations may give evidence of the real pathogenetic role of these changes in cases with cytopenia without morphological signs of MDS.
Results: Chromosome anomalies were found in the BM of three patients, without any morphological evidence of MDS: 1) an acquired complex rearrangement of chromosome 21 in a boy with severe aplastic anaemia (SAA); the rearrangement caused the loss of exons 2-8 of the RUNX1 gene with subsequent hypoexpression.
The emerging role of humoral immunity in the pathogenesis of chronic allograft damage has prompted research aimed at assessing the role of anti-HLA antibody (Ab) monitoring as a tool to predict allograft outcome. Data on the natural history of allografts in children developing de novo Ab after transplantation are limited. Using a cut-off of 30,000 HCMV DNA copies/ml blood for pre-emptive therapy and cut-offs of 1 and 3 virus-specific CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cells/µl blood for T-cell protection, we conducted in 131 young patients a prospective 3-year study aimed at verifying whether achievement of such immunological cut-offs protects from HCMV disease. In the first three months after transplantation, 55/89 (62%) HCMV-seropositive patients had infection and 36/55 (65%) were treated pre-emptively, whereas only 7/42 (17%) HCMV-seronegative patients developed infection and 3/7 (43%) were treated.

The first resin (HGT) is the direct product of the hypercross-linking reaction, whereas the second one (HGS) is the sulphonated analogue of HGT obtained by exchanging approximately 3 wt % of the chloromethyl groups with sulphonic groups. HGT and HGS absorb both polar and apolar solvents in the permanent nanoporosity created by the hypercross-linking, and NMR data highlight that the pore size is not affected by the different properties of the investigated liquid media.

This paper presents the preliminary performance evaluation of our new wireless ultra-miniaturized inertial measurement unit (IMU) WB-4 by compared with the Vicon motion capture system. The WB-4 IMU primarily contains a mother board for motion sensing, a Bluetooth module for wireless data transmission with PC, and a Li-Polymer battery for power supply. The mother board is provided with a microcontroller and 9-axis inertial sensors (miniaturized MEMS accelerometer, gyroscope and magnetometer) to measure orientation.

The training in the surgical practice is of paramount importance to prepare the residents in performing surgical procedures on human subject and to provide exercise on new techniques for experienced surgeons. Usually, these trainings are carried out on live animals or in virtual environments and dry boxes; the complexity of the exercises is identical in both of the case, but the pressure in operating with a living subject could change the attitude and the movements of the trainee. Until now, it has not been possible to analyze this stress in details together in the surgical animal training and dry boxes.
