Article Synopsis
  • The study compared maternal measles antibody levels in infants born to mothers who were infected with the wild measles virus versus those vaccinated against it.
  • Only a small percentage (12.7%) of infants had detectable measles antibodies using enzyme tests, but all infants showed them when using a more sensitive test; however, only half of the infants from infected mothers had protective levels.
  • The findings suggest that immunity acquired from infected mothers lasts longer, and recommend starting measles vaccinations at 9 months during epidemics instead of the current schedule.
