Biliary drainage is then one of the necessary procedures to help patients suffering from icterus to reduce serum bilirubin levels and relieve symptoms. The aim of this study was identifying risk factors for survival in patients with cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) treated with percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage (PTBD) and to develop a simple scoring system predicting survival from PTBD insertion. This single-centre retrospective study included 175 consecutive patients undergoing PTBD for extrahepatic CCA (perihilar and distal).

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effects of TACE treatment on microRNA levels and VEGF in HCC patients, comparing two types of particles: degradable (DSM) and nondegradable (DEB).
  • It included 52 patients, measuring biomarker concentrations at different time points before and after TACE to assess treatment responses at six and twelve months.
  • Results showed that while both particle types raised microRNA levels post-TACE, only miR-34a’s immediate increase correlated with better outcomes, suggesting it could be a useful biomarker for predicting patient prognosis.

Article Synopsis
  • Next-generation sequencing techniques, like whole-exome and error-corrected sequencing, are used to analyze mutation patterns in both cancerous and non-cancerous tissues.
  • The review emphasizes the potential of using these techniques on archived tissue samples fixed in formalin or alcohol to identify mutational signatures that reflect prior exposure to mutagens.
  • By distinguishing between DNA damage from tissue fixation and true biological mutations, this research helps improve our understanding of cancer causes and supports prevention strategies aimed at reducing exposure to cancer risk agents.

Article Synopsis
  • - Tobacco use is linked to various cancers and causes about 25% of cancer-related deaths, primarily due to harmful substances in tobacco smoke, including tobacco-specific nitrosamines like NNN and NNK that create damaging DNA adducts.
  • - The study identified new mutational patterns induced by these DNA adducts, particularly in certain cancer cell lines and rat tumors, indicating specific mutations that occur in the DNA from exposure to these harmful compounds.
  • - Analyzing 2,780 cancer genomes revealed that these mutational patterns were present in around 180 tumors from types of cancer not typically associated with smoking, suggesting that the damage caused by the POB pathway could play a unique role in various cancers, including hematological

Article Synopsis
  • The incidence of tongue cancer in young patients is increasing and lacks identified risk factors or molecular markers, indicating it's not yet classified as a separate cancer type.
  • The analysis of head and neck cancer data revealed mutational patterns that helped differentiate between oral cancers and laryngeal cancers based on clinical characteristics.
  • Findings showed that NIRF oral cancers have heightened mutational activities related to internal biological clocks, specific gene mutations, and reactions to microbial influences, suggesting their development may be linked to increased internal mutagenesis due to these factors.

Background And Objectives: Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) is an inherited disease associated with pathogenic variants in transforming growth factor-β signaling pathway-related genes, resulting in abnormal vascular development in various organs. Brain arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) may lead to intracranial hemorrhage, and brain abscess or ischemic stroke may result from right to left shunting via pulmonary AVMs. We aimed to investigate the risk for these severe complications in both adults and children with HHT.

Bioluminescence imaging (BLI) of gene expression in live animals is a powerful method for monitoring development, tumor growth, infections, healing, and other progressive, long-term biological processes. BLI remains an effective approach for reducing the number of animals needed to monitor dynamic changes in gene activity because images can be captured repeatedly from the same animals. When examining these ongoing changes, it is sometimes necessary to remove rhythmic effects on the bioluminescence signal caused by the circadian clock's daily modulation of gene expression.

Background: Mycotoxins have been suggested to contribute to a spectrum of adverse health effects in humans, including at low concentrations. The recognition of these food contaminants being carcinogenic, as co-occurring rather than as singularly present, has emerged from recent research. The aim of this study was to assess the potential associations of single and multiple mycotoxin exposures with renal cell carcinoma risk in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) cohort.

Aristolochic acids (AAs) are a group of naturally occurring compounds present in many plant species of the Aristolochiaceae family. Exposure to AA is a significant risk factor for severe nephropathy, and urological and hepatobiliary cancers (among others) that are often recurrent and characterized by the prominent mutational fingerprint of AA. However, herbal medicinal products that contain AA continue to be manufactured and marketed worldwide with inadequate regulation, and possible environmental exposure routes receive little attention.

Background: Systematic evaluation of literature data on the cancer hazards of human exposures is an essential process underlying cancer prevention strategies. The scope and volume of evidence for suspected carcinogens can range from very few to thousands of publications, requiring a complex, systematically planned, and critical procedure to nominate, prioritize and evaluate carcinogenic agents. To aid in this process, database fusion, cheminformatics and text mining techniques can be combined into an integrated approach to inform agent prioritization, selection, and grouping.
