Precise genetic parameter estimates can allow the breeding value evaluation to be adjusted to meet European requirements and to enable participation in the international evaluation of Simmental bulls conducted by Interbull. Genetic parameters were estimated for a multitrait multilactation random regression test-day model for milk in Simmental cattle in Poland. Data came from the official Polish national recording system.

Estimation of Genetic Parameters for Female Fertility Traits in the Polish Holstein-Friesian Population.

The objective of this study was to estimate genetic parameters for the analyzed fertility traits of Polish Holstein-Friesian primiparous and multiparous cows, as a step toward the incorporation of new traits into routine genetic evaluation. Lactation records of 116,836 Polish Holstein-Friesian cows were studied. The records cover the first three lactations of all cows.

Genome-Wide Genomic and Functional Association Study for Workability and Calving Traits in Holstein Cattle.

The goal of our study was to identify the SNPs, metabolic pathways (KEGG), and gene ontology (GO) terms significantly associated with calving and workability traits in dairy cattle. We analysed direct (DCE) and maternal (MCE) calving ease, direct (DSB) and maternal (MSB) stillbirth, milking speed (MSP), and temperament (TEM) based on a Holstein-Friesian dairy cattle population consisting of 35,203 individuals. The number of animals, depending on the trait, ranged from 22,301 bulls for TEM to 30,603 for DCE.

Effect of Calving Difficulties and Calf Mortality on Functional Longevity in Polish Holstein-Friesian Cows.

Fitting and validating the genomic evaluation model to Polish Holstein-Friesian cattle.

The aim of the study was to fit the genomic evaluation model to Polish Holstein-Friesian dairy cattle. A training data set for the estimation of additive effects of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) consisted of 1227 Polish Holstein-Friesian bulls. Genotypes were obtained by the use of Illumina BovineSNP50 Genotyping BeadChip.

Evaluating markers in selected genes for association with functional longevity of dairy cattle.

Background: Longevity expressed as the number of days between birth and death is a trait of great importance for both human and animal populations. In our analysis we use dairy cattle to demonstrate how the association of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) located within selected genes with longevity can be modeled. Such an approach can be extended to any genotyped population with time to endpoint information available.

Inclusive K(S);(0)K(S);(0) resonance production in ep collisions at HERA.

Inclusive K_{S};{0}K_{S};{0} production in ep collisions at the DESY ep collider HERA was studied with the ZEUS detector using an integrated luminosity of 0.5 fb;{-1}. Enhancements in the mass spectrum were observed and are attributed to the production of f_{2}(1270)/a_{2};{0}(1320), f_{2};{'}(1525) and f_{0}(1710).

Broadband observations of the naked-eye gamma-ray burst GRB 080319B.

Long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) release copious amounts of energy across the entire electromagnetic spectrum, and so provide a window into the process of black hole formation from the collapse of massive stars. Previous early optical observations of even the most exceptional GRBs (990123 and 030329) lacked both the temporal resolution to probe the optical flash in detail and the accuracy needed to trace the transition from the prompt emission within the outflow to external shocks caused by interaction with the progenitor environment. Here we report observations of the extraordinarily bright prompt optical and gamma-ray emission of GRB 080319B that provide diagnostics within seconds of its formation, followed by broadband observations of the afterglow decay that continued for weeks.

Practical application of daughter yield deviations in dairy cattle breeding.

Daughter yield deviations (DYDs) of bulls and yield deviations (YDs) of cows, besides estimated breeding values (EBVs), are standard measures of animals' genetic merits in routine genetic evaluations worldwide. In this contribution, we first point out differences and similarities between DYDs and EBVs calculated for milk, fat and protein yields. While the latter measure represents the additive polygenic value of an animal, the former consists of both the additive polygenic and residual components.

Effects of comicronised fenofibrate on lipid and insulin sensitivity in patients with polymetabolic syndrome X.

Background: This study investigated the effects of comicronised fenofibrate in patients with dyslipidemia and polymetabolic syndrome X.

Design: After a 6-week dietary run-in phase, 37 male patients eligible on lipid criteria entered a 12-week treatment phase consisting of diet plus one capsule daily containing 200 mg of comicronised fenofibrate (Lipanthyl(R)).

Results: A significant reduction in plasma concentrations of total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglyceride was observed after 4, 8 and 12 weeks of treatment with fenofibrate.

[Usefulness of electrocardiographic exercise tests for evaluation of percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty results].

The value of exercise ECG (ExT) in predicting the occurrence of restenosis after successful single-vessel percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) was assessed in 94 patients (pts). There were 83 pts with complete and 11 with incomplete revascularisation. In all cases ExT were made prior to the procedure, immediately after, 3 and 6 months after PTCA.

Prevalence of goiter, iodine deficiency and iodine prophylaxis in Poland. The results of a nationwide study.

A nation-wide epidemiological survey was conducted on a random sample of 19,300 schoolchildren, 0.5% of the 6-13-years-old child population. The study included data on body mass, height, thyroid size according to the ICCIDD/WHO classification, and information on iodized salt intake.

Ultrasound measurement of thyroid volume in the nation-wide epidemiological survey on iodine deficiency in Poland.

Thyroid size was evaluated by ultrasonography and palpation during a study performed in 1992 and 1993 by PCCIDD. Statistical analysis was carried out in 15774 cases with thyroid volume measured by trained teams of doctors. The results were evaluated in 5 age group: 6-8, 9-10, 11-12, and 13 years.

Comparison of ten Friesian strains in Poland for yield traits from first three parities.

Milk yield, fat yield, and fat percentage for the first three parities were compared for crosses of Friesian strains from Canada, Denmark, Israel, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Sweden, the United Kingdom, the US, and West Germany with Polish black-and-white cattle. Mixed model multitrait BLUP solutions for milk yield ranked Holstein strains (US, Canada, and Israel) and New Zealand Friesians higher than European Friesian strains for all three parities. Largest difference for milk yield between highest ranking US strain and lowest ranking Polish strain was 1002 kg for first lactation.
