Antifungal resistance is increasing by the emergence of intrinsically resistant species and by the development of secondary resistance in susceptible species. A previous study performed in Spain revealed levels of azole resistance in molds of between 10 and 12.7%, but secondary resistance in was not detected.

Objectives: Chlamydia trachomatis ompA genotypes A and B, primarily associated with trachoma, were unexpectedly detected in urogenital samples of patients in Spain, a trachoma-free country. In this study, we aimed to explain this finding using analysis of organotropism-related genes and a multilocus sequence typing (MLST) technique.

Methods: C.

Introduction: Despite vaccination, reports of cases and outbreaks of pertussis (whooping cough) continue to appear sporadically, sometimes in young children who are at higher risk of severe disease. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the impact of this infection in infants in a region with high vaccination coverage in the pediatric population.

Patients And Methods: We performed a retrospective observational chart-review study of pertussis cases occurring over a decade (1999-2008), microbiologically confirmed through a polymerase chain reaction technique that amplifies the IS481 Bordetella pertussis sequence.

Background And Objective: To evaluate the performance and the usefulness of an in vitro interferon gamma release assay in the diagnosis of latent tuberculosis infection in immunocompromised hospital-based population.

Patients And Method: A cohort of 445 high-risk adults from a hospital located in an intermediate tuberculosis burden area were prospectively evaluated for latent tuberculosis by means of the whole blood in vitro QuantiFERON-TB Gold assay (QTF), measuring tuberculosis-specific interferon gamma release by memory-effector T lymphocytes.

Results: Overall the test displayed a positive result in 15.

Epidemiological and research data have shown the significant role of maternal thyroid hormone in fetal neurologic development. It has been suggested that maternal hypothyroxinemia is potentially damaging for the neurodevelopment of the fetus, independently of T3 levels. We present a pregnant woman with resistance to thyroid hormone and iatrogenic hypothyroidism who was treated with triiodothyronine during the whole pregnancy.

Screening for congenital hypothyroidism for all newborns of the former western parts of the city of Berlin was instituted in 1978 by determination of the TSH levels in dried filter paper blood spots of the 3rd to 5th day of life. Since 1991 the newborns of the former eastern parts have been also included in the same screening program. From 1978 to 1995 a total number of 104 newborns with permanent congenital hypothyroidism have been detected resulting in a prevalence of congenital hypothyroidism of 1:3800.
