A marked increase in thyroid cancer among young children who were in the vicinity of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant at the time of the 1986 accident strongly suggests a possible causal relationship to the large amounts of radioactive iodine isotopes in the resulting fallout. Although remaining indoors, restricting consumption of locally produced milk and foodstuffs, and evacuation are important strategies in a major breach-of-containment accident, stable potassium iodide (KI) prophylaxis given shortly before or immediately after exposure can reduce greatly the thyroidal accumulation of radioiodines and the resulting radiation dose. Concerns about possible side effects of large-scale, medically unsupervised KI consumption largely have been allayed in light of the favorable experience in Poland following the Chernobyl accident; 16 million persons received single administrations of KI with only rare occurrence of side effects and with a probable 40% reduction in projected thyroid radiation dose.

We have previously shown that after administration of (123)I-SP-4 (a synthetic ApoB peptide fragment) to Watanabe heritable hyperlipidemic (WHHL) rabbits that foci of tracer uptake can be identified by external gamma camera imaging which correspond to regions of the aortas found to contain abundant atherosclerotic lesions at postmortem evaluation. Because (99m)Tc is preferred over (123)I for scintigraphic imaging, we prepared a (99m)Tc-labeled form of the SP-4 peptide, designated (99m)Tc-P199. To assess the feasibility of detecting atherosclerotic lesions using (99m)Tc-P199 and to compare the relative uptake of the (99m)Tc-labeled and radioiodinated peptides by such lesions, an admixture of (99m)Tc-199 and (125)I-SP-4 was administered to 11 WHHL and 2 normal rabbits.

The oligopeptide fragment of apolipoprotein B, SP-4, has demonstrated pronounced uptake in the healing edges of balloon-injured rabbit aortic endothelium. To assess 123I-labeled SP-4 for identification of atherosclerotic plaques by gamma camera imaging, 14 Watanabe heritable hyperlipidemic (WHHL) and 5 normal rabbits were imaged 5 minutes and 12 and 24 hours after intravenous injection of 123I-SP-4. Current concepts of brain herniation have depended largely on correlating clinical signs and symptoms with indirect radiographic studies and the results of postmortem neuropathology. This article describes measurements on midsagittal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans that distinctly define normal and abnormal rostral-caudal relationships between the diencephalic-mesencephalic junction and the plane of the tentorial incisura, herein termed the incisural line. We similarly provide quantitative MRI scan measurements relating the cerebellum and the plane of the foramen magnum, termed the foramen magnum line.

A calculational approach is described that provides the spatially varying radiation absorbed dose, presented as isodose contours superimposed on CT images, from nonuniform and/or irregular cumulated activity distributions. CT images are read from magnetic tape and are displayed on a high-resolution color graphics display monitor. Source tissue geometries are defined on a series of contiguous CT images automatically (by an edge detection algorithm) or manually (using a trackball), thereby obtaining a three-dimensional representation of the various source volumes of activity.

To find an explanation for this appearance, the authors obtained a right-sided bronchogram on a baboon, after which they induced pneumothorax on the same side. Accurate and precise radiation dosimetry is critical for the successful therapeutic application of systemically administered radionuclides, including, of course, radionuclides in the form of radiolabeled antibody. This requires determination, based on discrete serial measurements, of the time-dependent concentrations and/or total amounts of radioactivity in situ in order to calculate source region cumulated activities. Based on extensive studies (with clinically realistic numbers of counts and accuracies of the order of 10%) in simple geometric phantoms, in complex anthropomorphic phantoms, in animal models, and in humans, quantitative rotating scintillation camera-based single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) now appears to be a practical approach to such measurements.

Mouse monoclonal antibody TA99 detects a 70-kDa pigmentation-associated glycoprotein in human melanoma cell lines. The antigen cannot be detected on the cell surface by sensitive rosetting techniques or absorption studies, nor can it be detected as a secreted product in culture fluids. Contrary to expectation, 125I-labeled TA99 specifically localized to pigmented human melanoma transplants in nu/nu mice; no localization to nonpigmented melanoma or control tumors was found.

This paper describes the synthesis of alpha-aminoisobutyric acid-11C (11C-AIB) and studies its body distribution in healthy and tumor-bearing animals. High tissue levels of 11C-AIB were found in organs with high metabolic activity (pancreas, liver, kidney). The prostate tumor 11C-AIB concentrations are significantly lower than that of pancreas, liver, and kidney, but increased when compared with normal prostate levels.
