Article Synopsis
  • Polycystic kidney diseases (PKD) are significant contributors to chronic kidney disease, with autosomal dominant PKD (ADPKD) being the most prevalent form, while a new atypical form caused by DNAJB11 mutations has been identified.
  • A study compared 27 patients with DNAJB11-PKD to 42 typical ADPKD patients, revealing that DNAJB11-PKD patients had smaller kidneys and cysts, and progressed more slowly to end-stage kidney disease.
  • The findings indicated that DNAJB11-PKD presents unique clinical features, such as older age and higher rates of type 2 diabetes and kidney stones, suggesting that it should be classified separately from

Sensitivity to endocrine therapy of patients with estrogen receptor (ER)-positive metastatic breast cancer and germline mutations is not yet fully elucidated. Furthermore, the registration trials of CDK 4/6 inhibitors in combination with endocrine therapy lacked of a pre-specified subgroup analysis in mutation carriers. We report clinical history of two patients with BRCA-mutated, ER-positive metastatic breast cancer treated with letrozole plus the CDK 4/6 inhibitor palbociclib.

Background And Aim Of The Work: BRCA1/2 mutation carriers diagnosed with breast cancer have a strong life-time risk of developing contralateral breast cancer (CBC). We performed a population-based study with the aim of estimating the proportion of CBC associated with BRCA1/BRCA2 mutations, and the contribution of germline mutations to both molecular and clinical features of these tumors.

Methods: Fifty-five women with invasive CBC consecutively seen at the at the Genetic Oncology Service of the University Hospital of Parma from 2000 to 2011 were subjected to BRCA1/2 testing.

The immune cell function assay (ICFA) and de novo anti-donor-specific HLA antibodies (DSA) have been proposed as assays for immune monitoring in renal transplantation, but longitudinal studies examining the modification of both parameters over time and their relation with clinical events are lacking. We prospectively measured longitudinal changes in ICFA and DSA levels in 55 kidney transplant recipients over 3-year follow-up (534 visits) and analyzed their relation with the risk of developing acute rejections or infections. Seven patients (12.

Purpose: We evaluated the impact of the killer immunoglobulin-like receptors (KIR) of natural killer (NK) cells and of their HLA ligands over the clinical outcome of hepatitis C virus (HCV)-related hepatocellular carcinoma after curative treatment by either surgical resection or radiofrequency thermal ablation (RTA).

Experimental Design: Sixty-one consecutive patients with HCV-related hepatocellular carcinoma underwent KIR genotyping and HLA typing. A phenotypic/functional characterization of NK cells was carried out in patients with different KIR/KIR-ligand genotype.

Immunological evaluation by panel-reactive antibody (PRA) and determination of anti-HLA specificity are important phases in the evaluation of patients awaiting kidney transplantation. The main causes of immunization are previous solid organ transplantation, hemotransfusion, and pregnancy. It is also possible that immunogenicity can be triggered by vascularized tissue grafts.

Colorectal cancer screening is underutilized, resulting in preventable morbidity and mortality. In the present study, age-related and other disparities associated with physicians' delivery of colorectal cancer screening recommendations were examined. The present cross-sectional study included 43 physicians and 618 of their patients, aged 50 to 80 years, without past or present colorectal cancer.

Early age at onset is generally considered an indicator of genetic susceptibility to breast cancer. To address both the proportion of early-onset breast cancer associated with BRCA-1 or BRCA-2 germline mutation and the contribution of germline mutations to the clinical features and outcome of these tumors, we analyzed molecular status and clinical variables of a population-based sample of 66 Italian women diagnosed with breast cancer before the age of 40 who were unselected for family history. BRCA mutations were screened by automated sequencing of the entire BRCA-1 and BRCA-2 coding regions and splice junctions.

Background: Physician nonadherence to colorectal cancer (CRC) screening recommendations contributes to underuse of screening.

Objective: To assess physicians' knowledge of CRC screening guidelines for average-risk individuals, perceived barriers to screening and practice behaviours.

Methods: Between October 2004 and March 2005, staff physicians working in three university-affiliated hospitals in Montreal, Quebec, were surveyed.

A pretransplant positive cross-match is a contraindication for kidney transplantation, unlike in liver transplantation (OLT). In combined liver kidney transplantation (LKT) it is hypothesized that liver can protect kidney from rejection. We report the case of a 35-year-old woman on renal replacement therapy with gastrointestinal tract compression due to a hematoma following spontaneous liver rupture (May 2004).

Background: In the last few years advances in surgical techniques and immunosuppression have improved not only survival, but also quality of life in organ transplanted patients. Hence, the number of women of child-bearing age who decide to have a child--which means resuming a normal life--has increased. This multicenter retrospective study describes pregnancies after kidney transplantation and is the first such survey in Italy.

Article Synopsis
  • The study compared the functionality of CD4+ T cells specific to hepatitis C virus (HCV) from both blood and liver of 29 chronic HCV patients.
  • Different HCV proteins were tested for their ability to stimulate T-cell responses, with the core protein being the most recognized by intrahepatic T cells.
  • Although the immune response was focused on a few key protein sections, no escape mutations were detected over time, indicating a strong and stable immune response in the liver.
