Gene expression can accelerate ecological divergence by rapidly tweaking the response of an organism to novel environments, with more divergent environments exerting stronger selection and supposedly, requiring faster adaptive responses. Organisms adapted to extreme environments provide ideal systems to test this hypothesis, particularly when compared to related species with milder ecological niches. The Emperor penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri) is the only endothermic vertebrate breeding in the harsh Antarctic winter, in stark contrast with the less cold-adapted sister species, the King penguin (A.

Current methods are based on different categories of markers among which the classical microsatellites or the more recent genome wide approaches for the analyses of thousands of SNPs or hundreds of microhaplotypes through high throughput sequencing. Our approach utilizes intron-targeted amplicon sequencing to characterise multi-locus intron polymorphisms (MIPs) and assess genetic diversity.

Massive and plating corals have a high capacity to trap sediments, and active removal mechanisms can be energetically costly. Branching corals trap less sediment but are more susceptible to light limitation caused by suspended sediment.

While children younger than three years of age are especially vulnerable, few screening instruments are available for the detection of risk in this age group. The purpose of this research was to develop a screening tool for childcare professionals working in public and private daycare settings to support them in the early identification and referral of infants and toddlers exposed to emotional and physical abuse and neglect by primary caregivers, to be used in different settings across four European countries: Belgium, Italy, Latvia, and Hungary.

Pneumococcal protein vaccines have been proposed as serotype-independent alternatives to currently used conjugated polysaccharide vaccines, which have presented limitations regarding their coverage. Previously in our group, pneumococcal surface protein A (PspA) and detoxified pneumolysin (PdT) were genetically fused and the hybrid protein protected mice against pneumococcal challenge, offered higher cross-protection against different strains and showed greater opsonophagocytosis rate than co-administered proteins.

Breeding in Antarctica, the Emperor penguin appears as an extreme outcome of this process, with unique features related to insulation, heat production and energy management. However, whether this species actually diverged from a less cold-adapted ancestor, more ecologically similar to its sister species, the King penguin, is still an open question.

Glucocorticoids have pleiotropic effects on behavior and physiology, and might influence telomere length dynamics. During a stress event, GCs mobilize energy towards survival mechanisms rather than to telomere maintenance.

Territorials and sneakers adopt diverse pre- and post-mating strategies, adjusting their ejaculate investment and/or behavioural responses to the presence of competitors. The relative distance of competitors from the spawning female plays a major role in influencing male mating strategies and the resulting paternity share.

The results indicated a lower maximum and average size, a lower size at maturity and a higher fecundity in M. punctulatus compared with those in M.

Here, we analyzed the patterns of genetic variability in the marine snail from five coastal locations in the central-south Adriatic Sea (central Mediterranean) and one in the adjacent northern Ionian Sea, using 21 described polymorphic microsatellite loci. Observed and expected heterozygosity varied from 0.

Previous studies have provided mixed evidence of population structure over regional and circumpolar scales. The aim of the present study was to test the recent population hypothesis for Antarctic silverfish, which emphasizes the interplay between life history and hydrography in shaping connectivity.

Tropical coral reefs are outstanding for their beauty, diversity and complexity, but analogous types of bioconstructions are also present in temperate seas. The main bioconstructions in the Mediterranean Sea are represented by coralligenous formations, vermetid reefs, deep-sea cold-water corals, Lithophyllum byssoides trottoirs, coral banks formed by the shallow-water corals Cladocora caespitosa or Astroides calycularis, and sabellariid or serpulid worm reefs.

Although atopic dermatitis (AD) has the highest effect on burden of skin disease, no high-level studies have defined optimal therapy for severe disease. Corticosteroids have been used to treat AD since the 1950s and remain the only systemic medication with Food and Drug Administration approval for this indication in children, despite published guidelines of care that recommend against this option.

Crisaborole ointment is a non-steroidal phosphodiesterase 4 inhibitor for the treatment of mild-to-moderate atopic dermatitis. This post hoc analysis explores crisaborole ointment for early relief of pruritus in patients with mild to moderate atopic dermatitis from 2 phase III studies.

The phase 3 clinical trial designs for these treatments and their notable differences make it difficult for clinicians to interpret the data into clinical practice. For example, the primary end point predominantly used to assess efficacy in all the trials is complete cure, defined as no involvement of the nail plus mycologic cure; also, a notable number of patients fail to achieve a complete cure despite clear improvement in the nail.

Traditionally, certain clinical features of onychomycosis, including the presence of substantial lateral disease, focal fungal masses, yellow/brown streaks, and extensive nail involvement (ie, >50%), indicate a poor treatment prognosis and have proven difficult-to-treat with oral or traditional topical therapies. Owing to the novel features of topical tavaborole, we sought to understand the potential utility of tavaborole in difficult-to-treat onychomycosis.

Objective: To assess the long-term safety results from a multicenter, open-label, 48-week safety study (AD-303) of patients (N = 517) ≥2 years of age with mild to moderate AD who continued crisaborole treatment, a topical phosphodiesterase-4 inhibitor, after completing a 28-day phase 3 pivotal study (AD-301, AD-302).
Methods: Global disease severity was assessed in patients every 4 weeks, and if assessed as mild or greater, a 28-day treatment period with crisaborole applied twice daily was initiated.
We describe gh-throughput stone ping (HiHiMap), a high-throughput imaging method to measure histones and histone posttranslational modifications (PTMs) in single cells. HiHiMap uses imaging-based quantification of DNA and cyclin A to stage individual cells in the cell cycle to determine the levels of histones or histone PTMs in each stage of the cell cycle. As proof of principle, we apply HiHiMap to measure the level of 21 core histones, histone variants, and PTMs in primary, immortalized, and transformed cells.

Methods: We conducted a pooled analysis of 8-week, post-study follow-up (PSFU) data from two phase 3, randomized controlled trials in a subset of patients who experienced complete or almost clear nail (CN) at the end of treatment (week 52); 48 weeks of treatment with once-daily tavaborole compared with placebo in adults with distal subungual onychomycosis was evaluated at week 60.
Background: The complex interplay between ethnicity, Fitzpatrick skin type (FST), and hirsutism in patients with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is poorly understood.
Objective: In this cross-sectional, retrospective analysis, we examined the prevalence, severity, and distribution of hirsutism with clinician-rated site-specific and total modified Ferriman-Gallwey (mFG) visual scoring in a diverse cohort of American patients with PCOS.
Methods: Independent analyses were conducted on the basis of patient-reported FST ratings and ethnicity.
