Aims/hypothesis: Diabetic retinopathy is characterised by neuroinflammation that drives neuronal and vascular degenerative pathology, which in many individuals can lead to retinal ischaemia and neovascularisation. Infiltrating macrophages and activated retina-resident microglia have been implicated in the progression of diabetic retinopathy, although the distinct roles of these immune cells remain ill-defined. Our aim was to clarify the distinct roles of macrophages/microglia in the pathogenesis of proliferative ischaemic retinopathies.

The lived experiences of operating room nurses from the surgery on COVID-19 patients: a phenomenological study.

Background: During the COVID-19 pandemic, some patients who were transported to the operating room for emergency surgery had COVID-19; operating room nurses should be in direct contact with these patients in a small and closed space of the operating room. This can lead to unpleasant experiences for these people. Accordingly, this study was conducted to understand the experience of operating room nurses during the surgery of COVID-19 patients.

Coping Orientation of Academic Community in the Time of COVID-19 Pandemic: A Pilot Multi-Country Survey Study.

In this paper, we have mapped the coping methods used to address the coronavirus pandemic by members of the academic community. We conducted an anonymous survey of a convenient sample of 674 faculty/staff members and students from September to December 2020. A modified version of the RCOPE scale was used for data collection.

Exploring Gaze Dynamics in Virtual Reality through Multiscale Entropy Analysis.

This study employs Multiscale Entropy (MSE) to analyze 5020 binocular eye movement recordings from 407 college-aged participants, as part of the GazeBaseVR dataset, across various virtual reality (VR) tasks to understand the complexity of user interactions. By evaluating the vertical and horizontal components of eye movements across tasks such as vergence, smooth pursuit, video viewing, reading, and random saccade, collected at 250 Hz using an ET-enabled VR headset, this research provides insights into the predictability and complexity of gaze patterns. Participants were recorded up to six times over a 26-month period, offering a longitudinal perspective on eye movement behavior in VR.

Modulation of Extracellular Matrix Composition and Chronic Inflammation with Pirfenidone Promotes Scar Reduction in Retinal Wound Repair.

Wound repair in the retina is a complex mechanism, and a deeper understanding of it is necessary for the development of effective treatments to slow down or even prevent degenerative processes leading to photoreceptor loss. In this study, we harnessed a laser-induced retinal degeneration model (532-nm laser photocoagulation with 300 μm spot size, 60 ms duration and 60 mV pulse), enabling a profound molecular elucidation and a comprehensive, prolonged observation of the wound healing sequence in a murine laser-induced degeneration model (C57BL/6J mice, 6-12 weeks) until day 49 post-laser. Our observations included the expression of specific extracellular matrix proteins and myofibroblast activity, along with an analysis of gene expression related to extracellular matrix and adhesion molecules through RNA measurements.

The prophylactic effect of photobiomodulation therapy on pain perception due to infiltration injection: a randomized clinical trial.

Objectives: Fear of pain in dentistry especially the injection involved in most of the processes has always been an important issue preventing the patients from consulting a dentist at the right time. This study aims to evaluate the effect of photobiomodulation therapy on reduction of pain in infiltration injection.

Materials And Methods: This trial is a crossover study including 30 patients.

Machine learning-based modeling of malachite green adsorption on hydrochar derived from hydrothermal fulvification of wheat straw.

This study investigated the efficiency of hydrochar derived from hydrothermal fulvification of wheat straw in adsorbing malachite green (MG) dye. The characterizations of the hydrochar samples were determined using various analytical techniques like SEM, EDX, FTIR, X-ray spectroscopy, BET surface area analysis, ICP-OES for the determination of inorganic elements, elemental analysis through ultimate analysis, and HPLC for the content of sugars, organic acids, and aromatics. Adsorption experiments demonstrated that hydrochar exhibited superior removal efficiency compared to feedstock.

Proliferative vitreoretinopathy: an update on the current and emerging treatment options.

Proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) remains the main cause of failure in retinal detachment (RD) surgery and a demanding challenge for vitreoretinal surgeons. Herpetic anterior uveitis following COVID-19 vaccines: a case series.

Purpose: To report a case series of herpetic uveitis following COVID-19 vaccinations.

Methods: Demographic, clinical and treatment-related data of herpetic anterior uveitis cases was collected at five tertiary eye hospitals between January 2021 and June 2022. A retrospective database review at one of the centers comparing the number of cases of herpetic eye disease before and after the introduction of COVID-19 vaccination was performed as well.

Characterization of Macroglia Response during Tissue Repair in a Laser-Induced Model of Retinal Degeneration.

Reactive gliosis is a hallmark of chronic degenerative diseases of the retina. As gliosis involves macroglia, we investigated their gliotic response to determine the role of S100β and intermediate filaments (IFs) GFAP, vimentin, and nestin during tissue repair in a laser-induced model of retinal degeneration. We validated the results with human retinal donor samples.

Job Satisfaction and Overcoming the Challenges of Teleworking in Times of COVID-19: A Pilot Study Among Iranian University Community.

The coronavirus pandemic changed the academic world in many ways, and most academic institutions continue operating through teleworking. The aim of the present study was to determine how satisfied the university community (faculty/staff members and students) in Iran has been with remote work, and the ways in which they have dealt with the lockdown and working from home during the coronavirus pandemic. A survey was conducted among 196 academics from different universities in Iran.

Living through a Global Pandemic: A Cross-Sectional Study on the Psychological Resilience of the University Population in Iran.

Aims: This study aimed to describe and understand the individual and social dimensions of resiliency among Iranian academics as professionals during the early wave of the ongoing pandemic. Furthermore, we aimed to emphasize the cultural context in our analysis.

We have identified a set of RNA-binding proteins (RBP) selectively enriched in human AML LSCs. Using an in vivo two-step CRISPR-Cas9 screen to assay stem cell functionality, we found 32 RBPs essential for LSCs in MLL-AF9;NrasG12D AML.

Aqueous Humor Apolipoprotein Concentration and Severity of Diabetic Retinopathy in Type 2 Diabetes.

An imbalance of plasma apolipoproteins has been linked to diabetic retinopathy (DR); however, there is scarce information regarding their presence in the aqueous humor (AH) and their role in DR. Here, we aimed at analysing the relationship between apolipoprotein concentrations in human AH and the severity of DR. Concentrations of apolipoproteins were measured retrospectively in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) without DR ( = 23), with mild to moderate nonproliferative DR (NPDR) ( = 13), and advanced NPDR/proliferative DR (PDR) ( = 14) using a multiplex immunoassay.
