Adjuvant chemotherapy is a well-established treatment for large-breed dogs with appendicular osteosarcoma; however, it is unclear if it improves outcomes in small-breed dogs due to limited focused studies. This retrospective study aimed to investigate the oncologic outcomes of dogs weighting less than 15 kg with appendicular osteosarcoma that underwent curative resection with or without postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy. Endpoints were time to distant progression (TTDP) and overall survival (OS).

The Role of Incentive Spirometry in Enhanced Recovery After Lung Cancer Resection: A Propensity Score-Matched Study.

Postoperative physiotherapy is a cornerstone of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) programs, especially following lung resection. Despite its importance, the literature lacks clear recommendations and guidelines, particularly regarding the role of incentive spirometry (IS). This study aims to determine whether incentive spirometry offers additional benefits over early ambulation alone in patients undergoing lung resection for primary lung cancer.

Reassigned surgical margins after neoadjuvant chemotherapy results in low local recurrence in dogs with mast cell tumours.

Background: Neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) is delivered before surgery to allow less extensive tumour resection, but the optimal surgical margin width after NAC is unknown. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of reassigned margins on local recurrence after NAC in dogs with mast cell tumours (MCTs).

Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted for dogs with MCTs undergoing NAC consisting of vinblastine and prednisolone, subsequent tumour resection and lymphadenectomy, and a minimum follow-up of 6 months.

Late-onset and long-lasting neutropenias in the young: A new entity anticipating immune-dysregulation disorders.

This study identifies a new chronic form of immune neutropenia in the young with or without detectable indirect anti-neutrophil antibodies, characterized by mild/moderate neutropenia low risk of severe infection (14%), tendency to develop autoimmune phenomena over the course of the disease (cumulative incidence of 58.6% after 20 years of disease duration), leukopenia, progressive reduction of absolute lymphocyte count and a T- and B-cell profile similar to autoimmune disorders like Sjogren syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, and systemic lupus erythematosus (increased HLADR+ and CD3 + TCRγδ cells, reduced T regulatory cells, increased double-negative B and a tendency to reduced B memory cells). In a minority of patients, P/LP variants related to primary immuno-regulatory disorders were found.

Background: Hand-sewn intestinal resection and anastomosis are commonly performed in veterinary medicine. The outcome of the hand-sewn side-to-side anastomosis (SSA) technique has never been described and compared to other techniques in dogs and cats.

Aim: The study aims to describe the side-to-side hand-sewn anastomosis technique in small animals and to compare it with the end-to-end technique.

Autoimmune Lymphoproliferative Syndrome (ALPS) Disease and ALPS Phenotype: Are They Two Distinct Entities?

Autoimmune lymphoproliferative syndrome (ALPS) is an inherited disorder of lymphocyte homeostasis classically due to mutation of FAS, FASL, and CASP10 genes (ALPS-FAS/CASP10). Despite recent progress, about one-third of ALPS patients does not carry classical mutations and still remains gene orphan (ALPS-U, undetermined genetic defects). The aims of the present study were to compare the clinical and immunological features of ALPS-FAS/CASP10 versus those of ALPS-U affected subjects and to deepen the genetic characteristics of this latter group.

Congenital Lobar Emphysema in a Kitten with Concomitant Hiatal Hernia and Nutritional Secondary Hyperparathyroidism.

A 2 mo old domestic shorthair kitten was presented for acute respiratory distress and severe ambulatory difficulties. Thoracic radiography revealed hyperinflation of the left cranial lung lobe and a mass with soft-tissue/gas opacity in the caudal mediastinum, leading to the suspicion of congenital lung lobe emphysema and hiatal hernia. Decreased bone radiopacity and suspected pathological fractures were also present.

Longitudinal lymph node step-sectioning for the identification of metastatic disease in canine mast cell tumor.

Lymph node (LN) metastasis in canine mast cell tumor (MCT) can affect prognosis and postsurgical treatment recommendations; however, routine histological single-section examination may underestimate the incidence of metastases. This prospective study aimed at determining whether longitudinal step-sectioning of the entire LN allows for a more reliable detection of metastases. Dogs with MCT undergoing resection of the primary tumor and regional lymphadenectomy were enrolled.

The industrialization of perovskite solar cells relies on solving intrinsic-to-material issues. To reach record efficiencies perovskite deposition needs to be finely adjusted by multi-step processes, in a humidity free glove-box environment and by means of hardly scalable techniques often associated with toxic solvents and anti-solvent dripping/bath. Herein, the use of polymeric material is proposed to deposit perovskite layers with easy processability.

Late-onset and long-lasting autoimmune neutropenia: an analysis from the Italian Neutropenia Registry.

Primary autoimmune neutropenia (pAN) is typified by onset in early infancy and a mild/moderate phenotype that resolves within 3 years of diagnosis. In contrast, secondary AN is classically an adult disease associated with malignancy, autoimmunity, immunodeficiency, viral infection, or drugs. This study describes a cohort of 79 children from the Italian Registry who, although resembling pAN, did not fully match the criteria for pAN because neutropenia either appeared after age 5 years (LO-Np) or lasted longer than 3 years (LL-Np).

Management of Prostate Cancer with Systemic Therapy: A Prostate Cancer Unit Perspective.

The scenario of systemic therapy for prostate cancer is rapidly evolving, with new drugs and new treatment options. To update the background knowledge of shared uro-oncologic practice, we reviewed current statements and landmarks in systemic therapy. A number of new agents are under investigation in non-metastatic and metastatic disease.

Computed Tomography-Colonography With Intravenous Contrast Medium and Urographic Phase for the Evaluation of Pelvic Deep Infiltrating Endometriosis of Intestinal and Urinary Tract.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of a specific protocol of computed tomography-colonography with intravenous contrast medium and urographic phase, which combined simultaneously the study of the intestinal and urinary tract, in the preoperative evaluation of women with deep infiltrating endometriosis (DIE) of anterior and posterior pelvic compartments.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 73 women who underwent 74 computed tomography-colonography with intravenous contrast medium and urographic phase examinations for strong clinical suspicion of DIE. All the women had surgical confirmation.

Egg products freshness is a crucial problem for the production of safe and high quality food. Ion Mobility Spectrometry (IMS) coupled to Gas Chromatography (GC), provides a rapid, sensitive, cost-effective tool for the detection of freshness issues. A chemometric model was created recording the volatile fingerprints of the different egg products batches, analyzed as fresh, then left at room temperature and daily controlled: 97% was correctly predicted by the model.
