DeepFlu: a deep learning approach for forecasting symptomatic influenza A infection based on pre-exposure gene expression.

Background And Objective: Not everyone gets sick after an exposure to influenza A viruses (IAV). Although KLRD1 has been identified as a potential biomarker for influenza susceptibility, it remains unclear whether forecasting symptomatic flu infection based on pre-exposure host gene expression might be possible.

Method: To examine this hypothesis, we developed DeepFlu using the state-of-the-art deep learning approach on the human gene expression data infected with IAV subtype H1N1 or H3N2 viruses to forecast who would catch the flu prior to an exposure to IAV.

Molecular interpretation of fluorescence solvent relaxation of Patman and 2H NMR experiments in phosphatidylcholine bilayers.

The analysis of time-dependent fluorescence shifts of the bilayer probe 6-hexadecanoyl-2-(((2-(trimethylammonium)ethyl)methyl)amino)naphthalene chloride (Patman) offers valuable information on the hydration and dynamics of phospholipid headgroups. Quenching studies on vesicles composed of four phosphatidylcholines with different hydrocarbon chains (18:1c9/18:1c9, DOPC; 16:0/18:1c9, POPC; 18:1c9/16:0, OPPC; 18:1c6/18:1c6, PCDelta6) show that the chromophore of Patman is defined located at the level of the sn-1 ester-group in the phospholipid, which is invariant to the hydrocarbon chain. The so-called solvent relaxation (SR) approach as well as solid-state 2H NMR reveals that DOPC and PCDelta6 are more hydrated than POPC and OPPC.

[A case of priapism of the proximal corpora cavernosa].

A young man presented with a little perineal mass that was found to be secondary to partial priapism of the proximal corpora cavernosa. This is a very rare condition with only 3 previously recorded cases in the urology literature. The patient made a good recovery and was able to resume sexual activity.

[A case of retroperitoneal leiomyosarcoma].

The Authors present a case of retroperitoneal leiomyosarcoma, diagnosed because of the early symptomatic hydronephrosis due to the compression of the tumour on the lumbar ureter. Some general clinical aspects of retroperitoneal sarcomas are discussed too. In the case presented adjuvant therapy was not advised, because of the small volume of the tumour and the possibility of its complete excision.
