There is currently no established information for assessing the general welfare conditions and behavior of dairy cows housed in compost-bedded pack barns (CBPs) that allow access to pasture. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate and classify the welfare and behavior of dairy cows in three different housing conditions within CBPs in southern Brazil. During both the cold and hot seasons, nine farms were divided into three groups: CONV (conventional, large, full-time barns), ADAP (conventionally adapted, full-time barns), and PART (part-time barns).

Industrial egg residue (IER) possesses substantial concentrations of calcium and crude protein. The objective of this study was to measure the digestibility and performance of broilers when IER was added to the feed. Four treatments were tested, which caused increasing replacement of calcitic limestone by IER (0, 35, 70 and 100%) during a 42-day production cycle.

Beef cattle production has a large variety of systems with different performance and technology levels. This study compared young Angus steers carcass and meat quality traits of high growth potential early-finished animals fed exclusively on pasture with low growth potential late-finished animals. Besides the grazed forage, the low growth potential group received corn grain at 0.

Our objective was to determine whether inclusion of industrial egg residue (IER) in the diets of laying hens would replace calcitic limestone without interfering with productive efficiency, egg quality or digestibility. In a first study (Experiment I), we used 30% IER in the diets of laying hens and found that the apparent digestibility coefficients were 51.6%, 42.

Egg stocking is used to meet housing demands in the hatchery industry. Stocking periods longer than 10 days of occur commonly, despite the fact that this practice causes productive losses during the incubation process. To minimize these losses, eggs are heated before incubation to stimulate the embryo, thereby reducing the range of birth intervals.

Background: New regenerative treatments have emerged with the use of multipotent mesenchymal cells, with special interest in adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs). In recent years, studies that have sought to identify possible quantitative or qualitative differences in ADSCs derived from different donor subcutaneous adipose tissue have shown divergent results making the determination of a preferential donor area still considered inconclusive.

Materials And Methods: The number of ADSCs present in the adipose tissue collected by liposuction was quantified between five different body areas from 17 women, by means of the CFU-F assay and to investigate possible qualitative differences in the ADSCs from these different areas by analyzing: cell surface markers, cell kinetics, action of the supernatant produced by ADSCs from different body areas on fibroblast migration and, finally, differences in the secretome present in the supernatant produced by these cells.

Coccidiosis is caused by protozoa of the genus Eimeria. These are intracellular parasites of enterocytes that rupture the host cell, causing lesions in the intestinal mucosa. The lesions caused by Eimeria reduce nutrient absorption capacity, negatively affecting productive gains in broilers, and representing a gateway for other enteropathogens.

We evaluated the effects of oregano essential oil (OEO) added to the feed of semi-heavy laying hens during winter. We measured performance as well as physical and chemical quality of fresh and 21-day stored eggs. A total of 240 semi-heavy laying hens were distributed into six treatments and five replicates (n = 8 each).

The aim of this study was to investigate whether microalgae in Japanese quail feed alters performance, fatty acid profiles in the eggs and egg quality. One hundred quails were distributed in four groups and five replicates of five birds per experimental group. The treatments consisted of four levels of Spirulina platensis microalgae (0%, 5%, 10%, and 15%) in the diets.

Repeated measures from the same individual have been analyzed by using repeatability and finite dimension models under univariate or multivariate analyses. However, in the last decade, the use of random regression models for genetic studies with longitudinal data have become more common. Thus, the aim of this research was to estimate genetic parameters for body weight of four experimental chicken lines by using univariate random regression models.

Injury conditions affecting the upper extremity may lead to severe functional impairment and an accurate evaluation is needed in order to select the most effective treatment in a rehabilitation program. This study focused on simultaneous electromyographic and kinematic analysis to assess movement patterns of upper extremity during a basic daily activity, considering different demands existing within the task. Twenty-five healthy subjects, average age 19.

Background: Autologous fat grafting to the breast for cosmetic and reconstructive purposes is still controversial with respect to its safety and efficacy. The objective of this study was to conduct a systematic review of the clinical applicability and safety of the technique.

Methods: An online search of the Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, Embase and SciELO was conducted from July 1986 to June 2011.

In addition to the emotional suffering after the removal of an eye, various problems can occur so that reconstruction of an anophthalmic cavity becomes difficult. The objective of reconstruction is to increase the depth of the conjunctival fornix to secure and support a prosthesis. Nine patients operated on during 2008 and 2009 in the Craniofacial Division of the Hospital Beneficência Portuguesa in São Paulo were evaluated retrospectively with the operative technique described in this article.

Despite the benefits from the minimally invasive technique, complications may occur, raising doubts about the safety of polymethylmethacrylate as an injectable filler material. The authors report their treatment of a patient from another institution with necrosis involving full-thickness nasal skin and upper lip after injection of polymethylmethacrylate in the nasolabial folds and nose for augmentation. An expanded median forehead flap was used to reconstruct the nose, and an Abbé flap was used for the upper lip.
