The general objective was to determine the incidence of postpartum hemorrhage when oxytocin was administered at the end of the second stage of labor compared to when oxytocin was administered at the end of the third stage. The specific objectives were to determine the mean amount of blood loss, duration of the third stage of labor, need for additional uterotonics and blood transfusion, incidence of hypotension and retained placenta, and mean difference in hemoglobin levels. A randomized controlled trial was conducted in a tertiary care training hospital.

The plume, generated from a warm source develops upward carrying a suspension of particles from the bottom. It is found that the vertical structure of the plume depends on the stratification of the water column, which in turn depends on the seasonal meteorological conditions.

Fluorescent in situ hybridization demonstrated that the BCL1 oncogene is translocated (not rearranged) to chromosome band 13q14 and that a copy of D13S319 locus is deleted. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case with this novel cytogenetic aberration.

To our knowledge, this is the second reported case of CMMoL with monosomy 15. On the other hand, monosomy 15 in complex karyotypes is a frequent chromosome aberration in myelodysplastic syndromes, particularly in refractory anemia with excess of blasts.

Cytogenetic study of a bone marrow culture revealed the following karyotype: 47,XX,+21,+i(21)(q10)x2. Fluorescence in situ hybridization study with a locus specific probe for 21q22 verified a pentasomy of 21q as a sole clonal cytogenetic abnormality.

Chromosomal abnormalities in patients with large granular lymphocyte leukemia (LGLL) are rare. Herein we present a novel cytogenetic abnormality t(11;12)(q12;q11) in a patient with LGLL identified by cross-species color banding (RxFISH). The application of RxFISH allowed the rapid and easy identification of a chromosome rearrangement that was not recognized by conventional cytogenetics.

This report describes the clinical experiences of NP students from George Mason University (Fairfax, VA) during an intensive 2 weeks in Nicaragua in their final semester, accompanied by an NP faculty member. The program was planned and implemented in collaboration with the Universidad Politecnica de Nicaragua School of Nursing (Managua, Nicaragua).

The method is based on the oxidation of the drug by potassium permanganate in sulfuric acid medium at 80 degrees C. The calibration graph is linear over the range 0.

Sensitive high-performance liquid chromatographic assays have been developed for the quantification of stavudine (2',3'-didehydro-3'-deoxythymidine, d4T) in human plasma and urine. The methods are linear over the concentration ranges 0.025-25 and 2-150 microg/ml in plasma and urine, respectively.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted including 601 HIV-infected patients who attended 20 Spanish hospitals in June 1998. Drug resistant mutations were examined using hybridization line probe assays (LiPA).
After a large drug scanning, the system Luminol-H2O2-Fe(CN)6(3-) is proposed for first time for the indirect determination of paracetamol. The method is based on the oxidation of paracetamol by hexacyanoferrate (III) and the subsequent inhibitory effect on the reaction between luminol and hydrogen peroxide. The procedure resulted in a linear calibration graph over the range 2.

We have investigated the relationship between the appearance of resistant genotypes and the viral load of each patient after treatment. Our objective was to assess the association between human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) RNA plasma levels and the number of drug resistance-associated point mutations after treatment.

Setting: Cross-sectional study in out-patient clinics in three reference hospitals for HIV/AIDS located in Barcelona, Madrid and Seville, Spain.
Patients And Methods: Primary mutant genotypes were examined in plasma HIV RNA collected from 150 antiretroviral-naive subjects, half in 1993 and the other half in 1997.

Background: An approach of daily or 5 days per week treatment as maintenance therapy is mandatory among HIV patients with CMV retinitis. We evaluate the efficacy and tolerance of thrice weekly maintenance therapy for CMV retinitis in AIDS patients.
Methods: Sixty nine consecutive patients with CMV disease were eligible for a prospective open clinical trial.
Background: The degree of disability of workers ascribed to the private allowances system in Chile, is judged by Medical Commissions that apply norms that establish percentages of incapacity, without considering prognosis.
Aim: To communicate the causes of disability among Chilean workers ascribed to the private allowances system, their mortality and to correlate the causes of death with diagnoses.
Subjects And Methods: We analyzed 13,456 consecutive cases judged between August 1990 and April 1992.

Background: The characteristics of AIDS patients in Spain have already been described, as have the factors which may or may not be present at the time of AIDS diagnosis influence in the prognosis. The introduction of zidovudine and later other antiretroviral drugs have improved the prognosis versus historical controls. Nonetheless, advances in prevention, control and the treatment of opportunistic infections have provided the greatest influence in the development of clinical manifestations of AIDS: The aim of the present was to study the evolution of AIDS patients seen at the Hospital Clínic in Barcelona, Spain, from 1985 to 1992 and analyze the variations in the time of clinical manifestations and survival.
