Article Synopsis
  • Current SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccines are effective, but there's a need for new strategies due to waning immunity and variant emergence, prompting this study on a heterologous mRNA/MVA vaccination approach.
  • The research demonstrates that a combination of a trimeric receptor binding domain (RBD) delivered via mRNA and a modified vaccinia virus (MVA) boost creates strong immune responses, including effective antibodies and T cell activity against various SARS-CoV-2 strains.
  • The heterologous regimen provided complete protection in specific mouse models after exposure to the virus, outperforming traditional methods and suggesting that alternative nanocarrier technologies could enhance vaccine effectiveness while avoiding patent issues.

  • PD-(L)1 inhibitors are used to treat non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), but their effectiveness varies among patients.
  • This study analyzed PD-L1 expression in circulating leukocytes in 113 NSCLC patients to determine who might benefit from these inhibitors, focusing on their responses after 10-12 weeks of treatment.
  • Results showed that responders to treatment had higher pre-treatment levels of specific PD-L1 expressing cells, and post-treatment levels decreased, suggesting that measuring these markers before treatment could help identify suitable candidates for anti-PD-(L)1 therapy.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) have the potential to trigger unpredictable immune-related adverse events (irAEs), which can be severe. The underlying mechanisms of these events are not fully understood. As PD-L1 is upregulated by IFN, the heightened immune activation resulting from PD-1/PD-L1 inhibition may enhance the IFN response, triggering the expression of IFN-inducible genes and contributing to irAE development and its severity.

Global change drivers are imposing novel conditions on Earth's ecosystems at an unprecedented rate. Among them, biological invasions and climate change are of critical concern. It is generally thought that strictly asexual populations will be more susceptible to rapid environmental alterations due to their lack of genetic variability and, thus, of adaptive responses.

Primary angiitis of the central nervous system (PACNS) is a rare and potentially severe form of vasculitis that is limited to the brain, spinal cord, and meninges. Despite extensive research, the etiology and underlying immunologic mechanisms of PACNS remain largely unknown. PACNS presents with a variety of clinical, radiological, and pathologic features, but it is generally characterized by inflammation and destruction of the walls of blood vessels in the CNS, which can lead to tissue ischemia and/or hemorrhage.

Introduction: While there has been considerable progress in the development of vaccines against SARS-CoV-2, largely based on the S (spike) protein of the virus, less progress has been made with vaccines delivering different viral antigens with cross-reactive potential.

Methods: In an effort to develop an immunogen with the capacity to induce broad antigen presentation, we have designed a multi-patch synthetic candidate containing dominant and persistent B cell epitopes from conserved regions of SARS-CoV-2 structural proteins associated with long-term immunity, termed CoV2-BMEP. Here we describe the characterization, immunogenicity and efficacy of CoV2-BMEP using two delivery platforms: nucleic acid DNA and attenuated modified vaccinia virus Ankara (MVA).

There are various mass-like lesions that can mimic true neoplasms in the spine, including inflammatory, infectious, vascular, congenital, and degenerative etiologies. While some lesions have distinctive imaging features that suggest a correct diagnosis, others have overlapping characteristics that do not allow their differentiation based solely on their imaging findings. For entities with nonspecific imaging features, knowledge of the clinical and laboratory information is critical to provide an accurate diagnosis.
